Murkowski’s staff is highest paid of any U.S. senator

Sen. Lisa Murkowski

Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s staff earned an average of $92,454 in 2024, which is 33% higher than the average Senate staff member, according to Legistorm, a website that tracks congressional staff movements.

Murkowski’s staff earns more than any other staff in the Senate, the website reported. Sen. Dan Sullivan’s staff only earns 13% more than the average.

Legistorm reports that staff members for Florida’s two U.S. senators anchor the bottom of the pay scale, earning 22.4% less than the Senate average.

Former Sen. Marco Rubio, now Secretary of State, paid the lowest average salary of any senator, with his staff earning $45,000 on average, 35% below the chamber average and less than half what Murkowski pays her staff.

Murkowski has said she does not agree with President Donald Trump’s efforts to reduce government, saying on the record that reducing federal expenses is fine but he is not going about it the right way; she did not offer a suggestion about what the right way would be.

Earlier this week she indicated on X that cuts to a few dozen federal forestry and park jobs in Alaska will do more harm than good.

  1. I don’t understand what the point of the article is! I though senators were given a fixed amount to run their office. If that is the case, then I could see Murkowski having a smaller than average staff that is on average paid 92k. In contrast Rubio having a larger than average staff that is on average paid 45k. The article does not have enough information to draw any logical conclusion. Did Rubio have the same size staff as Murkowski and he only used part of the allowable allotment while Murkowski spent to the limit?

  2. We told Lisa that Alaska requires higher pay for her staff because Alaska has higher cost of living. Lisa’s answer was,
“But why don’t I get more money than the other senators who live down south?”
Now you know why Lisa failed the Bar Exam 5 times.

  3. They should reduce all of the Senators and Representatives Staff too just 2 or 3 and make these people read their own bills maybe then they will pay attention to what they are voting on, and we will stop these massive 1000-page bills. The current CR making its way through the halls of congress is 15 pages just for the table of contents.

  4. Not an accurate picture: How many staffers does she have compared to other senators? Does she have half as many as Rubio did? I hope they’re worth their pay.

    • George,
I been beating my gums on term limits for years now. I think it would fix a lot more things than it would hurt. I bet a dollar to a donut that the corruption and self serving politions would dwindle.

  5. You have to pay that much when saying you’re a republican but are actually a democrat. So it’s twice the cost- but if you count the TDS then you average out.

  6. Gosh, 33 percent more valuable and 33 percent more productive? Oooweee, I wanna see that movie.
Time for a ‘deep dive’ audit, let’s account for thems Benjamin’s after all, my tax dollars are once again impugned by Murkowski and ‘the staff’ in so many ways.

  7. She is more productive. Her staff always get back to me. Dan’s never does. But I guess she could even up the nitpicky score if she sent a couple of her staffers over to him.

  8. Since she is a RINO, do you think that she is getting money for her staff from both parties and that is why they get paid more?
    DOGE needs to find out.

  9. Not a very honest article, as others have said. The offices get a certain amount of money for staff. More staff means less $ per staff member. Lisa’s staff is a bit slow in their ROBO responses to constituents. But Dan’s staff has never responded to any of my emails

If you want to complain about staff salaries, point your attention to AK legislature staff, some of whom are pushing $150,000

  10. With a new FBI Director and DOJ attorney for the USA, we should have better and truthful investigations. Hope Murkowski will be one of the new investigations moving forward in Trump’s second presidency. Well, I can always hope!

  11. I recently counted all her staff listed and came up with over 40. including those in her Alaska offices. I assume they are paid different amounts due to different duties, but did not check. Does she have more staff than other senators? Just some thoughts on this.
