Recall signature gatherers are closing in on Assembly Chairman Felix Rivera

Signature gatherers are making one final push this weekend to complete the signatures they need to recall Anchorage Assembly member Felix Rivera.

At a drive-through event at the LaMex restaurant on Friday, they picked up a steady stream of signatures from local residents. The group Reclaim Midtown will be out on Saturday at Tudor Bingo, from noon-3 pm. The address is 1436 E. Tudor Road.

On Sunday, a drive-through signing event will be at the Golden Lion Hotel on 1000 East 36th Avenue (New Seward Highway), in midtown. That is the hotel the Anchorage Assembly purchased for the someday-use as a controversial drug rehabilitation center. The time to sign is after church between 1-4 pm.

Signature gatherers are also in other locations, plus at least 10 people are walking door to door this weekend to collect signatures.

Rivera represents Assembly District 4. Only those registered to vote in that district are qualified to sign the recall petition, which must have at least 2,735 qualified signatures by Jan. 5, when the petition must be turned into the Municipal Clerk’s Office, which will verify the signatures.

That number represents 25 percent of the votes cast in the April 7, 2020 election for the seat.

The signers must live within the outlines of this map:

Rivera has started a defense fund to campaign on his behalf, if the recall petition is approved for the April 6 ballot. He is planning to fight it in court.

  1. If Rivera is truly representing his constituents, why does he need to fight the recall in court as he could easily make it through the recall vote. Since he wants to fight this in court rather than the ballot box I would have to assume that Rivera knows that he has not represented his constituents and will be voted out.

    • Excellent point, AKVoter!
      .
But since the hypocrisy and arrogance of radical leftists knows no bounds, I have no doubt that the execrable Felix Rivera will fight this recall movement by any and all means possible, no matter how dirty or underhanded. Put literally NOTHING past people like him!

  2. I hope the petition sponsors are wise enough to collect a significantly larger number of signatures than required to account for the many that do not live in the district that have signed.

    • Thats just not being honest from any resident signing a petition not available for them. People need to be honest like me! If someone approached me to sign a Recall Quinn Davidson, Peterson, or LaFrance petition, i tell them you have to excuse me I dont reside within their districts.

    • Or for the ones that the clerk throws out just to make it fail, the clerk’s office has thrown up obstacals from day one.

    • I have to admit that I signed the petition and I don’t live in Rivera’s district. The petition was available outside my neighborhood grocery store and I signed out of an abundance of enthusiasm for the cause. It was only when I was inside shopping that I realized I have a moral imperative, but no legal right to petition for Rivera’s recall. When I left the store I spoke with the man gathering the signatures and told him that I shouldn’t have signed, but was told that would all be sorted when the signatures are verified. So, yes, JMark, more signatures than required should be gathered. And, no, Jen, I was not being dishonest. The signature gatherer didn’t ask me where I lived, only if I was registered to vote and did I want to sign the petition to recall Rivera. My guess is that there are plenty of honest people who signed without realizing they weren’t qualified to do so.

  3. There would be plenty of more recalls of the liberal Anchorage Assembly members if the Municipal Clerk and Municipal Attorney weren’t busy doing everything they can to deny them. They could probably use a couple of recall petitions themselves…

  4. Instead of, or in addition to, this recall effort against one municipal ass-embly member for pushing and enforcing autocratic and destructive policies, I have a better idea:
    .
    DEFUND THE MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY!
    .
If even a modest percentage of Anchorage-area residents started to refuse to pay their property taxes, our out-of-control and dictatorial municipal government would be brought to its knees, and we would almost see some significant changes for the better. What say you, Anchorage property owners? United we win!

  5. I was infuriated to see a video in which Felix as chairman of the assembly cut off Jamie Allard mid-sentence at a recent assembly meeting. Jamie represents district 2-Eagle River/Chugiak. Rivera refused to allow her to finish her statement simply because he didn’t agree with her. He has a rude and condescending attitude and obviously couldnt care less if her constituents are represented in the assembly or not.

It’s as if Rivera is channeling US representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. OAC recently stated regarding the runoff election for two Georgia Senate seats that the Democrats need to win the seats so “we don’t have to work with Republicans”. I believe most common sense Americans recognize the need for compromise in this increasingly partisan political environment. We don’t need this type of arrogance in the Anchorage assembly. We must come together for what is in the best interest of our city as a whole.

I signed the petition for recall of Felix Rivera and encourage my fellow district 4 residents to do the same.
