Republicans inch closer to securing U.S. House majority

Republicans this weekend moved closer to securing a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, which would give the GOP a trifecta in the federal government and a smoother path to adopting key legislative priorities.

As of Sunday, Republicans have won 216 House seats to Democrats’ 209, with 10 races still undecided. Republicans need to win at least two of those remaining 10 races to get to or surpass the 218 needed for a majority.

According to The Hill, Democrats lead in two of those remaining 10 races while Republicans lead in the other eight.

Republicans already hold a majority in the U.S. Senate with 53 seats secured to Democrats’ 46. In the one remaining Senate race yet to be called, Democrat Ruben Gallego leads Republican Kari Lake in Arizona.

And, of course, Republican Donald Trump won the White House and is now president-elect. Trump completed a sweep of the seven key swing states Saturday night when he was declared the winner of Arizona, as The Center Square previously reported. Trump also won in battlegrounds North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Nevada.

The Arizona win lifted Trump’s Electoral College vote count to 312, well surpassing the 270 needed to win the presidency. Vice President Kamala Harris took 226 electoral votes.

U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson imbued confidence in a post on X Friday.

“The American people have spoken and given us a mandate. We will be prepared to deliver on day one,” Johnson, who is seeking to reclaim his speakership roll when new House members are sworn in in January, wrote. “With Republicans in control, we will secure the border, grow our economy, restore American energy dominance, and end the radical woke agenda. America’s best days are ahead of us.”

  1. It may not matter unless they can all get on the same page like the Democrats do. All in fighting and power-hungry politicians things will get done like they need to get done.

      • I am saying the republicans will have a hard time seeing what the people are looking for verses what they will do for the power.
Take our lovely Lisa she won’t vote to go after the Democrats and what they’ve done to this country.

  2. We actually have 217 seats now . The CO House 8 was flipped from blue to red. Evans beat Caraveo. She conceded yesterday.

  3. The Trump win is fantastic. In theory, with senate and house in GOP control, his agenda and critical appointments could be approved rapidly.

But the GOP is dominated by Neo Cons who oppose disrupting the current corrupt system.

If Thune or Corbyn, both are McConnell protegès groomed specifically for this purpose, are put in senate leadership on a secret ballot, it will be a repeat of GOP obstruction as his last term.

Everyone who actually cares for the future of our country need to call Sullivan’s office today, blow up his phone line, and demand he votes for senator Scott.

  4. Looks like there is a effort to steal the PA senate seat that flipped.

  5. It is beyond ridiculous that the state of Alaska has not counted all the votes yet.

All ballots ought to be in by election day and counted within 24 hours.

I know its AK, i.e. distance. Figure it out earlier if you have to send a ballot in.

  6. With Republicans in control of thw White House, the US House, and the Senate I expect them to get the deficit spending under control. We’re paying one TRILLION dollars per year in interest on our $35 trillion dollar debt.

Will Repulicans do the right thing? Will they actually act like Republicans, or will they be a cluster?

Republicans will not be able to blame deficits on Democrats. They better not screw us.

  7. Trump learned his first go-around. I bet he’ll make wiser choices for his cabinet and get a majority that’s NOT going to sabotage his every move. If they can all work together, the “deep state” may begin its decline.

  8. I hope the Republicans don’t mess things up. I recall years ago an arrogant Newt Gingrich talking about taking babies from single women that ruined the Republican majority and setting the Republican party back for decades.

  9. I know there won’t be time what with trying to get into the corpus of the permanent fund. But I wish the legislature would work on getting the election tightened up. With RCV going away, fingers crossed, we need to get our vote counting done on election day. Only count votes that arrive by election day not postmarked then.
