Incendiary: Biden and Democrats have repeatedly referred to Trump as a fascist, dictator, and ‘Hitler’

For years, the Left has referred to Donald Trump as a fascist and a dictator. President Joe Biden has referred to him as being like Hitler. Last week, Biden told supporters to stop talking about Biden’s disastrous debate with Trump, and put a bullseye on Trump.

“So, we’re done talking about the debate, it’s time to put Trump in a bullseye,” he told supporters last week, according to POLITICO.

When Gov. Sarah Palin once published in 2011 an image of a bullseye on the district of Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, the media and the Left blamed Palin for the attempted assassination of Giffords during a constituent meeting in Arizona.

But the media has fought the idea that the president and his followers who spout “fascist” and “Hitler” rhetoric are responsible for the gunman’s actions on July 13, when a bullet grazed the ear of the former president as he was speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania.

“You cannot repeatedly and endlessly label a major party candidate and former president Actual Hitler, a full-scale threat to democracy, without radically increasing the danger of violence in America. This danger has been obvious for years — and engaged in by nearly everyone on the Left, up to and including the current president. We are in a hideously ugly new era,” commented conservative Ben Shapiro.

Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, said what many Republicans have been thinking — that Biden’s campaign taking points have “led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination.”

Former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, a Democrat, commented, “The assassination attempt on President Trump is a logical consequence of repeatedly comparing him to Adolf Hitler. After all, if Trump truly was another Hitler, wouldn’t it be their moral duty to assassinate him?”

Meanwhile, in an early morning press conference, Federal Bureau of Investigation officials from the Pittsburgh field office referred most questions about security to the Secret Service, which was not at the press conference.

The FBI has been put in charge of the investigation, a condition that may give conservatives little confidence, as it’s the same agency that had to be forced to admit that the Hunter Biden laptop was real and not a Russian disinformation operation.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer announced Saturday that he has contacted the Secret Service for a briefing and is also calling on Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to appear for a hearing. He is opening up an investigation into the shooting.

The FBI early Sunday morning identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pa. Crooks crawled along the roof of a manufacturing plant more than 130 yards from the rally stage at Butler Farm Show grounds.

Early reactions to assassination of Trump attempt: Planned Parenthood of PNW officer calls it ‘acting’

Most leaders across the country issued statements immediately following what appears to have been an assassination attempt on Donald Trump’s life. The former president was grazed by a bullet, which appeared to hit his ear during a rally in Pennsylvania.

Kelly Tshibaka, chair of the Trump campaign in Alaska, said, “This is a devastating and heinous incident. I pray for President Trump’s healing and protection, comfort and blessing for his family, and peace and unity for our nation. I also pray for the families of the attendees who were shot. Democrat leaders are responsible for this assassination attempt and gun violence. They admit Trump is tolerable behind closed doors but scream ‘danger to democracy’ in the media. For the sake of America, it’s time to cease and desist the inflammatory leftist rhetoric.”

Rep. Mary Peltola wrote: “This is an assassination attempt plain and simple. America is better than this. My thoughts are with President Trump and his family, and all at the rally.”

Although Peltola expressed sympathy, last year she was identified by Rep. Mari Glusenkamp-Perez as one who was rebuilding the Blue Dog Democrats into a “rural Antifa.” The shooter was identified as a possible member of the violent Antifa group.

The philanthropy director of Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Northwest, which endorses Peltola, wrote he was “hoping and praying that the acting improves.”

Dustin Morris of Planned Parenthood has since deleted his social media post.

Sen Lisa Murkowski, by Must Read Alaska press time, had not issued a statement, several hours after the shooting. Earlier in the day, at about the time of the shooting, she wrote, “Congratulations to Anchorage’s own Jordan Iverson on completing the open-water triple crown swimming challenge by successfully swimming across the English Channel last month. We can all take a lesson from your determination.” Must Read Alaska will update this report when she does make a comment.

Update: At 6:18 p.m. Alaska time, Murkowski wrote, “What we saw today in Pennsylvania was horrifying. This is the United States of America: there is no place for violence in politics. We are all praying for the health and safety of former President Trump, the family of the bystander who was killed, and everyone who was at the rally.”

Sen. Dan Sullivan wrote, “As all of us await more information, Julie and I are praying that President Trump and those at the Pennsylvania rally are all okay.”

