With 24 hours to go, more than two dozen have filed for special election for Congress — not all of them Alaskans

24

The filing deadline for the special election to replace Congressman Don Young is 5 pm on Friday, and already 26 people have filed for office with the Division of Elections. Among them are people from Fairbanks, Soldotna, and even La Jolla, Calif.

Anyone can file with the Division of Elections for the special primary, which will be the first statewide election this year. For those who don’t live in the state, they would be required to move here if they won the final ballot in November.

There will be three other elections involving the congressional seat, vacant since Congressman Don Young died on March 18 on a flight to Seattle. The first is the special election primary. After that, a special election general election in August, held at the same time as the regular primary election. Finally, a the process ends with a general election in November, where other races will also be decided, such as state House, Senate, and U.S. Senate.

Many more people are expected to join the already crowded race for Alaska’s only congressional seat by the Friday deadline. The withdrawal deadline for a candidate to remove their name from the special election primary election ballot is noon on April 4.

  1. So far nine Republicans running out of 26 candidates and ranked choice voting in force! How’s that all going to work out? What do we know about any of them but a few? This is the insanity of ranked choice voting!

      • Correction: you vote for one in the special primary and then four in the special general. You vote for one in the regular primary and then four in the regular general. Uniquely you will vote in the special general and the regular primary at the same moment in August 2022.

  2. Well at least the ballots will have a different. person at the top. No pamphlet for the primary, so you have to do your research. I ran once against Young in 2016, the only one who ran against him in the past. At any do your research and Make Alaska Great Again… Not sure if there will be any forums, but I hope to be invited to some events as I make my rounds around the state. I was updating something on Wednesday at the division of election and saw NBC was there with a camera crew. I asked him if they were going to do stories on candidates and he said to contact him, so we will see. How many ballots will be turned in…My platform includes restoring a large percentage of federal lands with an initiative to ensure State and Federal lands become privatized. We have a low amount of privatization in our state. Both the state and federal land management need to work together for resource development. We need to secure funding from private banks that are currently refusing to allow American resources to be developed. The third thing I would like to draft legislation for is the removal of the Jones Act as it is a bad deal for Alaska. Vote Stephen Wright a Congressman with three areas that we must change in the short term to be a stronger state against federal overreach while minimizing state overreach against the private sector.

  3. We need to dump the rank choice voting. This is why all the outside money was pushing it, to keep the wrong people in office, Dump rank choice voting, dump Murkowski, and keep Walker and Giessel out.

    • Archie, while I agree with you on RCV, this to my understanding is what is considered a “jungle primary” and you vote for ONLY ONE candidate. The top 4 vote-getters then go on to the RCV general, where you can then rank them in order of preference.

  4. Oh my goodness! Everyone’s trying to make a name for themselves. Nick will weed them out very fast, very quickly and win hands down!

  5. Wait a sec. I thought Gross, Al was gunna run?

I’m hankering for another opportunity to vote against that clown.

  6. I suppose it would be discriminatory to forbid an out-of-state resident from filing to represent Alaskans in Congress? Next we’ll learn that it’s discriminatory to even reveal their residency. As this culture and society rots to the core, WWIII looks more and more refreshing. Edward Gibbons theory on the cause of the collapse if the Roman Empire looks like the undeniable winner. It collapsed because the Roman citizenry wanted it to.

  7. ….and wonders never cease….not a single registered Democrat on that list.
They must all think we are fooled by the “undeclared/non-partisan” label. If you can’t stand up and declare what side of the isle you fall on, that already sets of alarm bells in my mind. Since this state is supposedly going purple, one wonders why the subterfuge is necessary.

    • And don’t forget, AFH, that many if not most of the self-declared Republicans are Republican-in-name-only. And most of those (such as Princess Lisa) wear their RINO horns proudly, too.

  8. I see heaven is more appealing to those who legitmately left us. Look at all the misery our human selfishness does to us in self serving r-c-v actions? Don young reminded me what ‘peace in the valley’ hymn sings (same with suzanne) they both labor hard and look tired but their work keeps them trudging along through sins muck like what we are to do without complaining.

  9. Measure 2 and Mail-in ballots is only part of the story, checkout the links below to know how the Dominion Machines are used to manipulate your votes and steal elections. Lisa Peters in Mesa County Colorado has bravely exposed how they manipulated the elections in Colorado. The Secretary of State there illegally deleted the 2020 voting data to hide what happened and Tina called her out on it. Representative Eastman has recently said Alaska is using these machines and just purchased another 150 of these machines. What the is our Governor going to do to protect our elections from a corrupt legislature in Juneau? Voter fraud is alive and well in Alaska and it will be up to every concerned Alaskan to put tremendous pressure on the Governor to stop the steal of Don Young’s seat and to place Lisa Murkowski back in office. Get busy folks or lose your voice forever!

  10. So, the democrats aren’t fielding a candidate? …….
In case anyone doesn’t already know, any canditate not certified Republican or Libertarian should automatically be considered democrat or left of democrat. – M.John

    • M. John- you are very incorrect. We happen to be the only party who wasn’t part of the $30t debt. We also happen to be only party not part of PERP Act. We also happen to be the only party fully against the patriot act. We also happen to be the only party not party to corporate bailouts. We happen to be the only party who did not sell out to big pharma regarding National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986. We happen to be the only party who knew 20 years of military boondoggle was a waste of $8t, would not increase Freedom and Liberty in Iraq or Afghanistan and more importantly a waste of America’s most precious resource, her service members and their families.
We are the only party fielding typical Alaskans instead of polictical familia or DC insiders hand picked by the party elite.
We also are the only party without a leading dance partner in Washington….mitch McConnell, chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi and kevin McCarthy. Go on chose your party over Freedom and Liberty owed to All Alaskans. I’d be dang sure your candidate will prioritize Alaskans over party or special interests. However with dance partners like those….don’t hold your breath.
We are the party of Liberty and Freedom for everyone even you. We are the party who thinks typical Alaskans would positively be better than any party. We actually believe you make better decisions than DC. Local control, local authority local accountability.
As for me and my friends, Chris Bye makes the most sense by far. An Alaskan, a combat vet, a fishing guide, a volunteer coach, a good dude.

  11. Chris Bye registered and began campaigning last year, has the party’s endorsement, and has spoken with thousands of Alaskans across the state. I’m glad this new process has inspired so many new people to step forward. The elites put forth by the Republican and Democrat parties have failed us for decades now, leading to 30 trillion in debt, endless wars and the slow erosion of our rights. It’s time for a regular Alaskan like Chris Bye – ‘www.itstimealaska.com

  12. People from out of state filing? US Constitution Article 1; section 2: No Person shall be a Representative who shall not have attained to the Age of twenty five Years, and been seven Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State in which he shall be chosen.
So, are the out of staters going to move here? How do we know that?
Although this does not apply to federal congressional representatives, according to the State of Alaska Constitution; Article 2; section 3: A member of the legislature shall be a qualified voter who has been a resident of Alaska for at least three years and of the district from which elected for at least one year, immediately preceding his filing for office. A senator shall be at least twenty-five years of age and a representative at least twenty-one years of age.
I don’t understand how they can even be certified, but, since it is constitutional…This is madness1

  13. This is going to be great fun. Look how it’s already energizing discussion. Yes, educate yourselves before the vote. Don’t just believe everything you hear.
