Results roll in: Peltola, Begich, Dahlstrom, Salisbury are top four

Editor’s note: Numbers are being updated at 9 a.m. Aug. 21. Expect changes.

Polls closed at 8 p.m. in Alaska, and the first results of the 2024 primary are rolling in. These numbers are dynamic and will change. Some seats are uncontested, while others have fewer than four candidates. This is a “final four” primary, so the top four candidates in any race will proceed to the November election. Turnout appears to have been light across the state.

Here’s what we know (for now we are not reporting the uncontested races): 318 of 403 (78.91%) have reported. Voters Cast: 96,539 ballots of 605,482 registered voters (15.94%). With absentee ballots still coming in, turnout may be about 17% by the time the final tally is certified.

Dahlstrom had a press release prepared that went out immediately. She said she will not drop out of the race and that she is the only one who can beat Peltola. Earlier in the race, she said she would sit down with Gov. Mike Dunleavy and Nick Begich and have a discussion, but tonight she canceled those plans. She was spotted casually shopping at Nordstrom rack on Election Day afternoon, while three towns in Alaska did not open their voting centers; as lieutenant governor, elections are her primary responsibility.

Earlier in the race, Begich said many times that if he was not the leading Republican, he would drop. Tuesday, he’s the leading Republican by nearly 7 points, while Dahlstrom trails the leader, Peltola, by 30 points.

Nick Begich posted a statement saying he has surged as the “decisive Republican nominee in Tuesday’s primary.
Conservative voters across Alaska issued a mandate for their choice of nominee.”

“Tonight’s votes demonstrate incontrovertibly two key results:
● First, Nick Begich has been identified by Alaskan voters as the candidate they feel confident can defeat
Mary Peltola in November.
● Second, despite her cash advantage and relentless advertising barrages, Mary Peltola remains
vulnerable in the November general election.”

Peltola has had millions of dollars at her disposal from national fundraising efforts through Act Blue. Begich has raised almost all of his money from in state.

“I am deeply grateful to Alaskans for delivering our campaign a resounding victory in today’s primary,” said
Begich. “The voters sent a clear message: I am the best Republican candidate to beat Mary Peltola in
November. To get that done we must unite as conservatives. I congratulate Nancy Dahlstrom on a well-run
race. Unified, it is clear that Republicans can defeat both Mary Peltola and the ranked choice system that only
benefits the Democrats.”

In its statement, the National Republican Congressional Committee made no mention of Dahlstrom, who the organization had backed with massive funding: “Extreme Democrat Mary Peltola talks a good game in Alaska, but her voting record enabled Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and the Squad’s liberal agenda destroying Alaska’s future. Actions speak louder than words. Peltola’s failed record made Alaskans poorer and less safe, which is why we are confident Alaskans will flip the seat red again as it was under Don Young,” said NRCC spokesman Ben Petersen.

      • I feel Republicans in Alaska are lazy and don’t really turnout in primaries and off-years. If 2020 and 2016 are good representations I expect higher turnout during the Presidential election. Let’s just hope Trump floats the people down ballot.

    • This isn’t the general. In the general turnout will be far larger. Dahlstrom MUST leave the race OR really educate voters to not rank Peltola at all. However, if Peltola gets the 50 we lose. WE MUST DO OUR PART and get everyone we talk to to vote for Begich.

      • Exactly, DO NOT rank more than one candidate. Vote for your choice and ONLY your choice, the other “rank” vote just muddy the waters. This is advice from an election official.

        • This is nonsense. Begich 1st and Dahlstrom 2nd. We can’t afford this level of stupidity a second time. If Palin and Begich voters had worked together last time we would have won.

          • Most of the Begich voters are dumb.
            Rank the damn Red.
Begich finished in third place two times.
            Didn’t drop out.
Begich voters didn’t rank the red – gave the election to Peltola.
Now they are saying don’t rank the red?!?!.
            Again!
Yes, I voted for Begich and I’m ranking the red.
            Please don’t be dumb.
Y’all cost us the last election and you’re doing it again!