Gov. Mike Dunleavy said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with President Trump, his family and those around him.The world is outraged! This is not how we settle our differences and I hope law enforcement brings those responsible to justice soon. I join millions of my fellow Americans who hope the President makes a speedy recovery.”

Congressional candidate Nick Begich wrote, “Alaska Stands with and is praying for President Trump! Let’s be clear about something right now. NO ONE will divide this nation. We are one nation under God, indivisible and no weapon fashioned against us shall prosper.”

Congressional candidate Nancy Dahlstrom wrote, “My prayers are with President Trump, I hope and pray everyone at this rally is safe.”

Elon Musk wrote, “I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery.”

President Joe Biden issued a statement hours after the shooting: “I have been briefed on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania. I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information. Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it.”

Vice President Kamala Harris wrote, “I have been briefed on the shooting at former President Trump’s event in Pennsylvania.  Doug and I are relieved that he is not seriously injured. We are praying for him, his family, and all those who have been injured and impacted by this senseless shooting. We are grateful to the United States Secret Service, first responders, and local authorities for their immediate action. Violence such as this has no place in our nation. We must all condemn this abhorrent act and do our part to ensure that it does not lead to more violence.”

A Seattle-based reporter posted this comment: “make america aim again.”

A field director for Congressman Bennie G. Thompson, who was the head of the Jan. 6 Commission and who recently proposed removing Trump’s Secret Service protection, wished Trump’s assassin had been a better shot.

Senator London Lamar, a Democrat, wrote that it was the fault of Make America Great Again Republicans:

Brandon Straka commented: “The FBI has dedicated unprecedented resources and money to finding every elderly person who walked into the Capitol building and took pictures, but somehow missed that someone was plotting and carrying out an attempt to assassinate a former and possibly future President of the United States.”

Breaking: Assassination attempt against Trump leaves him bloodied but determined

The crowd ducked for cover and former President Donald Trump touched his neck and then crouched beneath the podium as shots rang out at the Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania today. There appeared to be blood on his hands as Secret Service rushed to him.

The shots were heard at 6:13 p.m. Trump was bleeding from around his ear as agents escorted him to a motorcade. He put his fist in the air and gave it a pump as blood could be seen splashed across his face. Screams could be heard from the crowd, which numbered in the thousands.

The shocking incident happened just before the Republican National Convention begins on Monday, when he will be formally nominated for president.

Trump had been talking about the increase in illegal aliens crossing the border when the shots were fired to his left. Smoke rose from a section of the bleachers and officials quickly shouted for the people to take cover.

The apparent shot that hit him came millimeters away from blowing off his head. How a weapon got through the security station, were there are metal detectors and hand-screening of bags, is unclear.

Update: Eye-witnesses said the shots came from a man with a rifle on a nearby roof. He was shot and killed by Secret Service.

Steven Cheung, a Trump spokesman, said is “fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility.” Cheung said the former president was thankful to law enforcement and first responders for their quick action.

After he left the podium, officials in camouflage clothing escorted someone from the bleachers and cordoned the area with crime-scene tape. Blood was seen on the bleachers.

President Joe Biden said he had not been briefed, but the Secret Service put out a statement:

“An incident occurred the evening of July 13 at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania. The Secret Service has implemented protective measures and the former President is safe. This is now an active Secret Service investigation and further information will be released when available.”

An updated statement was issued by the Secret Service: “During former President Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on the evening of July 13th at approximately 6:15 p.m., a suspected shooter fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside of the rally venue. US Secret Service personnel neutralized the shooter, who is now deceased. US Secret Service quickly responded with protective measures and the former president is safe and being evaluated. One spectator was killed, two spectators were critically injured. The incident is currently under investigation and the Secret Service has formally notified the Federal Bureau of investigation.”

Later, the White House put out a statement: “I have been briefed on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania. I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information. Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it.

USA Today wrote, “Trump removed from stage by Secret Service after loud noises startles former president, crowd.”

CNN wrote, “Secret Service rushes Trump off stage after he falls at rally.”

Biden slips further as Trump lead grows in new poll released Friday

By CASEY HARPER | THE CENTER SQUARE

Former President Donald Trump holds a lead over President Joe Biden in the aftermath of a disastrous debate performance that sent Biden’s campaign into crisis.

