An open letter to Senator Mitch McConnell, Minority Leader, U.S. Senate

October 25, 2022

Dear Senator Mitch McConnell:

Stop involving yourself in the affairs of the Alaska Republican Party.

As our party’s state national committeeman, and as a former lieutenant governor of our great state, allow me to explain how we do things up here. As Republicans, we tend to our own business, and we expect others to leave us to it.

Nineteen months ago, our state party censured Sen. Lisa Murkowski “for her votes and actions contrary to the Alaska Republican Party platform and best interests of the State of Alaska.” Our state Party then enthusiastically endorsed Kelly Tshibaka as our official Republican candidate in the 2022 general election for United States Senate.

Senator McConnell, the primary mission of the Republican Party, for which you are a senior leader, is to elect Republicans. As leader of the Senate Leadership Fund, an independent super PAC, your organizations stated objective is to “build a Republican Senate majority.” I submit, sir, that your current vicious negative campaign against our Alaska Republican Party endorsed candidate for United States Senate, Kelly Tshibaka, is not only misguided, but a violation of your organizations stated goal and destructive to the principles and values of the Republican Party.

At a time when you should be laser focused on gaining a large Republican senate majority in next month’s election, you have spent about $9.0 Million dollars in Alaska on negative ads trashing our endorsed Republican candidate. The ads are filled with lies, for which Tshibaka has produced documented proof. They have caused unprecedented anger among state Republicans. So far five local district committees have passed resolutions condemning your actions – including one which pleaded with your Kentucky GOP to intervene – and three influential Republican Women’s Clubs have also called on you to cease and desist.

This weekend the Alaska Republican Party State Central Committee approved a resolution “condemning the egregious, misleading, and divisive behavior of Senator Mitch McConnell and the Senate Leadership Fund.” The resolution further requested the Senate Leadership Fund immediately stop the attack ads against Kelly Tshibaka and discontinue all support of Senator Murkowski. It also requested the Republican Party of Kentucky leadership act against you for your inappropriate behavior against Alaska Republicans and our Republican endorsed candidate, Kelly Tshibaka.

Instead of wasting precious millions attacking an Alaskan Republican, you should be investing every dime you can collect towards supporting Republican senatorial candidates across our great land who are in close races against DEMOCRATS. If Ron Johnson loses his reelection in Wisconsin; or Dr. Oz loses in Pennsylvania; or Mike Lee loses in Utah; or Laxalt loses Nevada; or Blake Masters loses in Arizona, you will be partly responsible for diverting needed campaign funding away from these races to attack a Republican in Alaska who is running against another Republican.

Your job is to elect Republicans to gain a Republican senate majority. On election day, Alaska will again choose a Republican senator. Whether Alaskans elect Lisa Murkowski or Kelly Tshibaka, we are going to send a Republican to the United States Senate, that’s a fact. Stop your vicious smear attacks on Kelly Tshibaka and focus on the races we need to win for America to have a solid Republican senate majority next year.

As an Alaskan, and as our national committeeman, I implore you to stop it, and leave Alaska elections to Alaskans.

Craig Campbell is the Republican National Committeeman from Alaska and served as Alaska’s tenth lieutenant governor.

Downing: McConnell’s proxy war with Trump in Alaska is stuck on stupid

  1. McConnell needs to be voted out of any Republican Leadership positions. He is a RINO at the highest level and his judgement is clouded. Retire and leave you are nothing but a Globalist when we need to focus on America First Agenda.

  2. Yeah, McConnell, butt out! We’re trying hard to end 42 years of the Murkowski Dynasty. Our goal is to take her out. The Murkowski name leaves a rotten after taste in Republican’s mouths.

  3. Spoiler Alert!
    .
Just heard from an inside source …..
If Lisa Murkowski wins her Senate race in Alaska, she will officially change over to becoming a Democrat. That may be the deciding move to keep the US Senate in the hands of Democratic control.
    .
    This is real!

    • That may be in the plans, but only of the Democrats retain the simple majority.
The Senate Majority leader has a large say in who gets on what committees. If the Republicans can pull it off and get 51 or more Seats, self serving Lisa will NEVER change parties. Doing so would prevent her from getting the best seats on the best committees.
      .
And, it is all about power in DC, results are secondary. If it means more power for Lisa, she will change or stay, whatever has the biggest benefit.