        • Wrong Bill. I don’t know who you are getting your advice from, but if we only rank one Republican, it is over. Dahlstrom needs to remove herself from the race and quit muddying the waters.
Learn about ranked choice voting by starting at Phil Izon’s website that teaches about RCV and how it hurts the voters.

      • Here is the real problem with RCV, it forces me to give a vote to somebody I find objectionable and wrong for the position, but unless I rank Nancy 2nd, Mary wins. RCV pretends that candidates are interchangeable equivalents. They are NOT!
RCV is for lemmings, who simply vote for the party, regardless of how depraved the actual candidate is. It subverts the individual’s ability to only support, who they think is the right person for the job. Will I rank the red? Yes but grudgingly and disgustedly. Hope we get rid of it this time around!

    • Republicans who despise Dahlstrom will rank Peltola ahead of Dahlstrom, assuring a Peltola win. The exact same thing happened two years
ago when Palin ruined Begich’s chances of winning. The selfish Nancy Dahlstrom does not get the final say. The Republicans voters get the last say. And they will rank Dahlstrom LAST.

  1. That’s nice. Still not voting tho. Voting implies consent to the system that is destroying Alaska and the nation at large.

    • Wrong, not voting implies consent to be ruled by that system. Your primary responsibility is to place the vote, your secondary responsibility is make sure it is properly tabulated.

      • Wrong. Let me illustrate by an example:

If you are a group of people pushing a car, for whatever reason, and you continue pushing it forward despite other people telling you that there is a cliff ahead of you, then you, along with everyone else, is responsible for going over that cliff.

The US Founding Fathers knew this and created, at first, the Confederacy, and then, the Republic. They changed the rules because following the previous ones created a system in which they had little to no control.

They left us a way to legally change our system of governance. We should take the opportunity to do so, since approximately 200 years of this voting system produced what we are experiencing now; and yet, somehow THIS vote will fix everything.

    • “…….Still not voting tho. Voting implies consent to the system that is destroying Alaska and the nation at large………”
Thanks for that. Sit back and read the news in how the grownups dictate your future.

    • And not voting does NOTHING to stop it. Sitting on the curb and watching the house burn implies consent to the ruin. Whom are you actually helping? I’d argue you’re helping in our nation’s destruction.

    • Go on to tell us how nice it is to have that warm and fuzzy feeling to be one of the democrats favorite foot soldiers.
Think about that as you march with the rest of the herd over the cliff.

    • Interestingly “the system” you so derisively spit on, has worked fine for over 200 years, electing leaders to run our government. While there have always been squabbles, it has managed to hold the nation together and moving forward all this time.
But clearly while you think you are smarter than the average bear, you decline to offer an alternative. Instead you quite cowardly weasel out of the one responsibility you have as a citizen. I bet the citizens of North Korea would love to take your place and actually have a choice!

        • Not sure about that, as he/she also references the “nation at large”, which indicates to me that voting as a system to elect our representatives seems to be the issue. RCV is a method not a system.
There are a lot of these “don’t vote it is giving consent” guys popping up. I think their purpose is to make people (without a decent civics background knowledge) think about sitting this one out. It is in my opinion pure manipulation of the voters, as the whole point of voting is to give a mandate to one person to speak for/represent us in our government.

    • Interesting thought. “Establishment Republicans”. Given that Trump and Speaker Johnson (voted in as Speaker after conservative Republicans evicted Speaker McCarthy), and Majority Whip Scalise endorsed Dahlstrom, I’m not sure what to think about that moniker. Can you really describe Trump as an “establishment” Republican? Heck, can you even describe him as a conservative? How about Speaker Johnson?
Frankly, I believe I’m witnessing a civil war in its early stages, certainly political, social, ideological, and even psychological. Even martial in some senses with the mass shootings, school shootings, riots, crime, police shootings, road rage, etc. I’ve been through this multiple times, too, specifically the U.S. in the 1960’s and in Southeast Asia in the early ’70’s. The conservative Republicans have politically been isolated by the rest of the party who have figured out the political benefits of “ruling coalitions”. I’m not sure how long this will go on before the nation explodes/implodes, but it’s certainly where we’re at right now.
And Trump has exactly one last chance IF he wins in November. He walks into the White House as a lame duck with a HUGE job in front of him, and with the same (or likely more) resistance to overcome.
Good luck, especially if you actually believe that Nick Begich will be your Redeemer, even if he finally wins an election……….which isn’t looking likely……….at all………..

