On Friday, July 17, Matt Shultz announced his exit from the race for Alaska’s seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Shultz, who pastors the First Presbyterian Church in Anchorage, cited “lack of meaningful support from Democratic institutions” for his campaign and instead endorses left-leaning independent Bill Hill.
Although Shultz claimed Alaskans widely “share the same values,” he drew criticism from Alaskan conservatives for his left-wing activism and lack of biblical integrity as a pastor. According to Shultz, he had entered the race because “I believe public service is a moral calling.” However, “defeating Nick Begich and restoring a Democratic House majority must come before any one candidate.” He also expressed “disappointment” in “meddling” by Republican groups.
He then endorsed Bill Hill. Despite Hill’s running as an independent, Shultz considers the candidate’s politics close enough to the Democrat platform to look to him for “restoring a Democratic House majority.”
