Thousands of customers in Anchorage are still without power on Monday morning, after a windstorm blew through the region over the weekend, crashing trees into power lines, flipping small planes on tarmacs, and peeling off shingles of roofs.

Schools are closed in Anchorage today, due to the power situation and the slippery roads. Chugach Electric Association crews are working to restore power.

At 5:55 a.m., Chugach Electric Association gave an update:

“Currently there are about 5,200 customers without power. Crews continued to tackle outages overnight and more crews will be available again this morning after coming off of rest.

“We have most customers back in Cooper Landing except for those requiring 3-phase power. One phase is unavailable due to wire crossing over water. Crews will re-evaluate with daylight.

“Crews are still working on restoration in Indian and Hope.

“We recognize some members have been without power for many hours. Our crews will continue to work as safely and quickly as they can until all are restored.”

On Sunday, at least a dozen jets, including commercial flights and freighters, were diverted to the Fairbanks International Airport.

Early Sunday morning, the roof of a pedestrian overpass on the Seward Highway was blown off and debris was scattered across both north and southbound lanes.

  1. Lost power at 3am Sunday morning but it was restored by 9am in the western portions of Wasilla. A couple of flickers since but power has remained. Surprised it didn’t go out sooner or longer with the sort of wind we were seeing. I am still a promoter of underground utilities as I’m sure more of the power losses come from line whip and tree incursion.

  2. And if you are a thoroughly brainwashed wacko, having been educated in public schools, and a heavy pot smoker, these destructive winds are a product from the tailpipe of GM, Ford, and Chrysler vehicles……. especially those big redneck pickups trucks. Not so much the Subaru and Honda Democrat cars.

    • Naomi,
Listen up sweets, lots of us Patriot, Constitution loving ” knuckle dragging rednecks” own Subaru’s and Honda Cars.
      Why? A thing called value.
Oh and when the power goes out, we fire up our Kubota generator.
      I hope this helps!

  3. After the 2018 quake we gave serious thought to a generator and got one to power the whole house in 2021. The big wind storm here in Palmer(2022) we were the only ones with power in our neighborhood. This last storm was not too bad and we never lost power.

  4. Surely these unfortunate events are the result of the evil DEI initiatives at the power companies, their deplorable managers, the incompetent Mayor and Governor, and the slackers trying to make repairs.

OR MAYBE IT WAS JUST A WINDSTORM SO POWERFUL THAT NO ONE COULD HAVE PREVENTED THE DAMAGE, just like the California fires.

There used to be a time when Americans came together in the face of adversity. No longer. Now, catastrophes are nothing more than opportunities to own the Libs, to spread disinformation, to cast blame, and to further divide people – all for the sake of eyeballs, clicks, notoriety, and profit.

And the recent MRAK coverage of the LA fires is prime example of just that.

  5. Seems to me that the electric infrastructure is very old and in need of repair/maintenance. What is chugach doing to address this? I have a friend who lives on the lower hillside, no power no water for over 24 hours. Chugach needs to call in help from other areas of the state. They obviously can’t handle the situation. They need to be investigated.