  2. Just now, on election night, Alaska’s (Leftist) News Source, KTUU Channel 2’s 10 PM News showed Nancy Dahlstrom’s video response to being so far being behind Nick. Nancy said with *no facial expression at all*: “*I feel great* about it.” So she’s starting out be lying to us Alaskans on camera.

Then Rebecca Palsha tells how Nick pledged to drop out if he came in third so what happened last time couldn’t this time. Nancy was asked if she would do the same. Palsha states: “She says she *will stay in this race*.”

Palsha then reads Dahlstrom’s statement that she said just came in: “From day 1, this campaign has been *about defeating Mary Peltola* in November. Tonight’s results show my message of standing up for Alaska’s interests….”

But Dahlstrom knows that if she stays in, Mary Peltola *will not be defeated,* because she’s splitting the vote. She knows many Alaskans won’t rank Nick and herself both.

So here, she’s lying again. Her main goal can’t be “about defeating Mary Peltola from day 1,” because now she’s guaranteeing Peltola won’t be defeated.

On Amy Dembosky show, Amy told Dahlstrom of Nick’s commitment to dropping out if he ended up behind her in today’s primary, and asked Nancy if she’d commit to doing the same.

Nancy told Amy that if that happened (apparently what’s now happening), she’d sit down with Nick and have a conversation.

BUT, she’s already committed to staying in no matter what, and apparently had no sit-down conversation with Nick first, to discuss what the way ahead should be.

She’s showing she can’t be trusted in any office, is not a woman of character. No one should vote for her.

She’s not about doing what’s best for Alaska. She’s about Nancy, just like Sarah was about Sarah — ego.

    Integrity Matters!

    Truth Matters!

Doing the right thing no matter what matters!
That’s Godly character, what’s required of those who represent us.

Something is seriously wrong with this woman!

    • Nancy Dahlstrom, regarding what you have done and are doing that’s not right — and also, to whomever lied to Trump about Nick (so that Trump publicly wrote false things about Nick in his endorsement statement, trusting Alaskans to tell him the truth), please realize the eternal consequences, not just how the people perceive you and what you think you can get away with, while making sure Peltola wins again — God sees and knows everything, and cannot be fooled. We will all give account for what we’ve done:

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has DONE in the body, whether good or evil.” – 2 Cor. 5:10

And this is what God says about those who are truly His, the overcomers and those who really are not, “all liars…”:

“HE WHO OVERCOMES SHALL INHERIT all things, and I will be his God and HE SHALL BE MY SON. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and *ALL LIARS* shall have their part IN THE LAKE WHICH BURNS WITH FIRE and brimstone, which is the second death.” – Revelation 21:7-8

We must actually abide in Christ to be “in Christ,” “walking not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” Then we have “no condemnation,” Romans 8:1-17 really says.

And when we’re right with one another and God, then the Greatest Awakening will happen “that the world will know!” — Jesus’ promise to us in John 17 — what needs to happen really soon.

Alaskans walking according to their own flesh instead of according to the Holy Spirit are rapidly destroying Alaska and the USA, and need to reconcile with those they’ve hurt in order to fully repent and have clean consciences — so we can one day see Jesus face to Face with “no condemnation” — and while still on earth see AMAZING things happen in these last days here in Alaska!

      Please?

  3. WOW I guess alot of Alaskans like having outsiders tell them how to vote and live. The tough Alaska spirit replaced by a bunch Of Betas metro sexual Soyboys. Sad really.

    • No threats. Threats are not okay. Violence is not okay. Everything will be done legally, lawfully and peacefully.
One thing that Dahlstrom will see is that THE MAJORITY are going to tell her to take a hike when she tries to run for the governor’s seat.

      • Or, if Dahlstrom inherits the governor’s seat when Dunleavy resigns early, we’ll have Scott Kendall draft a petition to remove her like he did for Dunleavy. But this petition would actually work with plenty of Republican support. Do you hear us, Kendall?