The Center Square Voter’s Voice Poll released Friday, just ahead of the Republican National Convention that begins Monday in Milwaukee, shows Trump has a three-point lead over Biden, an improvement for Trump compared to previous months. In The Center Square Voters’ Voice Poll conducted in March, Trump held a one-point advantage in a head-to-head matchup.

The poll was conducted in conjunction with Noble Predictive Insights from July 8-11 and surveyed nearly 2,300 likely voters, including 1,006 Republicans, 1,117 Democrats, and 172 true (non-leaning) independents. It has a margin of error of 2.1%. The Center Square Voters’ Voice Poll is one of only six national tracking polls in the United States.

While Trump has performed well in swing states, national polling has shifted in his favor in a notable way since the presidential debate in late June.

The Center Square poll asked voters: “If the 2024 presidential election were being held today, who would you vote for?”

In response, 46% of surveyed likely voters support Trump, compared to 43% for Biden. Another 12% said they were not sure.

Trump’s bump in polling comes after Biden faltered and fumbled his way through the first presidential debate in late June this year. After that debate, Biden has received public calls from over a dozen elected Democrats to withdraw from the Democratic presidential ticket.

This week, Biden held a NATO news conference where he seemed stronger than his debate performance but mistakenly called Trump his vice president, among other gaffes. That flub immediately became a viral moment that Trump publicly mocked, and it came shortly after Biden mistakenly referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as “President Putin,” who is president of Russia.

Biden has remained insistent that he will remain in the race, but at least for now this poll and other recent polling shows a more difficult path forward for him.

“In our polling as well as in other publicly available surveys, we have seen Democrats slip on Biden,” David Byler, chief of Research at Noble Predictive Insights, told The Center Square. “Some Democrats have gone from the Biden camp to unsure. Some Democrats have gone from the Biden camp to a third party candidate. There is general unease among Democrats with respect to Biden’s candidacy.”

The poll also asked Democrats that, if they could wave a magic want and select any candidate to top their ticket, two-thirds preferred someone other than Biden.

Another question in the poll gave likely voters a chance to also select Robert F Kennedy Jr, Cornel West, or Jill Stein alongside Trump and Biden.

Under that question, Trump received 43% support while Biden received 40% among likely voters. RFK Jr. received 7% support while West and Stein each received 1%.

The poll also suggests that a significant portion of Biden’s supporters are what Byler called “soft,” meaning they support Biden but are willing to jump ship when given the opportunity.

“In the vast majority of public polls that test the two-way and the five-way matchup, essentially what you see is either equal falloff or more falloff for Biden into the third party and unsure camp,” Byler said. “That’s been a pattern that we’ve seen in various surveys, prior to this one … and in other publicly available surveys that typically it is Trump who benefits from third party candidates on the ballot rather than Biden.”

Notably, Trump does better with men while Biden does better with women. Trump has 50% support from men while garnering 42% support from women.

Biden, on the other hand, has 41% support from men and 46% support from women.

Trump also has 18% support from Black voters, according to the poll. While Biden does much better, Trump’s support is much higher than Republicans have historically been able to rally among Blacks.

Biden has an edge with Trump among Hispanics, beating him 47-41%.

Sullivan: Trump will restore peace through strength

U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan said that the leaders whom he spoke with at the recent North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit agree that the world is now consumed by chaos.

In a column in Friday’s Wall Street Journal, Sullivan pointed out that dictators in Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea are working to undermine the free world.

“There’s little doubt why they feel emboldened: Under the Biden administration, U.S. military readiness has significantly diminished,” he wrote.

Authoritarians sense weakness in America’s military, Sullivan wrote. “America urgently needs to embrace the philosophy of peace through strength that has guided Republican presidents from Ronald Reagan to Donald Trump and kept our nation safe. Thankfully at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee next week, Mr. Trump will present the Republican Party’s plan to do exactly that should he be re-elected in November.”

The Republican Party platform, which was released earlier this week, calls for making America’s military the “most modern, lethal and powerful” force in the world.

Sullivan, who is the one Alaska congressional member who works earnestly and consistently for a strong national defense, said the Democrats “have targeted the nation’s defense budget since at least Jimmy Carter’s presidency at the expense of our military readiness and national security.”

