Pam Melin: Who is turning Alaska purple on purpose?

RSLC map shows Alaska's Legislature is purple due to Republicans enabling Democrats.

By PAM MELIN

The Republican State Leadership Committee just confirmed everything we’ve been warning about: Alaska is being hijacked from the inside — and the enemy isn’t just wearing blue. It’s wearing red.

According to the RSLC, Alaska is now a purple state.

Not because Democrats surged. Not because voters flipped. But because too many Republicans in the Legislature deliberately handed Democrats the keys — and too many others stood by and let them do it.

Let’s not sugarcoat this:

We’ve got the governor’s mansion. We’ve got a GOP lieutenant governor. We’ve got a fully Republican congressional delegation. And, on paper, majorities in both legislative chambers.

So why are Democrats calling the shots?

Because the establishment Uniparty has been quietly working to dilute conservative momentum. Enter: the Reagan Caucus.

Despite the patriotic name, this isn’t Reagan’s conservatism. It’s a polished operation with one mission: Undercut America First conservatives by forcing every race into the mushy middle.

Their playbook is simple:

  • Stall endorsements
  • Control the primary narrative
  • Prop up establishment-friendly candidates who caucus with Democrats while pretending to be “reasonable Republicans”

They’ve openly declared themselves anti-MAGA.

That’s not a conspiracy theory. It’s in their own mission statement. They’ve made it crystal clear: They think Trump voters are the problem.

So ask yourself:

Why are the same people always telling you to “wait until after the primary” before endorsing anyone?
Why are they preaching “consensus” while publicly snubbing candidates with actual grassroots support?

Because timing is everything.

By freezing endorsements until after the primary, they keep control of the board.

While principled conservatives wait in good faith, the establishment kingmakers are cutting deals, forming coalitions, and flooding the ballot with just enough “tolerable RINOs” to fracture the vote under Alaska’s ranked-choice chaos.

This isn’t about unity. It’s about manipulation.

This isn’t just a governor’s race. It’s a full-spectrum takeover: Governor. Lt. Governor. State House. Senate. All of it.

What you’re watching is the slow-motion hijacking of the Alaska Republican Party, gift-wrapped as “moderation.”

And make no mistake: It’s not accidental. It’s a deliberate, coordinated strategy to morph Alaska from a bold, America First stronghold into a neutered, Uniparty-controlled purple state. Their weapon? Ranked-choice voting and narrative control.

That’s why they’re saying, “Wait until after the primary.”
That’s why they preach “neutrality” while rigging the game behind the curtain.

Staying “neutral” is just their way of pulling the strings without leaving fingerprints on the knife.

Meanwhile, legislative aides, chiefs of staff, and consultant-class Republicans toss around labels like “radical right,” trash grassroots conservatives, smear women’s clubs, and belittle candidates who actually fight for the people.

They don’t want fighters. They want obedience.

And they’ll shame, silence, and sabotage anyone who steps out of line.

Even worse? Some of these elected Uniparty players have said out loud that Alaska must “move to the middle” to keep their grip on power.

Translation? They’re willing to turn Alaska purple to stay in charge.

Is that what you want, Alaska?

Because here’s the reality: You voted for Trump in 2024 by 13 points. Your voice was loud and clear. And they’re doing everything they can to bury it.

This isn’t Right vs. Left anymore. It’s controlled vs. free.

And right now, the Reagan Caucus and their allies are working to control this state, while pretending they’re just being “pragmatic.”

Let me be blunt: The middle is a mirage. Consensus is camouflage. And “neutrality” is just the tool they use to take your voice and hand it to someone else.

Alaska isn’t purple because of voters. It’s purple because of cowards, consultants, and calculated sabotage.

But it doesn’t have to stay that way — unless we let it.

There’s a real difference between principled leadership and political cosplay.
Between a candidate with convictions and one curated by consultants.
Between real unity based on shared values—and weaponized unity used to freeze out conservatives behind closed doors.

