NRA gets an ‘F’ — along with Rep. Mary Peltola

The National Rifle Association made a shocking endorsement. The group endorsed Rep. Mary Peltola, who is on the record — many times over — favoring gun control.

Just two years ago, the NRA rated Peltola with a “D.” Now, an endorsement? What has changed? Even the Gun Owners of America has rated Peltola with an “F.”

Peltola wants gun control measures, such as universal background checks, waiting periods, and gun storage laws.

According to The Washington Post in 2022, “During her campaign, Peltola said she wants a national law protecting abortion rights and favors some gun-control measures, such as universal background checks.” (Azi Paybarah, “Who Is Mary Peltola, The First Alaska Native In Congress?”)

On a questionnaire for the Anchorage Daily News, Peltola supported universal background checks and waiting periods for gun purchases.

“We can take common sense action, and we must. Provisions like secure storage laws, reasonable waiting periods and universal background checks can make all of us safer while still preserving the rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment.” (“Q&A with Alaska U.S. House candidates: Do you support gun control legislation?,” she told the ADN on Aug. 2, 2022.

In 2022, she told Time magazine, “Of course, I support background checks. I don’t think that that is an infringement on Second Amendment rights. I would like to see the particulars of an assault weapons ban, because they are used in some instances in hunting in Alaska. And they are tied to food security. But right out of the gate, no, I don’t support a complete ban on all assault rifles.” (Eric Cortellesa, “How Mary Peltola Plans To Beat Sarah Palin A Second Time,” Time, 9/14/22)

In an interview with the Anchorage Daily News published Sept. 9, 2022, Peltola said, “I think that it’s reasonable to ask law abiding gun owners, which most of us are, to accept a reasonable waiting period. I think that increasing the age limit, to have access to certain guns and ammunition to 21, is an acceptable change. I think that certainly we have to do a lot more in terms of gun safety, you know, within the people who are part of the gun culture. And, I say, and it’s a weird word to use, but for those of us who grew up in households that rely on guns and ammunition for food security, there is a distance between understanding what we’re seeing nationwide in terms of the gun violence.”

And in an interview with PBS aired Sept. 1, 2022, she said she wanted to look more closely at President Biden’s “assault weapons ban.”

The reporter asked her, “And, Republicans are clearly going to be trying are trying to tie you to the National Democratic Party. I want to ask you about one issue. President Biden, in the last few days, has been talking about an assault weapons ban. Is this something you would support if it came up for a vote, which I understand it may come up and in the months to come?”

Peltola replied, “I’ll need to look more carefully at the details of that proposal. I think it is noteworthy that Bethel, Alaska, my hometown, had the first school shooting in our nation. I think that many of us, I’m a mom, I’m a grandmother, of course, I’m very concerned about this epidemic that we’re seeing. But I do want to make sure that Alaskans understand that I am a staunch advocate for our Second Amendment rights. I myself have 176 long guns in in my home. We are avid hunters. We are very, very tied to our subsistence resources and having access to wild game, and really, the most important factor in terms of being a successful hunter is having access to guns and ammunition.”

She pivoted in October of 2022 and said that gun rights were intended to be able to put food on the table, but that stricter laws are required.

It’s unclear why the National Rifle Association gave Peltola its endorsement this year. Was it looking for a Democrat who it could endorse? Or has the organization simply lost its mojo after multiple internal distractions? Alaskans who are Second Amendment defenders are asking these questions and more.

Here’s what one highly engaged member of the NRA in Alaska said: “NRA’s track record is bad … They botched the Hopkins-Tomaszewski endorsement last cycle in Fairbanks … Aoibheann Cline, the NRA regional person assigned to Alaska, didn’t listen to local people (like me) who have been doing those endorsements for over 20 years & she decided to ‘reward’ Grier for taking his name off bad Rep. Adam Wool gun legislation — against the advice of long time Alaska NRA advisors.”

  1. Gun Owners of America rates members on issues having nothing to do with 2nd amendment and firearms issue. Lisa Murkowski earned an A for much of her career. GOA never had a kind word for her.

  2. Her positions on the 2nd A and firearms in general could turn on a dime depending on the direction of political winds.

  3. Peltola’s statement is as senseless as it is misguided. As most on here know, the 2nd amendment has absolutely nothing to do with hunting, or even personal protection. Also, for any politician, especially a democrat politician, to make the statement “I myself have 176 long guns in my home” is David Hogg -level stupid.
As for the NRA endorsement, it makes no sense. Maybe the NRA is going to “DEI” style endorsements…..

  4. Must read Alaska I honestly don’t know how your team can do it please do not go home & just give up. We the people here you & appreciate you & we together we Are going to take it back. MAGA if you don’t vote you could care less GOD is hiring doers who know fake evil & oust it with a vote.