  4. This author looks a little stupid crying about the Senate Republican leader opposing Alaska’s Republican party’s chosen Senate candidate. About the only thing looking more foolish is Alaska’s Republicans choosing a carpet-bagging candidate over another Republican candidate supported by McConnell.
I’m sure Mitch McConnell is shaking in his boots over Campbell’s open letter.

  5. Until Jesus is back on earth. we are all we got to have oath integrity & elections integrity. Oath takers do your duty. The citizens vote & put the tax money in the bank. We the people need oath integrity immediately so help us GOD. A good oath taker is the systems fuel. Emulate President Trumps integrity of for and by the people simple, Emulate Jesus for peace on earth. WE GOT THIS TEAM INTEGRITY

  6. I agree, but why should he? It’s not like the AK republicans have a strong record of managing their own internal affairs.

The Democrats run rings around the AK GOP. Why should McConnell sit this out? What means do you have to compel him to do so?

If Lisa wins, she owes him big. If Kelly wins, it’s a direct challenge to his authority.

  7. McConnell cares nothing for Alaskans or what they think. He is an elitist who believes himself to be above the common person and only cares about keeping his power, position, and control.

  8. Craig is a good airport planner and well qualified to manage TSAIA. His views violate the privacy clause of the Alaska Constitution, Craig wants the government between a woman and her doctor. This is not the limited government and personal rights that I and the majority of Alaskans value. If the government can get between a citizen and her doctor, what is to stop government between you and your guns?

    • Frank, China Mitch and Princess Lisa are members of the uni-party, meaning, Mitch and Lisa have more in common with Chuckie and Poop Pants Joe than they do with rank and file Republicans or anyone who values the U.S. Constitution. Despite your love for the death industry Frank, the Constitution is clear that abortion isn’t a Federal issue, thereby making it a States Rights issue. I often wonder why you are so upset over this fact Frank. I mean to say, are you unable to get abortion services here in Alaska? Are you pregnant Frank? Are you employed by Planned Parenthood? Love Margret Sanger and Eugenics much? Maybe you think it’s wonderful that so many Black Babies are aborted?

But then there never is any coercion between the Medical Establishments profits and what they advise their patients is there Frank?

      • You are correct Robert, the State Constitution guarantees a woman’s privacy and that reproductive rights are between her and her doctor. Thank-you for confirming it is a State’s rights issue.

        • Frank, It was not I that confirmed the above, it was SCOTUS and their correct interpretation of the Constitution.
Funny how Princess Lisa can’t figure that out.
Vote Kelly! And then let’s repeal the 17th amendment.

    • So you think ripping a human being from its mothers womb is a women’s right? What about the rights of that voiceless innocent child? Who is going too defend their right too live?
Let’s put this on the woman who gets herself pregnant and puts herself in the position of that possibility. If she doesn’t want children, then she should go get surgery too prevent it, instead of murdering a child.
I am a woman and that is how I feel.

  9. McConnell’s quest to destroy Kelly when the money could be so much more well spent elsewhere is a crystal clear case of dereliction of duty on his part. Easily recognized because he has given us a lot of practice…

  10. While the article is spot on, I seem to remember a time when the local and national republican party stabbed another republican candidate in the back. In fact, this person was the candidate that won the primary vote against Lisa Murkowski all the way back in 2010. Imagine if the republican party in Alaska would have stood up and supported, and protected the candidate we voted for and told the national republican party to take a hike back then? We would have gotten rid of Lisa many years ago. But nope. Randy and the rest of the corrupt bastard’s club in the republican party were always about their cash and power over better and more conservative candidates. Same thing is still going on out in the valley with Carol Carman protecting RINO Rauscher when that area had better candidates running against George.
Good article though Craig. Don’t worry, Mitch is about to have a lot of explaining to do in front of a judge if Trump’s plan works out soon. Let’s revisit where Mitch is this time next year. Buckle up everyone.

  11. If Alaskan local leaders at both the government, corporate, and non profit entities didn’t ask for federal assistance in appropriations every year then McConnell He’d more likely have increased respect for us. Alaska is Owned because of our dependence. Still Alaska should have in its possession The Federal national parks on Alaska, the land allotments should be returned to Vietnam veterans with parcels of land closer to the veterans home communities, and landless Natives communities receive their land allotments. People don’t respect you if you are a Dependent and you have the means to provide for self. Just look at what people think of those obvious on the form of government assistance as those receiving public assistance. We don’t think other states aren’t judgemental toward Alaska’s local leaders for their continuous requests for federal appropriations.
