Robert Seitz: Yes, 90,000 climate scientists can be wrong

By ROBERT SEITZ

In my commentary of April 9, “We don’t need Alaska Climate Change Emergency Response Commission,” I covered that Alaska is not warming at two to four times faster than the rest of the world.

I brought out that the comparisons are made with average annual temperature anomalies which have higher values when compared with the average over long period of time. I stated in that commentary that “If  you look at the data, you will find that while the comparison of average annual temperature reveal larger anomaly values for recent times, but you will also note that the high temperatures (summer temperatures) are not much different than they have been for a long time. It is a climate crisis sleight of hand, because the real change is not greater heat, but a lot less extreme cold.”

The average annual temperatures on the North Slope and in the Interior are still below freezing.

One commenter, who made many comments, was hung up on the official national and international climate reports and quite unwilling to see that the official data interpretation may be flawed. This commentary is directed to Steve and any others who think the UN and IPCC have any goal other than domination of all things environmental, which includes the entire population of earth.

I am not impressed by climate science as they seem miss the truth that science can help us find, and they do that by looking at the data wrongly. I looked at their data and found that Annual Average temperature data that shows a positive anomaly does not mean the summers are hotter, or even that the oceans are hotter. The average summer temperature is not higher; it is the average annual temperature anomaly that is higher. There is a big difference.

Every time I hear or read that the ocean is boiling I go on line to look at current ocean surface temperatures, and have usually found that the current temperatures were somewhere 3-4 degrees below the average for that month. I saw the reports of 100 degrees and higher temperatures and doubted them immediately. Being an expert in oceanographic instrumentation and physical oceanography I know that 100 degrees would be very difficult to attain, even near Florida.

The one computation the Climate Science group provides that makes no sense at all to me is the Average Annual World Temperature. I can think of no practical or meaningful way they can arrive at such a value that could be considered valid.  But, they have a process that produces a result that keeps the masses excited about GHG warming so they stay happy. The rest of us who really apply science and look for real results can see the scam.

I stated previously what made the jet stream deviate from its recent past traditional patterns. Remember the Little Ice Age which brought a lot of cold a few hundred years ago?  Well it warmed up since then from the solar energy the earth received during the intervening years and a lot of ice melted and a lot of the cold went away. It was not warming from greenhouse gases that caused the changes. Tracking the jet stream will provide a lot more understanding of what the weather is around the world than will the running of computer climate models.

Steve, you are correct, weather is not climate, but weather is what we can experience, while climate is something we can analyze. It is the conclusions one makes after the analysis that make the difference. I have lived in Alaska for more than 80 years. I contend that if the weather doesn’t seem much different than in the past, it isn’t much different. I have experienced temperatures near 100 degrees in the Interior of Alaska in the mid 1940s and also in later years.

What I know is that we have less cold than we used to have, but the summers are about the same temperature. We get warmer weather in the summer, in any location when high pressure areas persist for a long period of time. In Alaska and other northern areas high pressure areas in the winter make the area colder. The less cold winters provide that the date of last freeze in the spring is earlier and the first freeze in the fall is later to extend our growing season.

As for the Arctic Sea Ice, I find that the Sea Ice immediately surrounding Alaska has been recovering pretty well since the 2012 low ice year. The Bering Sea and Chukchi Seas seem to be near winter normals and have some ice area retained through the summer for 2023 and 2024. The Beaufort Sea has not had summer ice area recede as far as it did in 2012.   While the Arctic Sea ice is at low level, the sea ice immediately around Alaska has been recovering and is not at its minimum level.

I have used Arctic Sea Ice data from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information for the last five or six years. The announcement that they have decommissioned its snow and ice data products as of Monday took me by surprise. This is one set of data that has details of ice area and ice extent which is very useful for other than climate analysis, but also good for evaluation of the daily and monthly response to the weather. I hope the Alaska delegation will work to get this effort recommissioned.

The Chinook we had this spring is not new and has happened man times over my lifetime. Every time the “Arctic Express” sends cold air and snow to Florida and Louisiana, warm wet air will be sucked up from the North Pacific Ocean into Alaska. These events will have a temporary impact on local weather and will provide an early spring or other similar event.