The game is onAnd the strategists are counting on you to stay asleep.

But here’s the twist:

They’re not afraid of Democrats. They’re afraid of you — the voter who won’t comply, the voice they can’t manage, the movement they couldn’t cancel in 2016, 2020, 2024, or now.

It’s time to choose.

Choose bold.
Choose early.
Send a message.

Pick candidates who aren’t trying to get invited to Democratic cocktail parties.

Because if we don’t make our move before the primary, we’ll be stuck with what’s left after the establishment rigs the board.

And by then, it’ll be too late.

The battle for 2026 has already started. They’re hoping you don’t notice.

  1. There is only ‘one’ way to resolve this, not exactly sexy or pretty (definitely not legal – ethical), but it’s effective. When cutting out the cancer from the patient, all options must be considered. Next, comes the courage and will power to execute with precision and deliberate action. Anything less compromises reasonable expectations of success.

  2. We the people who consider ourselves patriots have been trying to sound the warning about this for years. We were considered paranoid and behind the times. Well…it’s here! America is rotting away from the inside out. I can guarantee that there are those of us that will NOT go down without a fight!!!

  3. Alaska has always been purple. Jay Hammond was a democrat, and the one that created the PFD. That’s why our state is returning back to its roots, because Republican leadership isn’t fully consistent with our values. Why do you think Bill Walker was ever an elected as an independent?

    • “Jay Sterner Hammond (July 21, 1922 – August 2, 2005) was an American politician of the Republican Party, who served as the fourth governor of Alaska from 1974 to 1982.”

Please do your research before coming on here because someone “told” you Jay Hammond was a Democrat. They think they know everything until pesky little facts come forward. He was a REPUBLICAN! Stop spewing lies!

      • Regardless of his Republican label, Hammond acted like a Democrat in disguise. Current leftists have taken disguising themselves as Republicans to a new level. The get elected under the “R” banner and then consistently vote with leftists. Few run as Dem anymore. Dim voters are easily deceived. Alaska is blue.

    • And when old Bill Walker finally found out that his political soulmate, Byron Mallot, was a prison worthy pedophile, old Bill ran for the hills. Haven’t seen him since either.

      • You seem to be confused on what a pedophile is? While Mallot was a sexual aggressor his victim was 41 years of age.

    • True ever since FDR sent farming families from the mid-West to Palmer, gave them welfare & made us Blue.
Then oil turned it Red (lot of southerners)
But energy production might make a come back, we’ll see (private sector working people don’t vote for welfare)

    • Hammond discussed that in his autobiography. He spent his youth in upstate New York and southern Vermont at a time when that part of the country was solidly Republican, even though it was mostly liberal. People today make a big deal out of Susan Collins while forgetting all about Margaret Chase Smith. Anyway, he was first elected to the House in 1958, representing an area that was ground zero for Ernest Gruening’s experiment in using the Alaska Territorial Guard as a vehicle to recruit Natives into the Democratic Party. Resultantly, he ran as an independent because he couldn’t justify declaring as a Democrat with his background. Or am I totally off base because you’re applying yet another “you’re either with us or against us” arbitrary definition of Democrat?

      • ??? Hammond was not independent, he beat Hice; in the GOP primary; at the time that primary was the whole shebang, as Dems only had a slim chance that cycle.
Tony Knowles changed that w/his 2 wins, but his 1st win was Very close as was Hammond’s GOP victory over Wally.
        He was a Republican.

  4. So true for so much but missing the other essentials of this mess.

    1. Our “elections” are completely corrupt from the voter rolls to the GOP controlled candidates that are served up to us to the money that finances our candidates (and makes it an auction for the highest paid hooker) to the ridiculous idea of mail in voting to the reality that machines are easily manipulated to the ludicrous idea of rank choice voting (and how that keeps narrowly being kept in place with last minute dumps of votes).

