The Alaska Department of Education & Early Development (DEED) is proud to announce that three Alaska students have been selected as 2026 U.S. Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school seniors.

The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selected the 2026 U.S. Presidential Scholars following a rigorous review process from an exceptionally talented pool of candidates. Scholars are recognized for their outstanding academic achievement, leadership, service, character, and contributions to their schools and communities.

The Alaska recipients are:

  • Sara Elizabeth DeVolld, Soldotna – Connections Home School Program
  • Liam B. Wade, North Pole – North Pole High School
  • Michelle E. Xu, Anchorage – Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School

“These students represent the very best of Alaska’s young people,” said Commissioner Deena Bishop. “Their accomplishments reflect years of hard work, dedication, and a commitment to excellence. We are incredibly proud of Sara, Liam, and Michelle and congratulate them on this remarkable achievement. We look forward to seeing the positive impact they will continue to make in Alaska and beyond.”

Established in 1964, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program honors some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. Students are selected from every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and U.S. citizens living abroad, as well as at-large scholars and students recognized for outstanding accomplishments in the visual and performing arts and career and technical education.