We Alaskans must get the climate/weather challenge figured out very soon. While there is lots of evidence that greenhouse gas is not actually causing global heating there are enough people around the world who accept this whole heartedly and who are working hard at this time to halt production of all hydrocarbon fuels.

The other side of the argument sees great benefit for agriculture from increased CO2 levels. The increased growing season is seen as a great benefit as well. The unfettered production of hydrocarbon fuels in Alaska will help us fill our treasury, allow development of an actual fiscal plan and remove the pressure on Permanent Fund dividends to be the filler for an unbalanced budget.

With Washington State leading the fight against President Donald Trump and Alaska’s efforts increase energy independence and to help the economy by increased production of hydrocarbon fuels and increased production from metal mines the climate issue is the point about which the lawsuits and arguments will be centered. We need to keep monitoring air, sea and soil temperatures just so we can keep track of what is really happening, but we need to quit monitoring the CO2 and methane that might be released as soil in the Arctic thaws  seasonally or even if some amount of permafrost thaws.

For the foreseeable future Cook Inlet Gas and North Slope gas into Fairbanks should be considered as the best way for a sustainable and resilient power system for the Railbelt. As innovations in energy storage, and wind, Solar, Cook Inlet tidal and geothermal power are worked at we can be secure through winters in Alaska which can still be cold. Our focus needs to be on energy and economy. It is important for all Alaskans to really understand that CO2 and CH4 are not the cause of the end of the world.

It is time to quit pushing so hard to transition to renewable energy at the expense of hydrocarbon energy so that we can keep a good percentage of high inertia power sources in any electrical system.

  1. I’m not the “Steve”
I’m a Steve that believes we need all kinds of energy.
People that use energy live longer, and have a better quality of life.
For Alaskan’s, we need to build the Susitna-Wantana Dams for energy and storage. With Susitna we can develop wind and solar. Then we can make money, have inexpensive energy and live a better quality of life from the LNG and oil we export.

    • The wind and solar doesn’t produce enough for the winter months and destroys the scenery of Alaska with the ugly panels and the windmills that freeze up in the winter..Remember Texas’s experience back a few years ago will tell you that. Our winter weather does not provide us the opporunity like the lower 48 states weather..Our wildlife scenery sells alot more money then energy from the tourist industry. We need the water dams and also the chance of nuclear energy for more energy.

  2. Indeed. At one time, the majority of the western world KNEW that the earth was the center of the universe. They killed people for even thinking that it wasn’t. Almost like the modern left…

  3. Robert Seitz is incorrect. When you have 9 billion people adding heat to the atmosphere you get rising temperatures and lets take Alaska as an example, warmer, receding permafrost, less ocean ice, high temperatures in the ocean causing diminished plankton and a die off of ocean life including the category 5 intelligence dolphins which are in the same category as humans., the change has happened quickly and not over a lengthy time, and the earth is more than 6,000 years old, its 4.5 billion years old, the evidence is overwhelming.

    • Let those who are most afraid of change be the first to make the necessary sacrifice for the betterment of the planets. You can go first, 3rd Gen AK. Right behind you can be Al Gore, the Obamas with their beach front properties, Bernie Sanders with his multiple mansions, all the Davos attendees, etc.

    • Everything you say, except maybe the population number, is very debatable and has no proven basis. The climate hysteria has become cultic group think, a societal contagion, and absolutely not grounded in consistent verifiable science. It all comes down to power and control.

Problems with our oceans are likely far more connected to all the ship loads of filth and trash, including loads of plastics, so many countries are dumping into them.

    • 3rd, I am perfectly willing to accept the premise that a dolphin has an equal level of intelligence to your own. Not to myself, or to most others, but compared to you, definitely.