    2. The obvious truth that this mess keeps money flowing into the coffers because a system that works and represents the constitution is not in the best interest of either “party”….angry citizens feel that the only impact they really have is to contribute to the fighter who sounds like they are most likely to support their point of view which turns this into a money printing marketing opportunity.

    3. Probably the saddest part of the problem is that our population is so uneducated about what our government is meant to be – a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC – and more importantly, would not vote for candidates who would defend it because the population is dependent on government to survive. Peel off the blinders and look at what drives our “economy” and realize that a society based on government money printing, grants, healthcare, entertainment, stock market bubbles, and real estate is not sustainable. Couple that with the reality that every person in this current economy is dependent on government largess either directly or indirectly and therefore is voting to keep the leviathan alive because they need their welfare, healthcare, housing, etc. to survive. Even sincere “America First” candidates that get into office just seem to be fighting for getting their constituents the biggest part of the pie, not defending the constitution and working to radically reduce the size of government, following and enforcing our laws, and promoting freedom.

  5. Why even vote with rank choice. Now im seeing why not many vote. What a scam. That’s why they have been trying to get natural gas here in Fairbanks since the 80’s.

  6. The DNC is targeting low population states to pervert as the easiest way to gain control of the US Senate. It’s an obvious strategy. The other problem Alaska faces is outsiders, often liberals, who buy vacation homes in the state and then declare residency in Alaska without ever living here. They’re fake residents who want to gain Alaska residency for the fish and game benefits, tax exemptions for the senior fake residents, home heating oil assistance (to heat their unoccupied houses while they winter Outside) and whatever other benefits they can scam. In my community we have “residents” who have never spent a winter in state. Their spouses and families live in the Lower 48. They show up in the spring, spend the summer playing and hosting a conveyor belt of “friends” who they take out fishing and send home with boxes of our fish. Some get elected to local office where they push taxes, increased services and other non-local ideas that they brought with them. Then they leave for the winter and Zoom into council meetings. It’s nauseating and, worse, many of these fake residents vote liberal in our state and local elections. Residency in Alaska needs to be changed. These people are not residents.

  7. I have voted against the Republicans, even though I am a Republican because the two that nominate me where I lived down in Seward are corrupt Democrat supporting RINO pieces of shit!

  8. Pieces like this, and this site, should be more and very explicit about what actions to take in the voting booth, and make the links very easy to find while in the voting booth.

Most voters aren’t going to read between the lines to decipher who the baddies are. Most voters don’t pay enough attention to the personalities in state or local politics to even attempt that. Explicit guidance for voting strategy in the RCV system is really important.

I’m grateful to MRAK for doing this in the past, this is just encouragement to keep doing it, and let’s not be coy about pointing out the wolves in sheep’s clothing.

    • When your feet step in that voting booth, you should already know who you are going to be voting for. Personally, I think that it is a dangerous habit for people to be looking at their phones while in the voting booth. Too many problems with Dominion machines, wi-fi connections and sharing information.

  9. Have been amazed for too long how our Republican leadership responds so weakly to these issues. It must be shock and awe to keep Alaska as it should be.

    • It would be a significant deterrent to “republicans” joining up and empowering democrats. Why? A solid republican who won’t campaign on republican values and policies but then join and vote with democrats once elected can be much more easily defeated. The reason for that is the primary we had before, not the jungle primary we have now under ranked choice voting, only allows one republican to move forward not the “up to 4 candidates” that can under RCV. Moderate, or “rino” republicans to use the term, can more easily be defeated as they have to win the primary to move on and a record of lying to your constituents and joining democrats would be a death sentence for most Rs in more conservative districts. Tschaibaka was a prime example, without RCV murkowski would have been “out” after the primary and likely her political career was over. She “could” have attempted another write in campaign as she did in 2010 but the data suggests it would have failed. It works the same in most of our state legislative elections too. Hope that helps.

