Alaska Legislative Races: Part II of the 2026 Ultimate Conservative Voter Guide

0

The Legislature makes the laws and decides how to spend state money. Yes, the Governor can veto, but the Legislature can override any veto with a 2/3rd majority vote. While the Governor has control over the Executive branch, a conservative Governor who wants to effectively influence Alaska’s lawmaking relies on the effectiveness of Alaska’s conservative legislators.

Voters will see on their ballots how legislative candidates are registered whether Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, or some variety of independent. However, that does not reliably inform voters which candidates will fight for conservative policies, or which incumbents have true conservative voting records. That’s where this guide comes in. This guide helps voters understand where independent candidates fall on the political spectrum, which registered Republicans support liberal policies, and which Democrats tend to be more moderate vs far left.

We have combined information from 6 key conservative sources to give voters a comprehensive view of the state legislative candidates and a launching point for further research. Additionally, we give the official MRAK endorsements for each state legislative race. Please refer to the Methodology section for more details on how our endorsements were decided.

At the end of the day, the most important thing is to show up! Freedom and democracy are rare— a fact we often forget— with about three-quarters of people worldwide living under autocratic rule. Let’s exercise our unique responsibility as citizens of a free country.

The Nuts and Bolts

  • October 19: Early in-person voting starts
  • November 3: Election Day

Methodology: How did MRAK determine its endorsements?

Must Read Alaska has combined information from 6 conservative sources to create Part II of the Ultimate Conservative Voter Guide: the Alaska Republican Party’s official endorsements, Alaska Family Action’s “vote your values” voter guide, Americans for Prosperity Action- Alaska endorsements, the Freedom Index, ivoter, and CPAC. This gives voters a comprehensive view of each candidate and a launching point for further research.

MRAK determined its endorsements based on this belief: movement to the right is better than movement to the left. This belief guided the following rules:

  1. All conservative candidates are endorsed— note: this does NOT mean all Republican candidates are endorsed.
  2. If there is a liberal candidate in the race, all conservative-leaning candidates are also endorsed.
  3. If the race has a liberal candidate and multiple conservative or conservative-leaning candidates, MRAK recommends ranking the conservative candidate #1, and the conservative-leaning candidate #2. If there are two conservatives, MRAK recommends ranking both in either order.
  4. If the race does not have a liberal candidate, the strongest conservative candidate in that race is endorsed.
  5. Registered Republicans are not automatically assumed to be conservative. Registered Republicans who lack sufficient information are called “wildcards” and do not receive endorsement.

An MRAK endorsement means that this is the candidate in this particular race that we believe will best protect conservative values and policy in Alaska in comparison to the other candidates in that particular race. An MRAK endorsement does not mean that we support every position, opinion, or vote belonging to this candidate.

Quick View: The Game Plan

Offense: either the House or Senate race or both present a chance to replace a liberal with a conservative.

Defense: either the House or Senate race or both has a conservative incumbent that must defend against liberal challenger(s) or a conservative incumbent is not running for reelection.

No challenge: ballot where neither the House nor Senate seat will significantly change (significant defined as going from liberal to conservative or vice versa). Most of these races have either one candidate running, multiple liberal candidates running, or wildcard candidates; and no MRAK endorsements. A notable exception is House District 27 in which conservative David Eastman is challenging the conservative incumbent Jubilee Underwood. MRAK endorsement favors the stronger conservative, in this case, David Eastman.

ALL CAPS: ATTENTION: there is a liberal Republican on this ballot.

Italics: this candidate served in the 34th Alaska State Legislature and is either running for re-election to the same chamber or seeking a transition from the House to the Senate.
