A man with a long history of trouble with the law is being sought by Alaska State Troopers in connection with the shooting of a trooper at about 1 pm in Anchor Point on the Kenai Peninsula.

Troopers seek 60-year-old Bret Herrick, while the trooper was taken to South Peninsula Hospital, where his condition has not been released.

The trooper was shot behind the Warehouse Store in and Alaska State Troopers are active in the area, searching for Herrick, who is considered armed and dangerous.

Herrick was charged in 2012 for kidnapping and robbery, but was released on a plea deal that his attorneys made with in 2013. He only served about five months.

Update: Herrick was last seen wearing work boots, dark pants, knee-length leather trench coat, black t-shirt, and a black do-rag on his head. Herrick is 5’10”, 200 pounds bald, and has brown eyes. He is bald.

Troopers are asking drivers to not pick up hitchhikers in the Anchor Point area.

The trooper who was shot has been medevaced to an Anchorage area hospital for additional medical treatment. The trooper is in fair condition.

  1. Also, to the LE working to catch this animal, please try to see that he does not become a drain to us tax payers. Thank you.

  2. “But he was released on a plea deal that his attorneys made……”. The reason many dislike and do not respect attorneys.

    • 15 entries on CourtView. He’s a big fan of domestic violence that just can’t get a fair deal. Everybody’s out to get him and the bugs, sheesh. The bugs are on his face all the time. Scraped off his eyebrows trying to clear ’em out but they just start drilling in another spot. Gotta remember to cut and file them fingernails before getting plugged again.

Oh, and uh, Mr. Johnson tossed in the towel long ago. A couple decades of ten hour spank sessions and you can say c’est la vie to ole limpy. Can’t say he doesn’t have a reason for being cranky though, eh?

  3. There was a time when a kidnapping conviction was rewarded with the death penalty. Five months served? Really? I hope the judge can provide a good excuse to the Trooper’s family as to why this kidnapper was let go. After. Five. Months.

    • That is good question. The prison sentences are very lopsided.
It seems the worst ones get the lighter sentences. He should have gotten life without parole.

  4. Our state’s prosecuting attorneys and judges (in hushed conference): “Dang it. Prosecuting and sentencing kidnappers and robbers is SO MUCH TROUBLE. Sheesh, this guy was supposed to go straight. But now that he has gone out and shot a Trooper we’ll have to actually do some real work.”

And what’s the matter with our state legislators, who will not require convictions for the crimes committed? “It is terrible to contemplate how few politicians are hanged.” – G. K. Chesterton

    • What was it our prior local judge said to the ‘choke and spank’ FAA guy? Something like “looks like you get a free pass”?

I completely agree. The criminal justice system should exist for the protection of those of us that aren’t under its direct scrutiny.