  10. Republican Candidates signing A BINDING CONTRACT to RESIGN IMMEDIATELY if they CAUCUS WITH DEMOCRATS., is needed.

  11. I don’t think Conservative means what you think it means. Maga conservative appears to mean cuts from the mound of clay representing our govt is limited to the dirty dusty clay residue from the Potter’s hands and nothing substantial.

The only consistent flicker of hope is
Rep Massie at the national level setting example after example like his 2018 end dept of education and its reintroduction March 2025. Maybe Rand and Lee at the senate.

Has Nick signed onto this bill? Or the end the fed bill or the end protecting vaccine manufacturers bill?

Elected officials cannot serve two masters. Either they represent Team “Party” (party and their donors) or they represent ALL their constituents.

Freedom and Liberty focused Alaskans and other Americans its time to vote your conscious and go 3rd party. Constitutional Libertarians better fit your “Conservative” Values than either flavor of repubs and their brother the dems.

  12. Blaming Alaska’s supposed shift to “purple” on establishment Republicans, ranked-choice voting, and delayed endorsements ignores the state’s political history and oversimplifies its present. Alaska didn’t become politically complex overnight; it’s been that way since statehood. The 1968 oil boom, the Permanent Fund, and the 1971 Native Claims Settlement Act all shaped a landscape where coalitions, not purity tests and endorsements, win elections and run the legislature.

Today, nearly 60% of Alaskans are registered as Undeclared or Nonpartisan. That’s not sabotage; it’s independence. It’s a demonstration of Alaskan’s dislike for exactly what you are advocating. When Mary Peltola won in 2022, she did so by appealing to a broad electorate and a large native vote, not because of a rigged system. Ranked-choice voting certaainly had lots to do with it, but it also reflects the idea that Alaskan’s hate your style of purity and partisanship (and they largely could care less about endorsements). So Undeclareds see they can rank candidates who can build consensus, not those who attack allies and alienate swing voters; ergo your methods literally force them into the pro-RCV camp.

Donald Trump won Alaska by 13 points in 2024. Conservatism isn’t dead here, but it’s not immune to self-inflicted wounds. Attacking fellow Republicans, dismissing Native influence, and failing to recognize the truth – that Alaska is not, and never was, an ultra-red state, risks turning our slighlyt pink state truly purple. In a place where legislative districts are small and relationships matter, the path to lasting conservative strength lies not in division, but in unity, trust, pragmatic outreach and relationships. You would destroy that.

    • The take down of Alaska did begin in the late 60s or early 70s. It has been such a slow infiltration and take-over that people don’t even know it happened.

  13. Isn’t 61% of the state unregistered or non declared?
    This isn’t purple… it’s non partisan population.
Both sides suck and the majority knows this.

  14. Talk, talk talk. I am a regestered Republican in Willow, AK and have been trying to get invited to Republican meetings and get involved in politics for several years. Even got vetted from the Republicans for running for school board and they selected someone less conservative than me. Still waiting for that invitation to attend the Republican meetings in this district. Closed group of swamp people. This is why we keep losing. I do appreciate Kevin McCabe and Mike Shower, but the swamp keeps putting others in office that are so non effective.

    • Do you want your “invitation” to be gold plated too? Why wait for an invitation? Find out when and where the meetings are held and show up. I can’t imagine anyone would kick you out. I’ve gone to lots of meetings and unless it was ticketed paid event, I just attended. No problem…

  15. I remain an independent voter because I don’t trust any party. That being said, I will never again vote Democrat, because a vote for even a good candidate means more power for the corrupt party bosses. There are also Republicans who will never get my vote, because they have repeatedly shown that they do not support the causes I believe in. Alaska seems to be riddled with people who call themselves Republican in order to get elected, but vote like Democrats when the votes matter.

  16. Time to get back to basics. We have proved that “holding hands and singing Kumbaya” plays right into the hands of Democrats.