  4. 605+k voters in this state and less than 50k conservative/Republican voters cast their votes. Those are embarrassing numbers.

  5. One has to wonder about Dahlstrom’s motivation, especially understanding how the flawed RCV works. Oddly, or perhaps not, look at all the races and notice how many of them are fronting one dem versus the Republicans. Clearly, the Republicans STILL have not learned as the dems have. As such, and until we can figure this out, we actually have 2 parties, the dems and the DUMBS.

    • Just to be clear, with RCV law the Republican Party has no control whatsoever who can appear on the primary ballot representing themselves as an R. I don’t like it, worked the last couple years to change that, but those efforts failed.

      • The events of 2010 showed that the outcome of the Republican primary is meaningless. Recalling Bob Bird’s recent comment in another story, the Republicans started having a conversation in the late 1980s about nominating by convention, but instead chose the “have your cake and eat it too” path of the Zawacki lawsuit.

  6. Dan Fagan’s show should be VERY INTERESTING TODAY, given Nancy’s commitment to see Peltola win again, the opposite of what she SAYS she stands for.

Dan is a master at getting to the bottom of what’s really going on, so we’re not fooled by what politicians say.

Dan Fagan’s show can be listened to in Anchorage/Mat-Su from 7-9 AM at 1020 AM, 92.5 FM, 104.5 FM or at http://www.1020kvnt.com , where it’s streamed live. Click on “CLICK HERE TO CHECK OUT OUR BRAND NEW WEBSITE.”

All shows are archived soon after the show is over, to be listened to anytime, and are commercial free.

Gonna be a good one today — must hear Alaska!

    • “Dan Fagan’s show should be VERY INTERESTING TODAY……….”
LOL! I can hear it already. Don’t you know what he’s going to rant about? It’s going to be re-run of his Palin Derangement Syndrome.
You’ll love it! I think I’ll cut and split some firewood. Did you hear that we might be running out of gas soon, and our fearless leaders might not even be able to ship some in from out-of-state?

      • Reggie Taylor,

This is some of what you missed by refusing to listen to Dan, which could be done while you cut wood. HIGHLIGHTS I put together from Dan’s show, 8/21/24:

Mike Porcaro is being paid by Nancy Dahlstrom as a consultant, so he’s a compromised Anchorage radio personality.

[My thoughts on Porcaro. Porcaro’s ad agency apparently also made money from Lisa Murkowsky’s campaign. He defended Murkowsky on his show. He also strongly pushed ranked choice voting, so used his large radio platform to deceive a lot of Alaskans, so he’s responsible for it passing (only passed by 1%) and Murkowski staying in, and I’ve heard his ad agency was making money to push ranked choice.

Porcaro’s cohost, Crash spoke of how wonderful marijuana is for himself and others for at least 10 minutes lately, with Porcaro’s approval; though, marijuana dulls people’s consciences so they don’t feel guilt and shame for what they’ve done, so many are blissfully floating along instead of being responsible citizens, living lives with clear consciences.

Porcaro pushed the jab hard with Dr. Keisling, and both refused to tell the truth about high enough vitamin D levels, which would have solved Covid for Alaska.]

Dan spoke of the GLORY politicians get from having so much power. Nancy needs to have the courage to put her personal ambitions aside and do what’s right for the country.

“We’re in a fork in the road for this country. We’ve got a force that is so demonic and so evil… that this COULD BE OVER IN TWO OR THREE YEARS. I’m not kidding.” Terrorists who have been allowed in could explode three dirty bombs simultaneously in three US cities, creating chaos. “Stock market would crash. If a Democrat is in charge they’d declare MARTIAL LAW, and we’d never have an election again. They’d stack the Supreme Court. … WE’RE AT THE BRINK. THIS IS NOT A GAME. … The more Democrats we have in Congress, the closer we get to that brink. Peltola is team tyranny. … These people will bring America to her knees.”

“So Nancy Dahlstrom…. If she chooses to be selfish and advance her own political career, she will have caused GREAT HARM to this nation.”