  5. Adam Wool, the former bar owner who turned out dozens of young, inebriated drivers on the Parks Hiway four or five nights a week. Then he becomes a legislator and tries to take people’s guns away. Wool created more safety issues with his bar than anyone with guns. Hopkins, a huge proponent of marijuana use and he was a prime mover to petition marijuana on the ballot a few years ago. His brother in law, Scott Kendall, is Alaska’s most visible mover of Democrat petitions. The NRA regional person must have been smoking lots of dope with Grier Hopkins at Adam Wool’s bar, while Scott Kendall was slipping money to the NRA person to boost his bro-in-law into the legislature. Frank Tomaszewski came along two years later and retired the doper Hopkins. That’s the story.

    • Thanks Sam for keeping the facts straight and repeat as often as needed to remind voters who they may be filling in the oval for.
Paul Harvey would be proud of your efforts(:

      • Facts are very important things. Wool, Hopkins, and Scott Kendall would try to obfuscate the facts and have you believe that they are the ones trying to protect you.

        John Coghill for Borough Mayor.
        Frank Tomaszewski for House.
        Mike Cronk for Senate.

        These men are the protectors.

  6. Peltola is myopic regarding gun rights. She views them only as they pertain to hunting…. which is not even the reason the 2nd Amendment was created. In fact, it was created primarily to protect us against people like her.

  7. The Peltola endorsement is nothing short of preposterous. The GOA exists because the NRA wimped out decades ago. The NRA often goes into hiding when there is a mass shooting incident, while the GOA meets the liberal media head-on. I long ago equated the NRA with the Nat’l Right to Life Committee: controlled opposition. The demonization of the NRA by the media is what has kept NRA members strung along. The logic has been: “If the media hates the NRA that bad, they must be doing something right.” Might be time for many NRA lifers to join the GOA.

    • The NRA needs burned to the ground and rebuilt without the any of the current clowns being involved or even never being rebuilt. The only use they really have is being the scapegoat of gun rights while the real rights warriors continue racking up court victories. The Fraud Peltola needs to be relegated to being a bad memory.

  8. If one could see Trump’s thought cloud on 13 July, I’ll bet it would go like this: “How the h*ll did that crazy young kid get an assault rifle? He shouldn’t have access to them, and in fact, they shouldn’t even exist.” But of course, Trump would never confess to it. That’s because partisan politics trumps everything – even getting shot at.

    • Wow… you can read minds. How cool. What am I thinking now???
Oh… you got that correct as well. Whidbey is a leftist jackhole that is incapable of saying anything rational about the folks on the right side of the political aisle.
      .
And, I am pretty sure that President Trump is not going to start punishing law abiding and responsible citizens because of the actions of an obviously mentally disturbed criminal.

    • Give me a break whidbey. He got an assault rifle from the cia or the fbi. Are you that stupid??? It’s either that or we have the most incompetent police and secret service that ever walked the planet. I can’t hardly imagine all those armed police and secret service personnel were that dumb. So I pick the first. It was a pre meditated assault on Trump. It was sanctioned by your liberal blud sucking violent democrats.

      • Matthew Crooks was the lone gunman just like Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone gunman.
We aren’t FreeMen living in a Constitutional Republic.
That was over 60 years ago when the Deep State, unequivocally, assassinated JFK.
We are all pawns in the matrix.
Begich will be our savior, right?

    • Nope, President Trump was more likely thinking:
How the H**L did the USSS screw up so badly and make me a sitting duck? Are these guys really this incompetent?

As it turns out they are, as I refused to contemplate the only other option.

That being said, WTD, “gun control” is a patsy for the refusal by politicians to actually deal with the real problem: Evil People.
A gun is an inanimate object. There are millions of law-abiding gun owners, who will never shoot at, let alone hurt anyone with their firearm in their lifetime. The failure of our political leaders to have the fortitude to enforce the laws on the books and instead let criminals roam free to prey on all, is the true danger we are facing and absolutely no additional “gun control” laws on paper are going to change that!

    • Hell freezes over: Whidbey Thedog is now reading Trump’s mind. What skill. What insight! It’s almost like he’s a savant of a certain order.

    • Whipped Canine, you are now channeling Trump? You always express your derision for the man, now this. Hey wait a minute, are you an ultra blue lib-tard TURNCOAT? A closet Trump admirer. Shame. SHAME

    • Whidbey,
Go back and keep smoking your load of pot. Your mind is full of fantasy and your brain is full of fog.
Get more rest, too. Your old age is showing.

        • Then find a commie Democrat friend with an extra thumb. Most normal people could hold a cigarette between 1st and 2nd fingers.

