Just in: Anchorage listed on Department of Homeland Security’s ‘sanctuary city’ list

The US Department of Homeland Security has released its first official list of sanctuary jurisdictions under “Executive Order 14287: Protecting American Communities from Criminal Aliens,” and among the names is Anchorage.

The designation comes as part of a sweeping directive from President Donald Trump requiring DHS to identify local and state governments that, in the department’s view, obstruct the enforcement of federal immigration laws. The list, published publicly for the first time on Wednesday, includes dozens of cities, counties, and states accused of limiting cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or providing legal protections to individuals in the country illegally.

Anchorage has positioned itself as a “welcoming city,” a term of art used by former Mayor Ethan Berkowitz in 2017 to emphasize that city services, including police protection, are available to all residents regardless of immigration status.

This stance, while not explicitly declaring sanctuary status, mirrors sanctuary city policies by ensuring illegal immigrants feel safe and protected by the city from immigration officials.

In addition, the Anchorage School District has recently made a policy to prevent immigration enforcement officers from entering any school district property without a fully vetted warrant.

In a sharply worded statement, DHS said sanctuary jurisdictions “deliberately and shamefully obstruct the enforcement of federal immigration laws,” and accused them of “endangering American communities” by refusing to cooperate with federal authorities. According to the department, Anchorage’s policies restrict communication with federal immigration officers and limit local law enforcement’s ability to comply with ICE detainer requests. This may be in reference to the school district.

“Sanctuary cities protect dangerous criminal aliens from facing consequences and put law enforcement in peril,” the DHS release stated. Each jurisdiction on the list, including Anchorage, will receive a formal notice of non-compliance and a demand to revise policies to conform with federal law.

The Municipality of Anchorage has in recent years adopted measures intended to limit local involvement in immigration enforcement, citing concerns about civil rights and community trust.

In particular, city guidelines have restricted police from inquiring about a person’s immigration status or holding individuals solely on federal detainer requests without a judicial warrant.

The list published by DHS is subject to regular updates and may change as jurisdictions modify their policies. According to the department, the inclusion of Anchorage means the city could face administrative consequences, including potential restrictions on certain federal funds if compliance is not restored.

Local officials had not yet issued a response to the designation as of Wednesday evening. The DHS directive makes clear that jurisdictions wishing to be removed from the list must demonstrate full cooperation with immigration enforcement going forward.

Anchorage’s inclusion places it squarely in the national spotlight and in the same category as California, which identifies as a sanctuary state for illegals. Importantly, even Juneau, as liberal as it is, was not included on the list.

    • more guns by homeowners are needed, plain and simple. we’ll enlist block militias and check for local only residents. with home schooling we can teach our kids early the importance of family values. no need for government over reach, keep it all on the block level.

know your neighbors, keep the lower levels out of our communities, lower property taxes with less cops, school taxes.

free guns to land owners, not mortgage payers to government, own your property. erect fences, get guns, stock ammo. the end times are coming…….for you and your family.

  1. Anchorage residents have known this for some time. Catholic Social Services has been bringing in people for years. Many cannot support themselves and stretch our social services very thin. While the city touts that we are the most diverse I’m sure that teachers have a hard time teaching when more than half of the students in the classroom are not English speakers. This could be one reason our schools are failing.

    • Catholic charities are one of the NGOs which traffic illegals with our tax dollars. They and others receive federal funds to house, feed, transport people who should not be here. Some NGOs even coach illegals in how to lie to Border Patrol to falsely claim sanctuary status. I hope President Trump has cancelled all those contracts. It would be great to see him prosecute those involved for immigration fraud.

      • BSmitty56, take a look at ‘https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/irs-complaint-process-tax-exempt-organizations.
        .
IRS has a pretty simple way of reporting tax-exempt organizations like Catholic Social Services that violate tax-exemption rules.
        .
IRS could revoke their tax exempt staus and make them pay back taxes on all their income to date.
        .
It’s worth a try, especially if a number of people report them.

    • Nows our chance to file complaints against city and state officials to the FBI and ICE for obstruction and abetting crime, kind of like a modern day citizens arrest’s.

  2. Don’t fret, this too shall never be prosecuted. It will be registered as another “You will be shocked”event, never prosecuted, just ‘Shocked’.
So tired of “Just wait” we have found tons of evidence. So just wait.
My broker advised that I have 13 more annual RMD’s from my retirement, I can hardly “Wait”, I’ll be 100 waiting for a prosecution.
In truth, there will be no shock, no prosecutions, no trials, no convictions, and we will never find out on the $32.7 Billion that disappeared between Trump ‘s taking office and Biden losing the election.
    Good luck with being “Shocked”,
    A.M.Johnson-Ketchikan

  3. This is good news. It makes it possible for city officials to get themselves arrested and prosecuted by federal officials. That’s one way to get rid of them if they keep getting elected by 6%-12% of the electorate.