Leftism is “a CONDITION OF THE HEART,” not about intelligence. “When you set your heart against truth, you’re going to find yourself in a web of lies. … It’s because of arrogance. You look at the hyper-intellectual crowd; they think they know it all because of their intellect. In reality, TRUTH IS FOUND IN HUMILITY. … This is why censorship is such an important part of this movement. … They don’t want TRUTH; they’re AT WAR WITH TRUTH.”

“Leftism is a religion that trumps everything else in life,” including their stated religions.

  7. If Nancy doesn’t bow out, it will be clear that her intention is to get Peltola re-elected. She knows the math at this point, she lost by 7 points to Nick, if she stays in, nobody but Peltola benefits. That must be assumed to be Nancy’s motivation if she doesn’t get behind Nick now. She cannot with a straight face tell us she’s acting in good faith by staying in, much less expecting Nick to drop.

The discipline of the Dems to pull out their competitors in the last election to unite behind Peltola made fools of the republicans. We’re setting up the pins the exact same way this year by splitting our vote.

Sarah didn’t drop out because of her pride, Nancy’s can do better.

    • This is looking bad for Dunleavy, who is insisting Dahlstrom stay in the race. Dahlstrom will bring down Dunleavy too. I sent a letter to the Trump Campaign and told them my $2000 donation will not be forthcoming until he dumps loser Dahlstrom.

  8. What this story clearly illustrates is that somebody can’t (or won’t) perform accurate (or honest) mathematics:
    Mary Peltola, 46,108 votes
    Nick Begich, 25,193 votes
    Nancy Dahlstrom, 18,822 votes
    Matthew Salisbury, 539 votes
    Total Votes 90,722………NOT 92,322
Peltola gained 50.8% of the total, not 49.94%. All three Republicans received a total of 44,614 votes to her 46,108. She won by 1,494 votes. No ranked voting shenanigans with these vote totals in November. She wins. Period.
Now, I’m not quite sure what to make of this, but it seems to confirm what I’ve been positing all along:
Republicans are too stupid to manage a state, and it appears that the electorate knows it. Unfortunately, it appears that the organized crime cartel will be doing it for us.
OR……….the Division of Elections are too stupid (or corrupt) to manage simple mathematics.
OR……….the media can’t (or won’t) report accurate vote data.
Take your pick. In any or all possibilities, we lose.

    • Some of these numbers need to be adjusted Reggie, as they were being constantly updated last night. It’s not that we can’t do math, but it was a late night and dynamic results being updated throughout the night. -sd

      • I understand, Suzanne. Plus I assumed those extra votes might have been for the other candidates further down the ballot. The overall points that should be taken are:
        * Peltola is so far receiving so close to 50% that she might win in the first count if this was a ranked choice ballot
        * The Republicans are tearing each other apart for the independent, non-partisan voters to see and be disgusted about, and it appears to show
        * This showing so far looks really bad for conservatives and really good for Demonrats/RINOs.

    • Or maybe this is a primary and more people will actually cast votes in November rendering the outcome still in question. This is just the race qualifier; that’s why they call it a Primary.

    • The turnout will be much higher in November since it’s a national election. There will be a lot more Republican voters in November, especially with rank choice voting being on the ballot and the opportunity to get rid of it.

    • Reggie, I think with a voter turnout of approx. 17% the only definite conclusion we can draw at this time is that Mary managed to get her peeps out and Nick is the preferred conservative. The general in November will be a whole different ball game and with the presidential election as contested as it is, I expect a much higher voter turn-out, which will diminish Mary’s advantage greatly. Her best strategy would be to make conservatives stay home and in my opinion there isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell for that!

    • The term “(whatever) deniers” was a foundational element of leftist rhetoric for many years. I’m still seeing denial in these comments. Someone else said that Begich won the Republican primary when there is no Republican primary. Then there’s this. I have the initial summary report from the Division of Elections right in front of me and it does reflect 92,322 votes cast. Your comment appears to reflect denial of the fact that there were twelve candidates on the ballot, not the three that (s)nooz outlets chose to acknowledge. Those nine candidates accounted for approximately 2¼% of the vote.