    • Hey Dog guy, why don’t you go and look up the definition of “assault rifle” and report back to us. So-called “assault rifles,” (meaning full-auto) were banned from ownership by American citizens in 1934. However, one can obtain a special ATF permit to own an assault rifle; the process is arduous, requiring a background search and months to qualify for and obtain the permit.

As to the Trump assassination attempt, even if the idiot used a so-called “assault rifle,” that is not a good platform as a sniper rifle. The USSS sniper, on the other hand, was using a sniper rifle. The results of the entire event speak for themselves.

    • His thoughts were the same as any other rally day. Does this town have McDonald’s or a Burger King? Alright!

  9. Murkowski and Peltola are two peas in a pod. Both are not serving Alaska but themselves and the democratic party

  10. Absolute morons endorsed Rep. Mary Peltola from Alaska. An Alaskan board member, Wayne A Ross, can tell you she is anti-gun.
I’m done with the NRA. Have been an unhappy member for decades of its stupidity, infighting and corruption.
I am canceling my lifetime membership today

  11. Got a text the other night from “Team Mary.” It touted her NRA “A” rating/endorsement.

I about browned my skivvies. WTH are they thinking?

Next time NRA asks for money, I will take up this issue with them!

  12. The once great NRA was ruined by corrupt Wayne LaPierre and his compliant board. I dumped the NRA years ago and have never looked back. There are much better orgs to join which truly represent gun owners and defend 2A and if you are a gun owner, join one right away.

  13. That’s the final straw. I just called NRA HQ and, although they don’t make it easy to do, it is possible to cancel. I found I have to send a letter to them canceling my Life Membership. And I’m doing it this morning. Enough of my affiliation with these increasingly wayward leftist tools.

  14. Gun Owners of America is at gunowners.org. They have not abandoned us like the NRA has. Tearing up my NRA card, this is the last straw.

    • The NRA was over 25 years ago.
You were too busy voting for Murkowski too notice – don’t worry though, Begich will save us all – he shot a gun in his political ads when he finished in third place, two times in the last election – so he’s a real conservative.
      Wake up people!!!

  15. In 2008 NRA have not been mentioned Ron Paul in it’s runner up line up.
The Second amendment absolutist Ron Paul, that would abolish background checks and ATF same day.

  16. Next they will Give an A to Nasty Pelosi. THEY VOTE THE SAME! This is insanity. I can promise The NRA will be hearing from me over and over on this! I want the Moron that did this fired! Complete Lack of trust otherwise. Call them, blow up their switch board. This must not stand!

  17. So you’re fed up with the NRA after they fail to be far-Right enough for you all. What an interesting phenomena – watching people turn on those for whom they previously gave their rabid, full-throated, and fanatical support. My my, how times have changed.

Soon, the same thing will happen with your support for Trump. In fact, you can already see the cracks starting to form. He’s old, he’s cruel, he’s unstable, he’s incompetent, and he doesn’t care a whit for any of you. So fun to watch him slide into irrelevance, as his poll numbers fall even faster than his net worth.

    • “He’s old, he’s cruel, he’s unstable, he’s incompetent, and he doesn’t care a whit for any of you.”

Sadly for you, you tried so hard to “ding” Trump, but failed spectacularly by instead describing Pedo Joe, the head of the Biden Crime Family…..

    • Dog
You’re so far off base you must be on another planet or your studs are real good. I did not think that there are people like you that want to be controlled and used like a wet paper bag.

  19. Thanks to Greg Collins for the interaction on this issue. He gave me a contact whom is on the NRA Board of Directors, whom was NOT pleased with this as well! His response to me was: “Thanks, Mike. Surprised the hell out of me, too. ILA did the same in Texas House leader race.
Check w them or the officers. Board doesn’t do endorsements, even when they piss off all of us.”
I just was on the phone with NRA/ILA. This person has been getting calls about this as well. Some not as reasoned or nice as mine. Folks, yes be angry but be polite, firm and reasoned, please. This ILA person is reaching out to one of the people involved in this endorsement, in Washington D.C. to call me back. He is also reaching out to the State Grass Roots Coordinator to contact me as well.
Please, keep up the calls, ask to speak to the endorsement people on this as well as the State Grass Roots Coordinator. We have the Jungle Primary coming up on the 20th of August, can this endorsement impact the primary? We will see. What is most important is the General and getting out firearms owners votes to oust Mary! Sadly some vote on endorsements only, or if a R or D. We must inform these voters to ensure Mary spends only on term in the People House!
    To all fellow NRA members.
    Call +18006723888.
In first call to NRA/ILA, reasons given is she voted for 2A bills! As I told them these were bills to appease and her handlers let her knowing the bills would never go past the Senate!
I understand, haven’t had time to read all comments, that there are folks calling for and dropping membership. You have no voice once you dropout! Yes, call, refer to this article with quotes by Mary.