    • “the evidence is overwhelming” – Yes, I can see by your comments that you are indeed overwhelmed. Much like all the rest of the lemmings following the lead jumper.
Try stepping back, take a deep breath, and view both sides with an open mind. If you have any analytical skills, look at ALL of the data objectively.
I’m willing to bet that if you follow the “Scientific Method” (A method of discovering knowledge about the natural world based in making predictions [hypotheses], testing them empirically, & developing theories that match known data from repeatable physical experimentation.) you’ll discover that that was indeed an acorn that fell from the sky.
One of the keys here is not getting caught up in the current popular trend of reversing the “developing THEORIES that match known DATA” into “developing DATA that match known THEORIES”.

    • 3Gen,
Yours is a third grader’s argument for global climate change. The earth has been cooling for the past billion years. Volcanic activity has mostly subsided, when compared to earlier crust movement and plate shifting. The Earth’s rotational axis shifts over time, thereby affecting the distribution of radiant heat from the sun. The little dent in the atmosphere caused by human activity is inconsequential to the planet’s average surface temperature. And there are many, many dynamic factors that the earth uses to scrub CO2.
You’ve fallen for a hoax perpetuated by quasi scientists in their quest for government money to produce more fake studies. Sleep well !

    • Unquestionably Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble must have caused the last ice age to disappear. The poor glaciers, mammoths, mastodons, giant sloths and saber-toothed cats! Hatred for mankind and worship of nature has existed for a long time, manifested in Hinduism, Jainism, Catharism, Albigensianism, Bogomilsm. It is a product of the demonic, which hates humanity out of sheer pride and jealousy. Refusal to recognize this cosmic war is what fuels the various “sciences”. It is amazing how we “Trust the Science” which told us that Covid came from bats, that the poison vax was effective and safe, that ivermectin and other medicines were useless, and that in the 1970s we were headed for a new ice age. All the little, useless gestures that are made to “save the planet” are sold to us merely as feel-good exercises, to create a warm fuzzy feeling, and to cement the fiction as a non-arguable consensus. The de-population crisis is now upon us, yet we were sold that lies since Malthus in 1798. Over and over and over again the lies are exposed, yet we want to continue towards our own self-destruction. The true fake mantra has not been “Trust the science.” It has been “Trust the liars.” The antidote s not Green Politics, it is “Resist the liars.” I join Mr. Seitz in this fight.

    • A very simplistic analysis.
One does not need to be a climate scientist to see how simplistic your statements are. You state the evidence is overwhelming when in fact, the evidence is insufficient to make any conclusions.
      .
The Earth is 4.5B years old. And we have evidence from a very small percentage of years. Serious climate readings have been going on for… what??? 200 years? And, somehow this is proof of… Nothing if you know anything about science, but if you are an ignoramus relying on headlines and celebrities for your information it seems significant. And, things like Antarctic ice core samples are not sufficiently comprehensive enough to make conclusions.
      .
In fact, most models used to predict the effects of man made climate change have been wrong. Not just a bit off the mark, but outright wrong. While it could be the models were wrong, or the scientists had an agenda, or whatever, the reality is if your input is not valid, your output will be wrong. And, we are using inputs to the models that do not tell the whole story. They do not even summarize the story. At best, they are guesses.

  4. The day we started calling weather “Climate Change” is when the trouble began. We can’t change the weather, the sky, nor the sun. Nor can we stop the over 1500 active volcanoes around the world (including Alaska) spewing great heat and gases on a daily basis. Sorry. If you want to waste your brain on thinking humans can change any of that, go right ahead. Climate Change is a scam and massive waste of energy and time. Weather cannot be altered or changed by us. Period!

  5. It is time to get whom ever is responsible for the daily high altitude chem-trails over the Valley brought out into the open. We need to find out what chemicals are being sprayed and why. We also need to see if Bill Gates is tied into some mysterious seeding project here in Alaska such as he had in Norway and Sweden to shield out the sun’s rays. We need a explanation of why, for many days we always have a high overhead haze in the sky and what sun rays are being reflected and if this reflection has any long-term effect on plants, animals, and humans. Also, are they using microplastics in any of their spraying? Time to come clean on what is happening. So far, I can’t get an answer from any politician.