Biden this week is taking credit for the increased number of NATO members, Sullivan pointed out that more of NATO’s strength is likely due to Trump’s “bare-knuckle warnings” to America’s allies.

“In each year of his presidency, Mr. Biden has proposed budgets with inflation-adjusted cuts to the Defense Department, while posting double-digit increases for such agencies as the Environmental Protection Agency and the Education Department. The president has America’s defense spending on track to drop below 3% of GDP within the next two years for only the fourth year since the end of World War II. This is the wrong signal to send to dictators like Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, who are building up their military forces,” Sullivan wrote.

Not only does such weakness fail to give confidence to Americans, the military is facing its worst recruiting crisis in more than 50 years. America’s Navy has been left in its worst state for designing, building, maintaining, and crewing ships in over 40 years, experts from the Congressional Research Service told Sullivan.

“Meanwhile Mr. Biden’s Navy secretary is obsessively focused on climate change,” Sullivan wrote.

Then there’s the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, which resulted in 13 American service members being killed, and the fact that the Biden administration has enriched Iran by refusing to enforce sanctions.

“The White House also lifted oil sanctions on Venezuela while aggressively seeking to shut down energy production in the U.S., including in my home state of Alaska. Don’t forget that Mr. Biden rewarded Mr. Putin by banning new U.S. liquefied natural gas projects and delaying every major weapons system Ukraine’s leadership has asked for,” Sullivan wrote. “Biden’s record on defense and foreign policy is a continuation of a Democratic tradition. Mr. Carter cut defense spending in his first three years of office. The Russians and Iranians took advantage of America’s weakened posture, which forced him to increase spending at the end of his term. Bill Clinton cut the size of our military by a third, upending a decade of progress under the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations.

Military readiness started declining when President Barack Obama slashed the Pentagon’s budget by 25%, leaving three out of 58 Army brigade combat teams at the highest level of readiness in 2015, during his second term.

Obama’s infamous “red line” in Syria led to the flourishing of Islamic State and an emboldened Iranian terrorist regime, Sullivan reminded readers: “In the runup to Mr. Putin’s invasion of Crimea in 2014, Mr. Obama opted to send the Ukrainians ready-to-eat meals and blankets when they needed weapons and ammunition. He was also reluctant to build up American forces in the Baltics and Poland.”

Trump cleaned up these messes.

“He worked to rebuild America’s military might and readiness, destroyed ISIS and delivered lethal weapons to Ukraine,” Sullivan continued, and Trump also deployed thousands of troops to Eastern Europe, crippled Iran’s economy and unleashed American energy dominance. His policies kept Moscow, Tehran and Beijing in check.

The Republican Party’s platform and Trump could reverse the precipitous decline now evident to most Americans.

“The Democratic National Committee hasn’t yet unveiled its 2024 platform, but if past is prologue, it won’t be promising,” he said.

In 2020, the Democrats’ platform was to cut defense spending, and attempt to project strength through diplomacy only, saying that America could maintain a strong defense for less money. That’s not proven to be working under the Biden Administration.

Sullivan ended his column by stating that “for the vast majority of Americans who want to see America’s strength restored and the world’s dictators checked, the choice in November couldn’t be clearer.”

GOP platform: Secure borders, tax cuts for workers, curb inflation, grow energy dominance, end weaponization of government against citizens

The Republican National Convention meets in Milwaukee, Wisc. starting Monday, but the platform committee has been busy crafting the party platform that will be voted on next week.

DEFEAT INFLATION AND QUICKLY BRING DOWN ALL PRICES

The party commitment to Americans on the economy:

“The Republican Party will reverse the worst Inflation crisis in four decades that has crushed the middle class, devastated family budgets, and pushed the dream of homeownership out of reach for millions. We will defeat Inflation, tackle the cost-of-living crisis, improve fiscal sanity, restore price stability, and quickly bring down prices.

“Inflation is a crushing tax on American families. History shows that Inflation will not magically disappear while policies remain the same. We commit to unleashing American Energy, reining in wasteful spending, cutting excessive Regulations, securing our Borders, and restoring Peace through Strength. Together, we will restore Prosperity, ensure Economic Security, and build a brighter future for American Workers and their families. Our dedication to these Policies will make America stronger, more resilient, and more prosperous than ever before.”

