Part 2 to “Opinion: A dangerous election.”
Based on Alaska adopting ranked-choice voting, I would not be surprised if the national register changed the name of Alaska to the State of Confusion!
Attempting to clarify ranked-choice voting and convey a direct message to the electorate in an upcoming election with severe consequences is an extremely difficult task.
Put bluntly, electing JKT as the next governor makes former Governor Walker look like our friend! If JKT is elected, he will finish cleaning up the PFD mess Walker left behind.
No matter what the campaign rhetoric of JKT is, during his legislative tenure, JKT voted to reduce your PFD each year for an entire decade. Convincing Alaskans that he will stabilize and grow the PFD is like hiring a fox to manage a hen house while expecting a meaningful return on your investment. He promotes a history of “working across the aisle.” Is this part of his bi-partisan outreach he is attempting to convince us of?
JKT has a bold vision which requires investment. Where do you suppose he plans to find the money for this investment? He has the brilliant idea to tax the oil companies, namely Hilcorp because they are not paying “their fair share.” Where have you heard that progressive talking point? Increasing entitlement programs while taxing the “other” guy is a tried-and-true practice for the progressive left. What they fail to tell you is that the “other guy” passes the tax burden directly to you.
Alaska has experienced an outmigration of citizens for over 6 years now. Would you expect taxing our largest financial customer may exacerbate more outmigration? Alaska loses billions of revenue each year in our private sector when we experience out-migration.
JKT wants to expand Medicaid. He fails to mention that Alaska is currently paying over $50 million to subsidize native care on Medicaid when this is solely a federal obligation.
A democrat never met a government program they didn’t like.
JKT declares himself as an “education candidate” by promoting a constitutional amendment which will force the state to forward fund public education. Sounds like a noble idea, but what are the chances of 2/3rds of the legislature voting to amend the constitution? This is campaign poppycock.
In actuality, the democrat guard at the public education door is the Blaine Amendment which is embedded in our state constitution to prevent any funding of alternate education. JKT would rather pass an amendment to fund failing schools than promote an amendment vacating the Blaine Amendment which would breathe competition back into our public schools. This is precisely why Alaska ranks at the bottom of the barrel in academic achievement.
Whether you like Donald Trump or not, he has been one of the most consequential presidents in recent history, elevating the rights of Alaskans to determine our resource future. Do we really want to waste the last two years of Donald Trump’s legacy by electing a democrat governor who wants to pepper Alaska with windmills and call it a day of thoughtful energy expansion?
This partial list of JKT priorities is a reason for all Alaskans to take heed.
Now, allow me to unpack this RCV red herring and attempt to give it clarity.
First, before I do, both political pundits and select candidates need to stop attacking the process and accept that RCV is the manner in which we are going to circumvent impending democrat control. Rest assured, if we continue to hear bickering and noise from conservatives who are attempting to circumvent RCV, they should apply for a job in the JKT camp for they are working directly to elect him.
It is obvious that the only way to beat JKT in the general election is to encourage everyone to rank all 3 conservative candidates. It is far less important what priority ranking you give than that you simply rank all three.
Here are the pitfalls.
- Anyone who is encouraging only voting for one conservative is, in effect, voting for JKT by lowering his victory threshold. It is that simple.
- Advertising “Ranking the Republicans” may be dismissive to the general electorate as roughly 2/3rds registered voters are not registered republican or democrat. They are mostly Independent, non-partisan, Libertarians and a few cerebral people registered with the Clown Party.
Given this, the Republican Party candidates, in a very thoughtful way must communicate directly to this large voter base and encourage them to rank the conservatives. All of them!
Ultimately, Alaskans need to decide what Alaska do we wish to raise our family in. Alaska already has twice the government per capita than any other state in the nation. The last thing we need to encourage is more government. Choose wisely by ranking all three conservatives. This will ensure a brighter future for all Alaskans, not a select few.
