Peltola ordered back to work as Democrats must show up for roll call vote on House Speaker next week

Rep. Mary Peltola is being ordered back to work by her Democrat caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives, where she will be required to vote for Rep. Hakeem Jeffries for House Speaker.

Peltola has been missing from work for nearly a month, after the tragic death of her husband, Gene Peltola, in September.

An email went out from House Democratic Whip Minority Whip Katherine Clark of Massachusetts, saying, “Each member of our Caucus must be physically present on the Floor for next week’s proceedings. Many of you have made tremendous sacrifices to continue to be in Washington, and these have not gone unnoticed. We understand that the uncertainty of this schedule is challenging. Any change to this expected timing will be communicated as soon as we receive it.”

Peltola has already voted for radical Rep. Jeffries of Queens, New York numerous times in January, when the House was trying to elect a new speaker. It’s certain she will again, as the House struggles for direction subsequent to the removal of Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy as speaker last week by eight Freedom Caucus Republicans who joined with all Democrats who were present and voting. Peltola was not present for the vote to remove McCarthy.

Rep. Clark thanked House Democrats for sticking together in unity and asked them to remain united next week. On Tuesday evening, the Democrat caucus will have an organizational meeting to nominate Jeffries.

Meanwhile, on the Republican side, both Rep. Steve Scalise and Rep. Jim Jordan have thrown their names in the ring for Speaker. Former President Donald Trump has endorsed Jordan, the leader of the Freedom Caucus. Scalise, of Louisiana, is the current House Majority Leader, making him the No. 2-ranking House Republican. He was shot and gravely wounded in an attempted assassination in 2017 by a Democrat with hatred of Republicans. After a long, slow recovery, Scalise was recently diagnosed with a form of blood cancer known as multiple myeloma and is going through aggressive treatment, which he says is going well.

  1. Why? There’s no guarantee she’ll show up if she’s there.

The Democrats have votes to spare. It’s the alleged Republicans who have to count votes.

Considering the clown show in DC, won’t be surprised if a Democrat wins Speaker.

    • “Republicans who have to count votes”? The Republican rule to vacate with only one vote, proves in and of itself, they’re too lazy to count, like they’re too lazy to govern.

    • Thankfully the Speaker must win with an actual majority of votes, not just a plurality, so the only way we would end up with a Democrat as Speaker is if some Republicans vote for him.

      • Would you bet your home on that?
The GOP has an inglorious record of caving to the left.

Gaetz made a point of starting this mess with the support of the Democrats.

        • Bet on what? I made no prediction of the outcome; I only outlined the system in place, which is that the Speaker must be elected by an absolute majority. In such a system, and given the current composition of the House, it would be impossible for a Democrat to be elected Speaker without some votes from Republicans (or some Republicans not voting at all).

  2. Well now the voting process can easily be diverted by children pulling the fire alarm without any consequences.
They can all take turns as the children in preschool.
Maybe they should just change the rules to “Speaker for a week” so they all get a turn at musical chairs with the monkey chasing the weasel.
Thats WHY they NEED Mary for the Mary go round.
When they get bored they can send them over to Joey’s place and play “Find the stash” or lets make more Rainbow Flags to hang for the Drag Queen Fall Festival until Joey’s dog bites them all in the A**.
    Its Medication time.

  3. As a surrogate for purported disdain for members of a political party that seem to be more cohesive in their duty to the American public, I suppose the angle of considering ‘disobedience’ is interesting.

      • Perhaps if you had a bong and took a hit of acid it might make sense. I tried a bottle or Aurora Gin and got nowhere

        • “As a surrogate” i.e. as a substitute, “for purported disdain” i.e. alleged contempt, “for members of a political party that seem to be more cohesive in their duty to the American public e.g. members of some political party seem more ‘with it’ in their duty to voters, tax-payers and citizens, I suppose … , “angle” i.e. presented from a particular stance, “considering” i.e. pondering, ” ‘disobedience’ ” what is … “failure or refusal to obey rules or someone in authority” i.e. bow down, “is interesting “, not really, but there it is. Reading emails is so tricky because folks think the written text in the short email conveys the whole meaningful statement including the raised eyebrows, etc. However, folks don’t bother to read long emails, so it’s best to just assume the best unless there’s personal reference that it could be snark.

My guess is that most folks reading the email message would not get the impression the sender was specifically castigating Ms Peltola, nor Mr Scalise or anyone else.

  4. No disrespect towards Peltola but, it’s time for her to go back to work!!!
Nobody would have questioned her taking an extended time off for the death of her husband, if she had not been absent so much at her job prior to his passing. She has the mentality of a spoiled teenager.

  5. Exactly, one thing that shouldn’t be missed in this conversation is that the OPM rule on bereavement leave is 13 days per year. Period.
She has missed more than half the votes in the July to September time frame, over a hundred missed votes. Her husband died on September 13, she shoud have been back by the end of September at the latest.
She will never vote for the good of the state but she is being paid to do the job.

  6. The problem with showing up and voting is that she would then have to answer for her votes if somebody were to challenge her on them. Just sayin’.

  7. I truly believe that the majority of her constituents are NOT democrats. If we can take the time to offer comments here, we can take the time to give our comments directly to her. I’ve taken the time to write her, as pointless as it might be, but she needs to hear from Alaskans, not Hakeem Jeffries!

  8. Peltola’s manipulative chief “Anton” will do everything he can to force Peltola from her Bethel family and back to DC.

    • Peltola needs to resign from that position because she is not dedicated enough to show up consistently and do her job OR listen to her constituents.

  9. Llama Llama life goes on even after death while Alaska US representative was out of the loop during Democrats plotting and ousting Speaker Mccarthy, which I’m not surprised he couldn’t control the cantankerous House. I wouldn’t trust the next speaker though cause how much worse will he be what deals will he had to had made prior for Democrat votes

  10. Stand by for the next critically important piece of legislation to get sponsored in Congress: 90 days mandatory paid “Grievance” leave for all federal employees – hired or elected. Mental health, to be with the family, because it’s a human right…pick your favorite made up justification.

  11. You can hate him or love him but only one person has the guts to take on the Democrats and the Peltola machine. The irony is its Begich.