Norman Rogers: Why wind power is useless

By NORMAN ROGERS

Renewable electricity, mostly wind power, is useless in every dimension. It is extremely expensive but is made to look cheap by hiding an 80% subsidy. It is an exorbitantly expensive method for reducing CO2 emissions. Industry lobbyists and sinister environmental organizations, like the Sierra Club, have manipulated public policy to milk taxpayers and electricity users for billions.

According to the Sierra Club, wind power electricity is economically viable without government assistance. This pronouncement of the Sierra Club has no relationship to reality. For the Sierra Club the most worrisome thing about wind power, something they avoid mentioning, is that the propellors kill birds.

The government subsidizes wind power. Some of the subsidies are upfront. Others are hidden in tax rules or created by using law to change the bargaining balance between wind power providers and electric utilities.  The biggest federal hidden subsidy is “tax equity financing”, a masterpiece of accounting obscurantism.  The biggest state level subsidy is renewable portfolio laws. These laws require the use of renewable energy to generate electricity and require ever increasing proportions of renewable energy in the electric grid. Wind and solar are the main types of renewable electricity. These laws may be the biggest subsidy, although their subsidy nature is obscure and probably invisible to the naïve legislatures that passed them.

Renewable portfolio laws that force utilities to purchase renewable power in ever-increasing amounts makes the market for renewable power a sellers’ market by increasing demand. Only a limited number of big companies with experience and financial resources can build massive, utility-scale wind or solar farms. Given the competitive calculus, these companies are only willing to build plants with long-term contracts that reduce risk. Typically, there are 20- or 25-year contracts called power purchase agreements or PPA’s. A wind farm with a guaranteed contract to purchase all the power generated for 25 years becomes something more like a treasury bond than a business. Frequently the utility is even obligated to pay for ghost power that was not generated because the grid could not accept the amount of power available in certain circumstances.

Having guaranteed long-term contracts signed before a shovel of dirt is turned changes everything. The wind farm owner can accept a far lower return on his investment because he has less risk. Further, the wind farm can be flipped to an infrastructure investment fund that specializes in long-term, low-risk investments. That is the exit strategy for wind farm owners.

The risks are borne by the utilities and ultimately by the government, the ultimate backer of electric utilities.  The utilities tend to be enthusiastic believers in wind and solar, not because those are good solutions or economic, but because the utilities are willing to agree to any irrational nonsense that enhances profits. They are empowered by public utility commissions to pass exorbitant costs along to their customers.

Due to the complicated and deceptive nature of government subsidies it is difficult to directly compute the size of the subsidy. Here we use an alternate method of estimating the subsidy. We look at what price a wind power company, operating without subsidies or long term contracts, would have to get for its electricity to make a reasonable profit. We compare that to how much an electric utility would be willing to pay for the power, absent government compulsion. If the price the wind power company needs for the wind power is greater than what a utility would be willing to pay, then the difference must be made up with a subsidy, either from the government or from electricity users.

Wind power is intermittent power. It waxes and wanes with the wind. For that reason, a utility cannot count on wind power. The utility must have power plants it can count on to keep the lights on. It only makes sense to purchase wind power when the cost of the wind power is less than the cost of alternative power sources available to the utility. Due to its sporadic nature, wind can never replace reliable, dispatchable plants. Wind can only sporadically substitute for reliable plants in those temporary periods when wind is cheaper than using the cheapest alternative source of electricity.

What price does a wind power company have to get for wind power to make a reasonable profit? We estimate if a wind power company builds a one-billion-dollar wind farm it needs $154 million per year from power sales. Of the $154 million $20 million is for operating expense and the rest is net revenue. Assuming the wind farm has a life of 20 years this corresponds to 12% interest on the billion-dollar investment. That is a reasonable return for entering a highly risky business. But if the wind power company has a 20-year guaranteed contract to deliver power, the risk changes and 8% interest may be profitable.

A $1 billion wind farm would have a nameplate capacity of 400 megawatts. The nameplate capacity is the maximum output power when there is sufficient wind. But since the wind isn’t always blowing strong, the average power would be typically be around 38% of 400 megawatts or 152 megawatts. This amounts to 1,337,000 megawatt hours per year. To meet the 12% interest rate goal the electricity would have to sell for the high price of $115 per megawatt hour. To meet an 8% goal, in the case of a guaranteed long-term contract, the company would need about $75 per megawatt hour.