      • “……..Your comment appears to reflect denial of the fact that there were twelve candidates on the ballot…….”
Not at all. Indeed, I mentioned that in my reply to Suzanne. Moreover, I agree with those who note that the general election will have a much greater turnout. It might go well over 50% due to it being a presidential election and more of that drama is sure to pop up in October.
But I also note the growing number of replies on this story indicating that they’ll vote for Peltola after Begich, or they’ll never vote for a Begich. You want to discuss ‘denial’? Okay.
Well, I think it’s pretty obvious that 2022 wasn’t a fluke. Lisa Murkowski is punishing the state party and conservatives for her 2010 primary loss to Joe Miller, her tool was Scott Kendall and RCV, Prop 2 will fail, RCV will take off like a Saturn rocket nationwide, and conservatives have destroyed themselves. They’ll be stabbing each other in the back just like they did to Speaker McCarthy to no avail whatsoever except to intensify their seething exponentially.
        Go ahead; deny that.

  9. Okay, ER-Chugiak, WE ARE SO CLOSE to evicting Merrick. Goecker is closer than those numbers this morning. Now we need to finish Kelly Merrick’s duplicitous political career forever, at least in OUR backyard.
Talk to EVERYONE you know and let them know that KELLY MERRICK was one of two people that gave Democrats the majority in the house a few years ago and the Senate in the last go round. Assuming turnout isn’t higher, it will be, during the general and the Jackson and McCarty voters back JARED GOECKER we will defeat Kelly Merrick and her union leader spouse.
Kodiak you are hopeless that you cannot even field a viable primary opponent to Stutes is an embarrassment.

  10. I’m so disappointed in myself for not being able to vote…my wife got called into a meeting and I had to put the kid to sleep so someone stayed behind. By the time she got back, the polls had already been closed.

  11. Someone will correct me if I am in error. But primary elections are to determine the candidate, for the respective parties, that will face off against the opposing party in the general election.

Under RCV, the primary elections do not accomplish this winnowing. So, they are a waste of time and money.

When we get rid of RCV, voting in the primary elections will have an important purpose- to eliminate the weaker, or less desirable, candidate.

The extreme voter apathy we see in the small numbers of Alaskans who voted in the primary is a direct result of RCV discouraging voting.

    • “………Under RCV, the primary elections do not accomplish this winnowing………”
It winnows the field down to four candidates, regardless of party.
As the comments on this story clearly show, the field can be winnowed down to four Republican candidates, and the Republicans can still lose.

      • The purpose of a primary is to winnow the candidate field down to ONE candidate per party. Not up to four.
And, I would still be opposed to open primaries even if this jungle primary produces four conservatives for the general election. One party, one candidate in the general.

    • Well, one job of the primary that I see right now is that the primary is narrowing the list of candidates down to the top four if there are more than four running for a particular race. An open primary (what we have right now) is worthless.

  12. Clear winner for the R’s: NB3.
    .
Clear loser for the R’s: Nancy Dahlstrom.
    .
Get out of the way Dahlstrom, you are an impediment to the entire state of Alaska. THAT will be your legacy if you don’t drop out and let Nick Begich proceed. He doesn’t even need your endorsement to win.

  13. Nancy lied. She told everyone at the Republican Convention that she would sit down with Nick and have a conversation if she came in third. She lied through his teeth.

  14. Again crappy turnout. Afraid there is not enough Republicans left. They either have died off or moved. Didn’t like Trump endorsing her. Had to be because of Dunleavy as they are friends. So I would suggest we contact our Governor to have a talk with this lady.

  15. It’s already played out. Begich and Dahlstrom will split the vote, Peltola will win just like last time. RCV working as designed.

  16. Feel free to blame rank choice voting or that candidate who you think should step out of the race, but in the end it is the will of the voters that will
prevail. No one can force you to rank the red. No one can force you to interview the candidates yourself, no one can force you to do the research needed to make an informed decision. Go ahead, wait for that perfect candidate, the one who will make every thing right again… forever…. so you can go back to sleep again. As if you ever did wake up. The voter turnout rates tell me a very, very sad story. You all know to whom I speak. It is your
excuses and irresponsibility that is murdering the Constitution and rule of law. You are to blame. May your chains cause you untold misery…for all of your days.