  6. Yes, 90,000 climate scientists can be wrong, but the odds are heavily against it. I know that climate change may ultimately threaten your state budget and your precious PFD as you mention, but that’s no reason to throw the rest of the world under the bus. Climate change is indeed an inconvenient truth, but it is a truth nonetheless, and I’ll put my money on the 90,000 instead of one lone engineer with a vested interest.

And by the way, as an engineer I’m sure you understand that less cold is the result of more heat, as is higher average temperature. Why you use the less cold assertion to support your point is hard to understand.

    Elvis is dead.
    The Earth is round.
    Man landed on the moon.
HAARP isn’t used to control the weather.
And climate change is real, important, and a threat to mankind.

    • Follow the $$$, Dog, always follow the $$$. When the feds fun those scientists, who do you think gets the grants (current and future)? That’s right, whomever publishes the results the grantors want. And if they do a really good job publishing what the grantors want, they get the next one. The agreement between the 90,000 is entirely based on the agreement to suckle at the public trough a bit more. Cheers –

    • What are you doing on a personal level to combat climate change? Given up all forms of non electric transportation? Given up petroleum based fibers? Perhaps stop using products barged or flown in? Stop buying any product in a plastic container? I’ll bet you’ve done none of these.

    • Your false equivalence to ridiculous conspiracy theories only reveals how dim you are Whidbey.

The sun goes through cycles and is the main cause of the heating of our planet.
There are also other celestial bodies that affect us from afar. The planet has its own weather cycles.

None of which are going to be a threat to us as a whole. Some species will suffer while others will adapt and become stronger. This is not the end of our existence, not by a long shot. However, feel free to pay more in taxes to quell your pathetic fears. Or man up and stop crying about the sky falling.

      Sheesh, what a nancy boy.

    • When a leftist tries to insinuate that someone is denying climate change, or calling it hoax, they are demonstrating their ignorance, and their inability to listen to the other side.
      .
No one denies the Earth’s climate is changing. It has been since the world coalesced into a solid mass, and will continue to change until the Sun goes supernova and obliterates the Earth’s remains.
      .
      What is questionable is:
      1. Human’s contributions to climate change, and
      2. the proposals by the global elites about what needs to be done.
      .
That is the issue were leftists and conservatives disagree. No matter how many taxes we pay, no matter how much “sustainable” energy we create, no matter how much we give up personal vehicles, and live in SMART cities, the climate will continue to change.
      .
Additionally, as of yet, none of the dire predictions have come to fruition. In fact, often the opposite has happened. Arctic ice is still there, and getting larger more years than not. The polar bear numbers are increasing. The Great Barrier reef is thriving once again. For ever glacier receding, there are several advancing.
      .
But… why let that reality enter your mind, when you have the chance to mock, ridicule, and deride people you disagree with.

    • One problem, Dog. How do “scientists” support themselves? There are manufacturers, business owners, bankers, doctors, lawyers, etc. etc. The majority of scientists rely on government grants for their substance. They don’t produce anything or provide any service. I’ll guarantee 90,000 of any group (who depend on outside money) will follow the party line or politically correct narrative. After all, they want to eat too.

  7. Robert Seitz may be a self-proclaimed “expert in oceanographic instrumentation and physical oceanography,” but he is clearly not a climate scientist. It is very unlikely that 90,000 climate scientists are wrong, while Mr. Seitz, an electrical engineer, is right.

    • Did you fall prey to the global psyop called Covid?
The majority of the medical industrial complex, the MSM, the Biden Administration, WHO, UN – all acted as though humanity was at risk.
You don’t think it’s possible “they” are doing the same thing with global warming – I mean climate change?

  8. Mainstream media has suckered the non-thinkers into ANOTHER chicken little scenario, the horrible adn is STILL shouting about Mt. Spurr! Fear-doom-pandemic-etc… When did folks get so “F”ing gullible?

  9. Al Gore had it right as he sits high on his 10,000 sq.ft. mansion.
Yup its getting warmer as he is getting richer telling Democrats what they love to hear.
There is big money in climate forecasting.

