The wreckage of a plane matching the description of the missing Cessna Caravan in Western Alaska has been located by searchers.
The Nome-bound plane was located approximately 34 miles southeast of Nome. Three bodies were found inside and reported to be deceased. There was no report on the other seven believed to be on the flight that left Unalakleet, southeast of Nome, on Thursday afternoon.
Update: The remaining seven people are believed to be inside the aircraft “but are currently inaccessible due to the condition of the plane. Our heartfelt condolences are with those affected by this tragic incident,” the Coast Guard said.
“Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic incident,” the Coast Guard said in a statement.
The N number on the plane appear to match the description of the Cessna Caravan that is operated by Bering Air, an aviation company that flies people and freight around Western Alaska.
Thank you for the update Suzanne as many of us have been praying for those who were on the plane and their families.
Only 34 miles to go, almost made it. So sad, Alaska in the winter is very unforgiving.
Oofta. Bad news for sure.
This is a tragedy that is going to be felt in Nome & Unalkleet for a long time. May they all rest in peace.
All along the coast it will be felt for a very long time. ? As Bering Air is our only passenger airline carrier in this region of Alaska, and a very good passenger airline carrier. Condolences ?
A sad day for all of Alaska – when we have these horrible accidents it affects every city, town , village in the state of Alaska as we are all connected .
RIP to all the people on this plane
Surprised that the emergency crash locator beacon did not send its signal. They are always required equipment and regularly tested and inspected. The new 406 models are very reliable if the batteries are regularly changed as required and if they do not get corroded. It should have immediately pinpointed the plane’s position.
If the plane got into serious icing conditions any de ice equipment may not have been able to keep up. Heavy ice on the prop blades and on flying surfaces may have taken it down. And if by ‘holding”, which the pilot said he was doing while the runway was cleared, the plane depleted its fuel it might come down rapidly. Especially if it was iced up!
Ten people on board, many with baggage, is a big load for a Caravan. Without power and ice on the flying surfaces and on the prop, if the engine stopped, the plane would probably go down like a rock.
The NTSB will probably figure out exactly what happened.
The Cessna 208 is a solid aircraft. Far too early to say that it was an icing problem. It could have been due to many possibilities. A 208 with 10 passengers went down during takeoff at Pt. Barrow in the 1990’s, killing all aboard.
This is a very tragic day in Alaska. We pray for their souls.
I remember that crash. It was an entire Eskimo family of 10 that got killed. The pilot fueled up the Caravan, but only on one wing. He forgot to fuel the other wing. Plane took off from Barrow, got airborne, tilted on the heavy wing and drove into the ground. The family was heading to a memorial service at Wainwright for a relative. Weights and balances are not just important, they can be a matter of life and death.
Juan Brown on YouTube will be following this story. The plane was fully upgraded including the most advanced deicing system. This is the first loss for Bering and the first hull loss for this highly improved Caravan. From the pictures, it has the appearance of loss of control and flat spin down. Everybody knows somebody up here and every loss is an extended personal loss.
According to the NTSB the 208 that went down in Pt Barrow was caused by icing. What other reasons do you think caused this one to crash?
Where is President Trump? Widen your circle of care outside the beltway, Mr. President.
You want me to believe you care?
Show up, stand up, pay tribute.
Resources and action is logical, I want to know you believe we matter.
I need to know we matter. I want to stand up for your draining the swamp, but I need you to show up when we are hurting.
We that support you have sacrificed personal life and career trajectory sacrifices.
Your constant expression of leadership is transactional-I need to know your expression of America First, is not just about flex.
I need to feel that the reason you sign executive orders is because you care for people like me – power and policy is about America First -supposedly.
But your words are not focused on us. Your words focus on others being less.
I need you to be a better leader. I need you to be an America First leader through your thoughtfulness and choosing your words intentionally.
I need more today.
I need to know you care about me.
Thank you for sending in the coast guard, national guard, FBI, but was that for people like me?
The president isn’t omniscient, omnipresent, or omni-anything else. He is doing the best that he can.
But I’ll say a prayer for you Trudy. ?
You might want to say something relevant to the subject matter of this article Trudy. Or send your comments to ADN. They specialize in anti Trump irrelevant comments such as yours.
I, Me , We need, I need, nuff said.
Too many old planes & young pilots in AK… don’t get onboard!
That’s right, Steve. Hide under a rock, stay put, and pray to Allah!
Are you related to Jack S and the crash at AIA from roughly 1980?
God rest their souls! And peace to their family and friends back home.
It is disrespectful to bring politics into this at this time. Save it for later. There is just too much grief right now. It is good the plane was found and family, altho this accident us horrific, can rest knowing and grieve by putting their loved ones to rest.
