Following the devastation wrecked by Typhoon Halong on Western Alaska, communities, non-profit organizations, and government entities stepped up to help the Alaskans harmed by the storm. A news release by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) states that State and Federal support for relief efforts exceeds $41 million. Here is what has been accomplished:
- Over 2,000 Alaskans evacuated from affected areas.
- More than 600 individuals from 161 households in Anchorage hotel rooms.
- More than 22,000 meals delivered to individuals sheltering in hotel rooms.
- More than 1,700 applications received for state individual assistance.
- More than 1,200 individuals and households registered with FEMA.
- 805 home inspections completed to assess property damage.
- State and FEMA teams conducted 43 visits to impacted communities to register people for assistance.
- FEMA’s dedicated Alaska Call Center received 1,099 inbound calls and made 2,933 outbound calls.
Alaskans facing property damage due to Halong can apply for aid from FEMA (deadline Dec 22) as well as the State of Alaska’s Individual Assistance program (deadline Jan 8).

Nice list of stuff. How much of this did FEMA do??
I don’t think they were there for the evacuation. ASD prepared meals in our central kitchen to feed people on the short term, and transported people in town to shelters and for showers.
I’d like to think FEMA did something but you’re listing a bunch of stuff other people did.
Yes FEMA was there, coordinating and paying for things, It’s called a collaborative effort and FEMA is the giant wallet with the State of Alaska being the smaller wallet in this. Every thing ASD did that was approved by the State/FEMA will be paid for, same with all the work DOT, Dept of Forestry, the Alaska National Guard etc. Problem is you have never worked in a Joint Field Office or done anything in a large scale disaster so you don’t understand the massive amount of coordination, record keeping and cost accounting needed for this time of event, Thats not a knock thats just most likely the facts. Just like I’ve never run a classroom, a union and a school board like you have.
Andy H, seems as if the ASD did well during the disaster. My question: If the ASD can transport evacuees to shelters and showers, why can’t it transport charter school students to their schools? Remember, the ASD receives funding for every charter school student yet fails to transport those students. This is particularly important to those who are single parents and the lower income households who may not have the means to transport their students to great charter schools. Where is the Equity!
Do what Biden did…give ‘em 750 bucks and tell ‘em to kick rocks. We got Ukraine to pay for.
I’m sure ASD and the MOA didn’t do all of that out of the kindness of their hearts. I’m certain there will be requests for reimbursement from State and FEMA level emergency funds… so yeah in essence FEMA did all that…
Pretend I’m from the federal government. Ok, ready?:
“Let’s demonstrate what we can do with taxpayer dollars and rebuild all those homes so the next massive storm that happens, and it will happen, knocks them out too and we then we can flex our taxpayer-funded muscles again.” Or words to that effect. How did the people of these coastal areas survive for centuries without such government brilliance? They moved seasonally. Sure is fun paying for stupid bureaucrat’s pet projects. Never mind traditional knowledge.
Andy FEMA will probably end up footing the entire bill. FEMA under Trump works FEMA under Biden didn’t do anything.
