Squatters who have taken over Davis Park and the nearby snow dump in Anchorage had weeks of warning that the park was being taken back over by the city, and encampments would be abated. On the day that abatement started, Tuesday, the vagrants began torching it, with multiple fires, in protest.

Anchorage Fire Department said there are “multiple fires through the Davis Park Area. Stay clear of Mountain View Drive while your firefighters continue to work. Orange flames shot high into the trees on what is an area that is prone to wildfires that could endanger lives in urban Anchorage.

We have video sent by a source and will update the story as more information becomes available:

Mayor Suzanne LaFrance has, apparently, lost control of the criminal vagrant population in Anchorage, something she ran on when she filed for office, after having criticized former Mayor Dave Bronson for his “incompetence.” The radical left who support her will not likely hold her accountable as Anchorage heads into the high fire danger season. The Davis Park area has been dubbed by Must Read Alaska readers as SLAZ, the Suzanne LaFrance Autonomous Zone, a lawless place where criminals and druggies rule.

Meanwhile, three Assembly members have filed an ordinance to prohibit the squatting on public land.

    • Maybe there may be no place to be homeless. Do you agree with that? I have been homeless and lived out of my car for about a year. I was never addicted to drugs but drank everyday. I just needed a place to park and not be bothered. It was Ruth arcand park off Abbot for several months.

  1. Am I the only one wondering why they are not in jail for destruction of public property and endangerment of lives???

    • The police should initiate and strategy to bust drug dealers that subject the homeless/vulnerable. That would be a good start.

  2. Simply confirms my belief that the homeless are all criminals.

Yes, you are a criminal if you are squatting on any property that you do not own. 50 years ago that would have been a ruthless opinion. However, today there are dozens of programs yearning to help. These people refuse help and instead choose a life of crime and squalor.

    • They want to be drunks. The reason they will not accept help,is that requires them to be sober and begin to be responsible for themselves and then to society as a whole.
Time for some tough love. If they will not accept the rules of a civilized society the enabling and funding should end. I don’t expect much, clean up after yourself, don’t crap on the street, don’t pass out on the sidewalk and don’t ask strangers for money. As you said, there are programs and organizations who will help them, those people know that addiction is the main issue to deal with, after that all, else can be addressed, clean clothes, job training, low skill jobs to start regaining some sense of self worth and confidence. But first, sobriety. The societal expectation they are not willing to comply with. It is difficult to help someone committing slow motion suicide.

  3. Fires in a illegal homeless camp, how can that happen? Didn’t our Assembly recently pass an ordinance making public fires ilegal? Undoubtedly LaFrance and her clown show will get to the bottom of this and give the perpetrators a new supply of matches.

    • ZERO TOLERANCE.
      Police dogs and night sticks.
Pummel this miscreant criminal class into submission.
This is disgusting that we have a class of people exempt from trespassing, vagrancy, loitering, littering, public urination and excrementation, assault, and rape.
Zero Tolerance – lock this scum up!
      MAGA.

  4. I would be willing to donate the Park Strip in downtown Los Anchorage for a new homeless campground.

There are very few trees in the area with lots of alcohol beverage supply to medicate the patients and the ASSembly can keep a close eye on their clients from their barstools at Mad Myrnas.

The parkstrip is not worth anything else as it is too close to the downtown zero safety zone that few people find it attractive.

    • You’ve got to be joking!!Brainless idea…Your suggestion is a complete destruction of Anchorage and burning up Anchorage…Where did you come up with this ding-bat decision..You seem to want to completely destroy Anchorage..Anchorage has MANY activities to enjoy on that Park Strip.

      • A little too early for sarcasm?
It’s not me that wants to completely destroy Anchorage.

That was already being done by the leftist fools who came up with the “ding-bat” decision to elect an incompetent Assembly chairperson who couldn’t even conduct an Assembly meeting without looking to her idol the “angry Chris Constant” for “what to do next” at every single meeting when someone in the audience questioned their ignorant policies during the forced closures on business owners during the Wuhan farce without tax relief.
The federal funding for that was fast track spent on foolishness by the fake unelected Assembly appointed mayor

LaFrance’s first order of business was to participate and join the “Queers for Palestine March” immediately after being sworn in.
That was precisely the moment I realized Anchorage was on a fast track to Hell.

You might want to wake up and smell the coffee before it gets burned too.

Before you defend the parkstrip you may want to take a moment to think about the Mountain View taxpayers who are paying a huge sum of cash to the city who sits idling and sleeping (Perez-Verdia) in their Assembly chairs collecting a large honorarium while their homeless empire they have built with 160 million of tax dollars burn their neighborhood Davis Park to the ground.

I welcome your ideas of salvaging whats left of Anchorage but not expecting anything of value.

  5. LaFrance didn’t lose control. She never had control and has done nothing to indicate she wanted control. She’s not the right person to control inappropriate behavior among adults… history would indicate that that takes a white heterosexual male and Anchorage didn’t elect one of those.

  6. Setting fires as a protest? Arson is a crime, is it not? These bums who set the fires need a hickory shampoo, followed by a set of chrome bracelets and a long ride to be booked for felony arson. Expect the ACLU and our Assembly to rush in soon to protect these bums’ first amendment rights for this mostly peaceful protest.

    • AS 11.46.400. Arson in the First Degree.
      (a) A person commits the crime of arson in the first degree if the person intentionally damages any property by starting a fire or causing an explosion and by that act recklessly places another person in danger of serious physical injury. For purposes of this section, “another person” includes but is not limited to fire and police service personnel or other public employees who respond to emergencies, regardless of rank, functions, or duties being performed.
      (b) Arson in the first degree is a class A felony.