  10. Think of all of those young climate scientists who have gone to 4, 6, or 8 years of college to study man-caused climate change and all they got out of it was man-caused fiction. It must feel pretty depressing to later realize that your education and degree is nothing but …..fake.

  11. Not necessarily wrong ,but could be lying their posteriors off. Wrong implies that they’re actually seeking a correct answer. Theyrenot!!they’re just mouthpieces for an agenda an agenda not in the interests of the public, just a few who stand to gain wealth and Power!

  12. I would recommend the book “The Death of Expertise: The Campaign against Established Knowledge and Why it Matters” by Tom Nichols. It helps to explain why in recent years people have come to denigrate and mistrust expertise, and very much to their peril.

    • Whidbey, your hysterical pro-establishment defenses of credentialism make me laugh.

What you and your fellow ignorant radical leftist pro-establishment lemmings refuse to ever acknowledge is that so-called “experts” can be, and often are, just as biased, and just as corrupted, and just as agenda-pushing, as any politician.

How do you live with your profound ignorance and gullibility? Do you still believe in Santa Claus, as well?

    • The experts didn’t need a campaign against them. They committed career suicide in front of us. COVID was the most recent example, and those liars were far more grounded in science than the climatistas are. Cheers –

    • Your Marxist book reference is filled with opportunistic contradiction. It absolutely figures that you would have read this garbage. But again, Marxists will read Marxist crap.

    • Whidbey, you can either get busy living or get busy dying. You wanna live in fear of some bogey man around every shadowy corner? Go right ahead. But for most if us, we don’t live in a constant state of fear. Sorry you are too weak to exist on your own without someone to validate your scaredy cat existence. Go out and touch grass once in a while.

    • Science is the mistrust of expertise. It is the very nature of science to question the established narrative. Anyone who thinks the science is ever settled is stating they know absolutely nothing about science.
      .
And, here you are, recommending a book that explores why people are questioning expertise.
      .
I am not a scientist, but I know enough about it to know questioning the experts is the best possible thing that can happen. Only a dedicated leftists, eager to follow instead of lead, would think otherwise.

  13. Gullible people are desperate to believe man has a long term effect on climate. It validates their belief they are important and vital to the universe to function correctly.

It’s a viral part of their religion.

These people are also delusional and have zero founding in history or reality.

  14. As I recall, “science” believed Covid came from a wet market, the shot worked with no side effects, and that Fauci was their new God.

    “science” discredited itself decades ago.

  15. What is a Climate Scientist? Some person who has sat in academia for the last decade being brainwashed with computer modeling and propaganda. They’ve been told what to say and think and have large student loan balances.

  16. “Climate Science” is an industry that provides a living to a lot of otherwise unemployable people and people too lazy to do something actually worthwhile.

  17. Be sure to measure most temperatures in concrete covered zones, to prove the climate is warming. All that heat reflecting out of those cement roads and buildings will always prove your point, especially when the towns and cities keep expanding. Also disregard the climate cycles, too. Helps the model correspond to where the money is.

  18. Whidbey is correct. Science is self correcting. Yes, funding is at play, but not all 90,000 world-wide are cherry picking data. Comparing the Covid experience to climate study is apples and oranges. Up in the sky, those are condensation trails. As for chem trails: where in the production of jet fuel is the chemical added? Where is the secret tank in airplanes where the chemical is stored?

    • Chem trails: straw man.
Did you notice how those who even questioned the “vaccine” were demonized and persecuted? Many of those 90 thousand climate alarmists will stay in line, if not for funding, at least to keep from being attacked by their colleagues.

  19. People walked across the Bering Land Bridge thousands of years ago; where I sit right now was once covered in thousands of feet of ice; Unga Island has petrified trees on it… I could go on and on, but the point is that the earth has been in a state of change since CREATION, and none of it had anything to do with the burning of carbon based fuels. One volcano can create far more havoc with the climates around the world than years and years of men’s activity. And no one can stop that no matter how hard they try! To think otherwise is a silly god complex.
Climate alarmism is a tool of leftist and globalist control, nothing more or less.