The main competitor to wind power will typically be natural gas generation. The marginal cost of generating electricity with natural gas depends on the cost of the gas and the efficiency of the generating plant. That cost is typically $20 per megawatt hour.

In an unsubsidized world the wind power company needs $115 per megawatt hour, but the electric utility would only be willing to pay $20 per megawatt hour. The difference must be made up by a subsidy from taxes or higher electric rates. The subsidy required is about 83% of the cost of wind power, or $95 per megawatt hour. We offer this as a fair estimate of the wind power subsidy.

Notice that we are comparing the full cost of wind power with the marginal cost of natural gas power. The marginal cost is only a function of the cost of gas and the efficiency with which gas is converted to electricity. The capital cost of the natural gas plant is rightfully attributed to the core generating infrastructure and must be paid regardless of the presence of wind power. Typically the advocates of wind power mistakenly include the capital costs of natural gas in their comparisons, making natural gas seem more expensive.

The U.S. has advanced wind power foolishness to the point where about 10% of our electricity comes from wind. Assuming a subsidy of $95 per megawatt hour, the U.S. is wasting about $41 billion every year on subsidies for wind power, which is around $300 per household annually.

Texas has gone overboard with wind power. Their massive wind system requires an annual $10 billion subsidy. That amounts to nearly $1000 per household in Texas.  The subsidy money comes from federal taxes or increased electricity prices. Other states are subsidizing Texas’ wasteful spending via the federal taxes they pay.

Is Wind Power a Good Way to Reduce CO2 Emissions?

The premise behind renewable power is that it does not generate CO2 and thus helps alleviate the supposed climate crisis. In order to eliminate the emission of a metric ton of CO2 by substituting wind power for natural gas power, one must generate about 3.5 megawatt hours of electricity by wind rather than natural gas. The subsidy required will be about $330 per metric ton of emissions eliminated. But one can purchase a carbon offset that reduces the same amount of CO2 emissions, in the carbon offset market, for about $10 per ton. $330 is an exorbitant price for a carbon offset.

There is little point in reducing CO2 emissions because the Chinese and Indians are rapidly increasing emissions by building coal generating plants. The effect of U.S. wind power on reducing emissions is negligible compared to rapidly increasing world emissions.

The very idea of reducing CO2 emissions is a dubious quest. The science supporting climate fear is speculative. It is not speculative science that increasing CO2 in the atmosphere greens the Earth and increases agricultural productivity. Plants need CO2. They are hungry for CO2.

The Non-Economies of Scale

As one increases the amount of wind power in the electric grid a problem starts to emerge. Wind power is peaky. If all turbines are at maximum output the amount of power is about 2.5 times the average. If wind power on average is more than 20% of the electricity there start to be episodes when there is more wind power than the grid can absorb.

Then the only choice is to curtail the wind output or store the excess electricity for later use, generally in batteries. In either case the cost of the wind power is increased. As a practical matter it is harder to reduce output from a coal plant to make room for wind power. In the case of a nuclear plant, it makes no sense because the cost of nuclear fuel is extremely low, perhaps 4 times less than natural gas. For this reason state renewable portfolio laws requiring 50% or 60% renewable electricity result in very expensive batteries added to the wind or solar farms.

Kill the Wind Industry

It’s difficult for politicians, or anyone, to admit they’ve been conned. It’s time that everyone admits it and we kill the wind power industry.

John Maxwell Hamilton: Take away the car keys

By JOHN MAXWELL HAMILTON

One of the saddest moments of my life was the day I felt compelled to tell my father that he should give up his car and stop driving. He resisted, but only briefly. It was an example of the kind of man my father was.

And it is an example for us today when we consider the peril our republic faces with President Biden clinging to his reelection bid.

We all know the liberating feeling we had when we got our first driver’s license. The opposite feeling comes when it is time to turn it in. In my dad’s case, the problem was diminished eyesight. A resilient man, he had learned to live with many handicaps, including loss of a leg and use of an arm. He told me of a trick he successfully used at traffic intersections to compensate for his difficulty discerning red lights from green: He waited for other cars to move.

Okay, I said, how will you feel if you end up hurting someone? That was all it took. He sold his car.

