NPR, PBS defunded in final House vote. Trump signature is next

In a narrow vote just after midnight, the US House of Representatives passed a $9 billion rescissions package, reversing previously approved spending and sending it to President Donald Trump for his signature. The bill passed 216-213 at 12:04 am., following earlier Senate approval by a 51-48 margin.

The legislation is the first rescissions package to clear both chambers of Congress in nearly 50 years. It includes a $1 billion cut to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which supports PBS and NPR, and cancels various other unspent funds, including allocations for foreign aid.

Republican lawmakers framed the bill as part of the Department of Government Efficiency targeted cuts, necessary to rollback massive government waste. Democrats and Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, criticized the cuts.

President Trump is expected to sign it quickly.

The national debt stands at over $37 trillion, making the $9 billion rescission a mere rounding error. To compare, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) budget was approximately $100.3 billion in Fiscal Year 2024.

  1. Every penny counts, it infuriates me when people try to write off cuts in spending as just mirror percentages of the overall debt. Cut, cut, cut, then it adds up.

  2. Yahoo! Keep cleaning the pork out of the agencies and programs. Get rid of all medicaid moneys not needed for the citizens and residents of this country. Get rid of all donations and gifts of monies because we don’t jve it to give.

  3. The cult members at KTOO in Juneau might be apoplectic right now. But maybe not; they have enough money to keep things going for a long time.

  4. Yeah, the cruelty is the point.

Justifying this as a cost reduction measure is laughable as it is such a relatively small amount in the scheme of things. In order to make a real dent in the debt, Trump will need to cut Medicare and Social Security for the millions of people who voted him. But of course he doesn’t have the balls to do that, so he picks on the little guy as always.

    • News flash WTD generally Medicare and SS recipients ARE the “little guys”.
PBS and NPR are communications behemoths with huge budgets. The average executive makes $225,000 and their former CEO John Lansing was paid $549,701 per year. Pretty great for a “publicly funded” organization, peddling mostly propaganda with the rare “alert announcement” thrown in.
It should further be noted that reducing considerable fraud and waste in both the Medicare and SS programs will keep them solvent, so there are changes to these programs.
That you all of a sudden complain about “not making a dent in the national debt” is laughable on its face, as you clearly had no issue with all those payments to USAID supported entities under the previous administration.
So WTD making a dent is the point. You have to start somewhere….

    • Run a telethon. Get involved with the community if it is so important to you. We have so many other options for communication that are much cheaper. If you are a fan of radio, donate directly! So easy!

    • well dog, why don’t you fork over the 9$ Billion then? & by the way the medicare and SS he wants to cut is from the folks who are scamming those systems, not the folks who need it. Do some research, you dimlibbys are all the same, just believe what the left-wing media tells you to believe and be offended!

    • If it really is a small amount then Arabella and the Soros funding apparatus can step in a take over, same messaging, different funding source. Same with Planned Abortion, inc.

    • Yes it is cruel to get rid of Federal funded, liberal oriented, public stations.
      Cruel to freeloading Democrats.

Maybe w/ the “public” stations off the air, liberals can finally promote successful stations of there own.
      Wait? They cancelled Colbert?
      Nevermind.

    • Cruelty?
OK. Show us where. Your comment points to nothing in this recission bill. I would say nothing cruel, but your comment does not even mention a single item in this bill. So… where is the cruelty.
      .
Can I request you keep your comment relevant at the bare minimum, please.

  5. CPB: a left wing institution that has, in my recollection, never been sued effectively for defamation or for deceptively editing stories or interviews. Government is wasting money supporting that kind of an organization. We can all depend on FOX to give us what we need, right or wrong.

  6. That’s OK, I am sure that George “Picture of Dorian Grey” Soros and Bill Gates (of Hell) will be making up the difference in funding for NPR and PBS. Anything to bring about their beloved 1984-style Big Brother dystopia.

  7. This is a wonderful outcome for taxpayers and for any American that believes government funding should not flow to partisan interest groups. However, Begich and Sullivan are on the ballot next year, and their votes on this funding matter alone will have outside money flowing into Alaska elections in unprecedented amounts to defeat these two: As a matter of fact it’s already happening. Planned Parenthood and public employee unions will import people to knock on doors. Soros dollars given to Alaska Public Media alone will likely replace this very funding cut.

Those of us who cherish Alaska values and fundamental American values had better darn well participate in the 2026 elections. If we don’t do that we will see the woke socialist agenda dominate these elections.

    • Fine, let Soros and Gates continue spending THEIR money on losing socialist causes like public media. As for outside money, until this state’s elections division crawls out from under the rock it’s been hiding under, the money will keep flowing on BOTH sides completely unchecked. Nancy Dahlstrom is incompetent, feckless, and complicit in the corruption of our elections.

  8. Definitely a step in the right direction. Keep DOGEing the federal budget, and apply those savings to the national debt.

They also need to develop a plan to wipe out the national debt. Since declaring bankruptcy, isn’t an option for our country. A solid economic plan to eliminate the debt is needed, and should be followed regardless of who’s in office.

It should be a pork free law, passed by those who are responsible for getting us in this situation to begin with. Yup, the congress and the senate.

Make it into a federal law. Balanced budget law/amendment. Individuals can’t spend more than they earn, so the country shouldn’t either. Making a pork free law requiring a restitution method that directly addresses the national debt makes sense.

The federal freebie train needs to be extremely limited. Nothing is free. Taxpayers always get stuck paying for it. So the tariffs, are an excellent way to pay off our national debt.

Leveling a 5%-10% tariff on all goods imported into the USA to pay it down/off, would be an effective solution to that problem. It could be done without burdening the citizens who are over taxed already.

The national debt is not going away, and the country needs to deal with it now! Not later. Stop stealing from future generations by over spending! The current methods are bankrupting our children’s and grand children’s futures.

Stop kicking the can down the road! Just make and implement a plan and fix this problem.

  9. Didn’t Trump have that big hit “Steamroller Blues”?
“I’m a steamroller baby & I’m gonna steamroll right over you”
    Or was that Elvis?

  10. Lisa Murkowski and her Lefty cronies say people will die. They’ll have no way to receive early warnings natural catastrophies. Well, there is this new fangled technology called the internet which seems to be working well.
