Trial by Fire

Have you ever wondered why you are where you are, figuratively and literally? Why you were born into the family you have? Why you were born into this time and place in history? The answer to all of these questions is simple: we really do not know. Not now anyway.

How often have you said something along the lines of “if only I would have been born into a different family,” or “if only I was born in a different era?”

When we make statements like these or other similar ones, what we are saying is that God has no clue what He is doing. We are questioning Him, the God who created everything out of nothing, who carefully placed every star in the sky. His creation of all that is should tell us that God has a plan, and that plan includes you… and me, and everything in existence, for a specific purpose. His plan is perfect.

Don’t think, for one minute, that any problems you have are too much for God to handle. He is not too busy to concern Himself with the needs of your life. Quite the contrary. He waits for you to call upon Him in great and small things, in good times and in bad. God does meet you where you are… but He does not expect you to stay there.

“To begin is for everyone, to persevere is for saints.”
— St. Josemaria Escriva

And when He does call you, it is not because of the clothes you wear, your social media status, the car you drive, the job you have, or how pious you think your life is. God is calling you because He has a plan for you. And when you answer, “here I am, Lord,” you must know this to be true of Him— God DOES NOT live in the ‘comfort zone’. God thrives in the testing, in the crucible. Saints do not become saints by living in the lap of luxury.

And strap yourself in, because it is going to be a bumpy ride.

Your entire life will be turned upside down. He will toss you into the furnace of life where there will be hardships, testing your very soul that clings to fear, that tastes of desperation and the weight of sin that chains you down like an anchor.

His call is a call to freedom, freedom from the sin that has kept you prisoner. A call to a higher purpose, a call to Sainthood. He has never forced anyone to it; that is always up to you. All those uncertainties that make you toss and turn at night, the temptations that whisper to you in the darkness… that is the ‘stuff’ that, when you overcome all of them, God uses to mold you.

If you are pretending that you “have it all together,” stop! You DON’T have it all together! None of us do. Your faith isn’t something to put on a mantel; it is that ‘something’ that you hold onto like a lifeline when everything around you is crumbling. It should fit like a glove.

“Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of faith is to see what you believe.”
— St. Augustine

Rid yourself of the lies that weigh you down. Set yourself free from all those things that are not of God: the mess, the darkness of sin, the fight that is holding you back from allowing God to work in your life.

He is waiting for you. Let Him in. Let Him heal and transform that brokenness into a True, Living Faith that will allow you to weather any storm. A faith that will move mountains.

We may not truly understand or know what God is calling us to, but as St. Thomas Aquinas says, “God destines us for an end beyond the grasp of reason.”

Remember, you have one life. That is all. You were made for God. Do not waste it.

“To join two things together, there must be nothing between them or there cannot be perfect fusion. Now, realize that this is how God wants our soul to be, without any selfish love of ourselves or of others in between, just as God loves us without anything in between.”
— St. Catherine of Siena