  17. Since 65% of voters do not register or identify with D or R parties, it’s a false dichotomy to refer to Alaska as purple. AK appears to be the most independent state in the US. If it’s purple, it’s a very faint shade of purple. This voter assessment is a better measure of how red or blue the state is than a recent presidential election. Although the D’s and R’s next to officials’ names have little meaning (note: the design of the Top-4 system makes this even worse), their activities appear to be representative of citizens. Perhaps the AK state government should become nonpartisan and not bother with the D and R labels, or pass laws that give parties more strict control over which candidates can use the party label. For example, Republicans could tell Murkowski that she must run independent or use a party name besides Republican, but she will probably be re-elected regardless.

  18. Interesting …fills in a big piece of the puzzle. Thank you, Pam Melin.
    .
Reagan Caucus sponsors “oppose the MAGA establishment”, meaning they oppose the will of the majority of Americans who voted for people and ideology making up the “MAGA establishment”.
    .
Means they also oppose borders, language, and cultural values of the majority of Americans.
    .
Their comforting, non-confrontational opposition reads like passive aggression raised to an art form.
    .
Respectfully disagree on one point, Pam. What they do at state and city levels proves they don’t fear us. They simply don’t care.
    .
Why don’t they care? Could Alaska’s Reagan caucus be so confident in their protection from angry voters and state law enforcement that they don’t have to care?
    .
Put another way, would Alaska’s Reagan caucus be a thing if Alaska’s election and judicial systems were –not– so easily corruptible?
    .
Sure and the battle for 2026 has already started, but isn’t the point of battle to make the other side do what you want them to do?
    .
How can you/we make them do anything without taking control of the battlespace, in this case Alaska’s election and judicial systems, the very things protecting the Reagan caucus from accountability?
    .
How do we go about taking control of the battlespace, do we petition the feds for reinforcements since local and state help is out of the question, when and where do we sign such a petition?

    • Morrigan,
You raise sharp, essential points, and I truly appreciate the way you’re thinking several layers deep. You’re absolutely right that what we’re facing isn’t just about personalities or party labels, it’s about systems, shields, and strategy.

The Reagan Caucus (and their handlers) don’t fear voters because, up until now, too many voters either didn’t fully understand the game or didn’t realize they were in one. These aren’t just RINOs or moderates, this is a self-protecting political class that uses soft rhetoric to push hard outcomes: control, compromise, and consolidation of power. You saw it in the way they position themselves “above the fray” while silently coordinating the middle into submission.

But I don’t believe the answer is a petition to the feds. The answer is us. We take back the battlespace by taking back the ballot. And that starts with an educated, activated voter base that isn’t afraid to call out the deception, organize boldly, and vote surgically. We don’t need permission. We need precision.

The enemy thrives in the shadows of confusion…onion-layered lies, procedural games, and a media that plays right along. But every layer we peel back exposes the truth, and that’s where our power lies.

This fight isn’t JUST about elections, it’s about making them impossible to ignore, manipulate, or brush aside. We reclaim control when we show up relentlessly, out-organize the establishment, and most importantly… remind every elected official that their position is on loan, and it can be repossessed.

Keep thinking boldly. Keep questioning. But above all, keep moving, because that’s how we win.

  19. We have just witnessed, with the override of the Guv’s veto on teacher pork, that a position based only on “high principle” will fail against the power and money of unions, the legacy media and the Left in general. The key going forward is to enhance alliances and make a few deals. Working with productive industry is always a good idea. A conservative Republican sitting back and relying on “high principle” will lose much of the time. A dose of practical politics is essential.

  20. Republicans do vote – Alaska’s in-state and local elections are RCV. RCV and the ballot counters are the issue. However, it is time to get rid of some folks in Juneau who aren’t doing their job

  21. It it too hard to understand!
    R is 25%, D is 16% the rest of Alaskans over 50%!

Get a grip, touch base with reality and focus on working together.