Such a moment has come now to Joseph Biden. The chances of him winning in November are virtually non-existent. Yet, he continues to make statements that defy reason in order to keep the keys to the White House.

The president’s performance in his recent debate with Donald Trump was a shock to anyone with eyes and ears. His handlers have limited his unscripted interactions with journalists for precisely this reason. Yet he and his staff insist he is as intellectually vigorous as ever and trot out ludicrous excuses for why he stumbled. One of the excuses, jetlag from recent trips abroad, showed the opposite of what was intended – that is, that it takes the president 11 days to recover from travel.

He, and they, argue that he is the best person to beat Donald Trump in November. After all, they say, he is the only one who has bested Trump at the ballot box. On close inspection, however, the statement is nearly meaningless. Trump has only been in two election races, and the one he won was fluky, to say the least. His opponent, Hillary Clinton, ran a poor campaign – and still won the popular vote. Several Democrats have a better chance than Biden of beating Trump this time round.

It is sad to hear Biden claim he is intellectually up to the job at the same time he says the polls are not all that bad. As the RealClearPolitics Poll Average shows, Trump is decidedly ahead of Biden. Moreover, Biden probably needs around 52% of the popular vote to win, given how the Electoral College functions.

It might be comforting to think that there is still time to turn things around. But anyone can see that Biden is losing voters, not gaining them. The best that can be said is that the battle lines have been fixed in Trump’s favor. Biden has been lagging for months and that shows no signs of changing.

It is understandable that the president seeks supportive advice from staff as well as his wife, Jill, and his son, Hunter Biden. We all want reassurance. But we also need to seek out those who will give us a point of view that we do not want to hear.

Contrary to what Biden is claiming, the elites are not out to get him. Taking on the mantle of victimhood only makes Biden seem unhinged – and more like Trump. Polls show that nearly three-quarters of Americans think Biden is not fit to serve, mainly as a result of the impacts of aging.

The issue is not Biden’s age, per se. Donald Trump, 78, is not much younger than the president. The issue is that in recent years Biden’s acuity and physical presence have shown noticeable decline. Whatever one wants to say about Trump, he is vigorous.

One of the great strengths of the Democrats in recent years is that they have a much better record of dealing with reality than Republicans, who have blindly followed a leader whose attachment to the truth is tenuous.

Party leaders now face a test of their credibility.

Some Democratic lawmakers have begun to speak out, urging the president to end his campaign. But more – many more – must step up. They must do what they have said the opposition has failed to do: speak truth to power. Otherwise, an important distinction between the parties disappears along with the possibility of winning the November election.

Like my father, Biden has faced personal hardship and prevailed. That courage is a sign of greatness. I stand with those who believe Biden has many accomplishments and should be proud of his presidency.

But this moment may be his greatest test. True greatness lies in facing facts, not in wishful thinking, and in thinking of the consequences for others, not oneself.

Biden needs to turn in the keys and let the party make a credible fight for the country. That’s what my father, a hardworking American who never pitied himself, would have done. I loved him for it.

Lemon? Alaska Airlines won’t return the jet that lost its door plug to fleet, returns it to Boeing instead

The Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft that lost its door plug midair during an Alaska Airlines flight in January won’t be returning to service at Alaska Airlines. SimpleFlying.com says Alaska Airlines has entered into an agreement for that aircraft, tail number N704AL, to be returned to Boeing and its registration has already been changed. While the jet may end up with another company, Alaska Airlines doesn’t want it back, so Boeing has accepted it as a return. It had only been in service for a couple of months when the door plug left the plane as it was climbing out of Portland, Ore. on Jan. 6.

Boeing paid an initial $160 million to Alaska Airlines as compensation for the blow-out to help cover some of the airline’s costs that were related to losing that aircraft from service. Boeing also gave Alaska Airlines $61 million in credits toward a future jet purchase.

The airline has ordered a MAX 10 model to replace the returned aircraft.

Numerous lawsuits, including a class action lawsuit from passengers, have been filed. According to attorneys for passenger Cuong Tran, Tran’s shoes and socks were pulled off of him by the force of rapid depressurization of the aircraft cabin when the door plug blew off. Tran was saved from being sucked out of the jet because he had his seatbelt tightly fastened.

“He felt his body lift off the seat and his legs were pulled towards the opening,” the lawsuit says.