  7. Set up a Squatterville next to the Anchorage Dump. Free food, household goods, wood and burn barrels. A Squatters Paradise. For Anchorage Citizens, no Fecal-Urinated streets, no panhandlers, no passed out people, laying around, no explicit sexual activity. The can have their world, and we can have ours. Non Profits can keep them supplied with Booze, Weed, and Tobacco. They would have no reason to leave. On Saturday Night they can mosey over to Ekutna and beg at the New Casino.

  8. These folks should go live a Lafrances home right on her lot.
She could offer bathroom services and feed the dudes as well out her back boor.
Get the rest of her buddy fairies over to help out.
They could all gather round the campfire and sing “Tiptoe thought Two lips…”
Some-Mores work well at these events

  9. Mayor Suzanne LaFrance has, apparently, lost control of the criminal vagrant population in Anchorage, something she ran on when she filed for office. What? She lied? NO WAY!!

  10. The homeless squatters are Democrat at heart. Take something that isn’t theirs without doing the work to build their own lives and when someone who rightfully takes it back, they seek to destroy it rather than give it back to whom it belongs.

Word of advice, defy your local Democrat. Don’t give an inch or else they literally will take a mile.

  11. Jail serves us three squares, with full service, and a cot. LaFrance serves us a campground and a warming fire, but no food. Jail sounds good. But thanks, LaFrance, for your consideration and temporary quarters.

  12. The Davis Park camps were there when Bronson was Mayor. Criticizing LaFrance for cleaning up a mess left by Bronson is a fine piece of journalism lol.

    • The problem was and is the Anchorage Assembly. The navigation center was going to be built right next to Police headquarters and the Native Hospital. Bronson got in the way of Zalatel’s conflict of interest.
LaFrance has cleaned up diddly squat and has exacerbated the “homeless crisis”, effectively enabling and enboldening the addicts and alcoholics not willing to conform to civilized society.
      Fixed your lies. You welcome.

    • La France and her ilk killed Bronsons transition center plan. You know the one you harped endlessly about being a “ tent in the woods”. Bronson had a plan. La France clearly has nothing. Don’t try to save face here Frank.

    • And… as Assembly Chair, LaFrance did… what exactly to help Bronson clean up the homeless mess?
Also, I seem to remember that camp there before Bronson was sworn in, but I could be wrong.

    • When I lived on Mumford Street in 1995, the woods behind the portion of Viking Drive that has since been vacated, the Commercial Drive snow dump and Tyson Elementary were teeming with camps. Did you have a point besides demonizing Dave Bronson? I see folks took your bait anyway, as they always do. Not only am I tired of hearing about the Bronson navigation center proposal, as I’ve thoroughly debunked it, but it shows the collective lack of memory of news consumers. The myth that the homeless problem in Anchorage is a recent thing contributed greatly to Bronson’s reelection defeat. Some of you claim to be Bronson supporters and yet you gladly perpetuate this myth? Try learning your history, it’s not that extensive.

  13. This is why you don’t let weak leftist (men or women, well they are the same thing really) into positions of leadership. They are jealous of those who have power in their lifes. Weak women think that strong men are some glass ceiling they have to break in order to get ahead in life. They must break something or another so they are give some kind of purpose of “building back better”.
Lafrance showed she is a full fledged coward when it came to the covid response by slingshotting her dust mask back into place after every drink of water. Weak minded, weak bodied, weak willed loser. Just like Constant.

We need leaders who work through strength and actual love for all people, not just their selected few. Those who call themselves leaders or servants to attempt to use fear or are beholden to fear will only lead their follower lemmings over the cliff.

But maybe we should just let the leftist Democrats destroy the city. They would have no body to blame but themselves at this point and maybe finally they would see the light that their methods were severely flawed. Then we can all laugh at them as they bow their pathetic heads in shame. Once we are done laughing, the strong among us shall rebuild something so great that all the weaklings will be left in awe, and in the dust.

Please vote for me, Lafrance for mayor.

  15. But but but I thought citations would be issued for iegal fires! You know, the wildfire thing?

    That was soooooo March.

Nah. More of the same from Suzy baby. Nothing.

    So fetch.

  16. After all isn’t this what these leftists are taught, protest vandalize burn and commit crimes when they don’t get their way and when they don’t get what they want even if it’s illegal?

  17. Why haven’t the police arrested the drug dealers? You have to light a fire to get arrested? The Davis park homeless situation would have been only half as bad. Prosecutors are willing to ensure they stay in jail and not released next day. Drugs lead to dependency on EVERYTHING.
The non-homeless- homeless even live like homeless cause they know the police won’t intervene in this underworld.

  18. Yet, when i fire-up the burn-barrel in my back yard, everyone comes unglued because I’m lowering Anchorage’s already poor air quality, and I get a ticket.

    • Of course John.
You have money and the city needs lots more of it to support their “Anchorage Coalition to end Homeless”.
Thats exactly the reason they are burning up the Glenn Hwy scavenging ticket revenue from valley commuters.

  19. It seems there are a lot of people in Anchorage who think alike, and I agree with you all!

    Vote Right Wing Everything.

How do we get out of this stranglehold the Assembly has on the city?

  20. The police department has a role to play in the homeless epidemic. I like chief Case, but he is also a politician. BUST THE DRUG DEALERS/PUSHERS!!!!! The citizens have spoken. GET RID OF THE F////// DRUGS!!!!
