The Municipality of Anchorage saw a total of eight protests, demonstrations, and rallies last week tied to the presidential summit, according to the Anchorage Police Department. Most gatherings, ranging in size from about 10 to 400 participants, remained peaceful.

Anchorage police deployed extra patrols throughout the city on Aug. 15 to provide public safety during the high-profile visit. Officers made one arrest, linked to vandalism at the entrance to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

Police said James Garrett Hermansen, 31, was taken into custody after spray-painting an obscenity directed at President Donald Trump on a JBER gate sign near Government Hill, where a demonstration organized by radical activist Ivan Hodes was underway. Hermansen has been charged with third-degree criminal mischief and was being held at the Anchorage Correctional Center as of Tuesday morning.

“APD is detaining me for graffiti,” Hermansen wrote on his Facebook page on Friday. Former senior assistant attorney general for Alaska posted a photograph of the vandalism on her social media page, joking that Alaska had rolled out the “red carpet” for Trump.

According to police, officers assigned to monitor the gate witnessed Hermansen spray-painting the sign in red paint before taking him into custody.

“We had extra officers working to keep the public safe and to be close by if anyone needed us,” said APD Chief Sean Case. “Overall, we are grateful to everyone who peacefully exercised their right to free speech.”

  1. Imagine (D)emocrats and communists who hate Trump so much that they’d rather war continue in Ukraine until another President or world leader can make peace later. After more senseless deaths. Imagine (D)ems so brain-addled by their Trump Derangement Syndrome that they feel the must deface an Air Force Base sign? Imagine then whining because you were caught. But a former senior assistant AG? Hoping she didn’t screech, “I’m an AG! I’m an AG! I’m an AG!” Here’s also hoping she has zero future job prospects in any AG office on this planet. Oh, and a pointer, defacing an Air Force facility sign is also a federal crime. C’mon, let’s double-dip this dipstick’s charges. It’s a two-for.

  2. I have to wonder how he has access to his phone to post comments while in custody.
Now, just give him his pink jumpsuit and a scrub brush and let him clean it. Then release him.
It’s not cruel or unusual or excessive. SOMEONE is going to have to clean it. So no one can complain or post on FB how disproportionate the punishment is.
And since it’s already cleaned up, I might have seem other places that need his attention here in our fair city. The pink color is for his safety, of course.

  3. “…….“APD is detaining me for graffiti,” Hermansen wrote on his Facebook page……..”
I hope you are ‘detained’ for as long as legally possible, legally prosecuted, and that the judge includes the community service in your sentence that mandates the cleanup of ten spray painted graffiti displays on public property. Too bad by that time the Air Force will have to clean up YOUR vile “art”……..that the taxpayer will pay to accomplish.
    What a POS…………..

  4. His facebook website shows all these people giving him congrats. Make sure you leave a message about how you feel. These people really need the book thrown at them and change this attitude that vandalism in any form is good

  5. “organized by radical activist Ivan Hodes”

Well, that explains why he laughs at my comments and never has anything substantive to say.

Also glad they busted this 31-year-old juvenile delinquent.

  6. I always enjoy the creative wording in Liberal graffiti. Take this one, Trump preceded by a simple one syllable profanity. That about sums up the intelligence here. Notice also how they had to change “No Oligarchs” to “No Kings.” Oligarchs has too many syllables and is difficult to spell.

  7. It says a lot about his character that he is so dismissive about being arrested for committing a crime. Just imagine what Anchorage would look like if we consistently held people who destroy public or the private property of others accountable.

  8. As I drove up the Glen on the way home, the Boniface overpass is was lined with communist tools waving their banners. One the one that stuck out most was “Alaska is not a fascist state!”. As I was got closer, I laid into the horn to get their attention and stuck my left arm out and give them the single finger salute.

  9. Hey Hermansen you’re just a common criminal. Not a good idea to vandalize anything particularly a DOD owned sign. The idea of protesting a president that is trying to stop a war is scummy at best. Just a look at your picture proves my point. Your scum.

  10. “According to police, officers assigned to monitor the gate witnessed Hermansen spray-painting the sign in red paint before taking him into custody.” Well at least the APD allowed him completely finish the vandalism before doing anything.

  11. Graffiti is one thing defacing property and that it is Federal property is completely another thing. Should press federal charges on this person.

  12. his FB page is just what you would expect from a low IQ liberal! The fool went to the Alaska Military Youth Academy & did not learn anything about respect or accountability!

  13. And the J6’ers who defaced the Capitol building have been pardoned by Trump. Talk about a double standard. Shameful and scandalous.

  14. The base should order a new replacement sign be made. Then, send the “disturbed” culprit the bill. And if he’s unable to pay the bill. Then a judge needs to sentence him to serve time in prison, while also working to earn the money to complete the payment. Only after then, should he be released from prison.

Society needs to stop tolerating lawless people.

  15. Originally from where? In fact, would be interesting to know all the protesters home and when they relocated. My initial response to anyone new coming here is, “please leave”. Just done with the influx of rude, poor quality, sexually devient, drug addicted, entitled, welfare seekers, green communists. Don’t like how you think, drive, vote, interact, negatively impact the future of this state. This goes for some of the 3rd world communities, the ones who import 25 family members who don’t speak English, and for example kill entire local populations of birds, raid chaga on private land, over harvest any resources, kill bears just for certain organs….to these I say America is America. Its NOT a place where you bring your dysfunctional trash cultural behavior. You shed it and conform to ours. Or, leave please. I watched Anchorage turn to crap, I’ve seen everything I have listed first hand in increasing amounts and my patience and accommodating attitude are gone. I am no longer the welcoming Alaskan happy to see new faces. The new faces are ugly and destructive to this once wonderful place. Thats what was representative of this protest and the bigger issue facing Alaska. Rant over. Now watch, the guy was born here….changes nothing about the things I shared if so.

  16. ‘demonstration organized by radical activist Ivan Hodes’. This man works with children. What could go wrong?
