Video: Come with us as we walk through the Suzanne LaFrance Autonomous Zone (SLAZ)

A vagrant encampment that stretches for many acres across from Davis Park is a lawless wasteland that readers have dubbed SLAZ -- the Suzanne LaFrance Autonomous Zone.

Must Read Alaska walked through several acres of wasteland across from Davis Park, this week. The area is what our readers have dubbed “SLAZ” — the Suzanne LaFrance Autonomous Zone. It is filled with makeshift structures, some of them two-story, and the ground is covered with human waste, stolen bikes, household goods, and other items, and garbage.

Anchorage residents see these encampments all over the city, but this one is especially impressive in size and lawlessness.

SLAZ is a reference to Seattle’s Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ), a lawless zone that was created in 2020 as a protest of the death of drug addict and wife beater George Floyd of Minneapolis.

Take the tour with us by clicking on our YouTube video, and then click on stories below to see more multi-media coverage of the vagrant-ruled wastelands of Anchorage.

  1. So that’s what all the millions of $$ have gotten us, so sad. Cleaning up one area just moves the problem to another area. Unless our laws for vagrancy, drugs, littering, etc. are enforced this will be a forever rotating and growing problem.

  2. I say we give each of the vagrants a bottle of booze, a few sandwiches, and a free ride to LaFrance’s neighborhood. See how well she likes it.

  3. SLAZ is disgustingly shameful. I don’t understand why the municipal government and the citizens of Anchorage tolerate this. 🤔

  4. Another All-American City in the making. Great tour on video. I thought I was back 130 years in the Gold Rush days, looking at all the scrum who came to Alaska …….not to work and make a living, but to live freely off of everyone else and complain about the weather and lack of booze and drugs. What respectable American mayor allows this on her watch?

  5. Disgusting.
    Crimes witnessed:
    Felony theft.
    Littering.
    Illegal dumping.
    Vagrancy.
    Loitering.
    Trespassing.
Didn’t see public intoxication, assault, rape, panhandling, possession with intent to use – BUT we all know that goes a long with this.
Bronson had a chance – but he implemented the same failed policy they all do – free housing.
Mayor Guilianni fixed it with a ZERO TOLERANCE approach to enforcing the laws against the crimes mentioned above.

  6. Thank you, Ms. Downing, for this revealing and awful reminder that the municipality of ‘Anchorage (LaFrancorage) Is Dying.’ Our own eyes see the daily proofs of the ever-increasing shabbiness of this city. Anchorage’s progressive mayor and assembly are utter failures in this respect, just as we have observed in other major U.S. cities where similar characters are being elected.

The question , “Why, why, why do we urban residents elect these destroyers of urbanity?” The answer to that question is a simple one, and clear. Collectively, we voters have either gone mad (progressivism) or have gone absent.

  7. For those of us who are OLD (not sure what “generation” we are called–I thought baby boomers?) this is kind of unbelievable. It looks like the slums of India pictures we were shown as children. We know the people living like this have some sort of problems like addiction and mental illness but what does this say about the liberal Democrats who somehow accept this? Just because a few institutions treated their clients badly, we shut down ALL mental hospitals? We need to institutionalize more of these people for their safety and ours. I know the former mayor was castigated for his “navigation” center but it is exactly what needs to happen–some way to sort out people and yes, LABEL them if necessary. Stop with the bleeding hearts and actually DO something!

  8. I am truly disgusted. This is NOT the Anchorage I have loved and lived in for over 40 year. Mayor & Asembly please acknowledge that what you are doing IS NOT WORKING! Stop wasting our money . Time to reinvent the Wheel and find true solutions. Allowing this in our city is criminal .