  4. Was a DeFacto sanctuary city when Begich was mayor with his lawyer wife representing and advising illegals then and last I heard, still……

    • Your getting tour libs mixed up. Berkowitz had the attorney wife (now divorced)
Mark Begich’s wife is a small business owner

  5. Why is anyone surprised immigration laws arent being enforced in Anchorage?
Vagrancy, loitering, littering, trespassing, shoplifting, panhandling, public intoxication, drinking and doing drugs in public, public urination and excrementation, public sex acts, assault ALL are not being enforced on a segment of Anchorages population.
Law enforcement in Anchorage has been corrupted by the politicos.
And truth be told – it’s all because of $money$ through the various NGO’s and Non-Profits..

  6. Thank you, Berkowitz, LaFrance and the leftists on the Anchorage Assembly. The Feds see through your obfuscatory language and see your deeds. Woke cuts deep. Anchorage will suffer thanks to your policies. Shame it won’t actually be you who suffers.

  7. The US Air Force and US Army should restrict all personnel from going into the municipality of Anchorage as being unsafe and irresponsible. Additionally federal leases for land from the military such as Davis Park should be revoked and re-secured for military use only.

Anchorage is unable to maintain a level of civilization acceptable for military personnel and should be relegated to people who find such debauchery desirable.
    🐿️🐿️🐿️

  8. Anchorage is soon to be a full sanctuary city as its now just close to full bore as a WELCOMING CITY
Consequently, Anchorage is a totally unsafe community for all incoming tourists.
Signs are be placed at ANC Intl Airport telling incoming passengers of unsafe travel conditions in Anchorage, signs at the railroad station, & notes on any website for tourist operations, signs on two highways that come into Anchorage showing Homeland Security’s new guidance for travelers’ restrictions.

Anchorage is an UNSAFE city in which to travel STAY AWAY

Please contact Anchorage Mayors office and Anchorage Assembly office for further updates on travel restrictions in Anchorage.

  9. Dear President Trump,

Please take away Municipality of Anchorage and Anchorage School District funding as soon as possible. THANKS.

    • Agree! I heard Trump was going to take money away from UAA. Im guessing maybe due to DEI or sanctuary policies. They will get what they deserve – which is nothing.

  10. Remember, we have the “immigrant employment and welcome center” funded by the state and the ribbon cutting by Dunleavy. Don’t just blame the creeps in Anchorage, this goes all the way to the top. And even more importantly, NOTHING is going to be done about any of these “elected” officials doing this to our state. This is one of the many reasons why our broken elections need to be exposed and fixed.

  11. Maybe we can get Pam Bondi to investigate the racketeering, misappropriation of funds, and money laundering the assembly has colluded with some LLCs and NGOs in Anchorge to accomplish? That would be epic!

  12. These sanctuary jurisdictions that use the excuse they want to afford police protection to everybody are not being truthful. Everyone already has police protection legal or illegal. They can report crimes to the police and are afforded all other police services. But in the process, if it comes to light your an illegal alien, it may be brought to the attention of immigration. When you enter or remain in a country illegally (not just the US) that’s a risk you take on. But that DOES NOT mean police services are being with held from you.

  13. We knew that Anchorage had become a sanctuary city years ago! Maybe not on paper but you’d have to be blind or be lining your pockets with cash to not admit the truth!!! You can’t
fool us. The so called Conservative’s have let us down by not voting these shysters out of.

  14. Good.
I hope the Federal Government stops all funding of all programs Muni wide. I sincerely hope this annoys every taxpayer across the city.
    .
Until the population endures the consequences of leftist stupidity, they will continue to remain silent. Voter turn out is abysmal because why? The average person does not care about local politics. And, why is that? Because they do not realize how much their local legislature can screw up day to day life. Until they get their noses rubbed in the mess they made, they will not change their behavior.
    .
And, where are the usually reliable leftists claiming this is proof Trump is literally Hitler? Once again, I am disappointed.

  15. I really don’t like the left wing trying to make Alaska woke again. ☹️👎 Alaska can’t afford the to travel down the dead end road that is lefty politics. We don’t have that much money in our annual budgets to be wasted on the left’s spending spree’s. The Rino’s in Alaska should fess up that they are leftist including the independent lefties. If you are voting for leftism with every vote that maters, then you are not conservative at all, you’re woke, or woke light. Quit screwing over Alaskans, your wok-ism is unsustainable. Just move to California where you can bask in your lefty wok-ism ideology, and all the negative crap that comes with that agenda. Keep your hands off the dividen fund, it’s not a slush fund for the lefty legislature to take. Hands off!
