Muni clerk’s office puts thumb on scale for incumbents

The Anchorage Election Office “Find Your Dropbox” feature on its website gives incumbents an advantage by showing visitors the name of the incumbent of each district.

Critics point out that this constitutes a partisan/political activity, since it could be construed to favor the election of the incumbent.

If a voter is looking for where the drop box is in his or her district, the map will pinpoint one, but in doing so adds the extra information on a second tab that gives voters the names of only one of the candidates on the ballot.

The Anchorage Municipal Election is under way, with ballots having arrived in mailboxes last week. They are due into a drop box or must be postmarked by April 4 at 8 pm to be counted.

The election office has received over 900 ballot envelopes as of Friday night.

  1. Is something like this a did Barbara Jones has directed done or something done by the far left minions she has surrounded herself with…it is childish but vindictive and continues to show they will cheat on any level to stay in power..!

  2. This move may backfire on them. Even a newcomer should be able to see that more of the same is not good. Anyone living in Anchorage should vote for anyone but an incumbent. And they should also be informed to vote no on all of the bonds.

  3. This should be illegal. The same as not allowing any political pamphlets, flyers, signs or other propaganda at the election polling sites. The ballot boxes and information about them should be handled the same (have the same rules) as a polling place would have.

  4. Funny, the election office didn’t mention Felix Rivera’s name when giving out the information for the election to recall him.

    • No, but they basically allowed Felix to campaign right on the ballot itself. He had a paragraph or two listing all of his “accomplishments” which should have never been allowed on the ballot for a possible recall vote.

  5. LGBTQ and their facilitators fast at work, while on the public payroll. This is how the new election process works.

  6. Got the robocall that my ballot has been received. They didn’t mention which dumpster it was “processed “into

  7. Sadly, it doesn’t matter. All the bonds will pass, the largess of Government will increase, and the assembly will still be liberal progressives. The token “conservative” on the school board might win but the one occasional protest vote there is not going to ever change anything. Anchorage is lost because too many people are chowing at the troff and have a twisted world view. They will continue to vote in these policies and people. True conservatives are vastly outnumbered by the mushy middle and the far left. Unions own April elections. That is why they put all this junk in these elections. Hoping that the policies of the left will open up people’s eyes and they will start voting conservative is nothing more than a blind hope. If that was true, San Francisco would be the most conservative city in the nation.

“As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man—
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began:—
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her mire,
    And the burnt Fool’s bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;
And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!” – Kipling

  8. Personally, I would not have a problem including all of the candidates names on the map. It is quite possible that someone does not know the extents of their district, and wants to be sure their ballot gets into the correct box. (Yes, I know, it does not matter which box it is dropped in, but not everyone is as informed as all that.) But, they do know who is their current representative, so they might make their selection in that manner.
    .
But, it must include ALL of the candidates, not just the incumbent. Otherwise, the city is, in my opinion, pushing to ensure the incumbents win.
    .
Know what would stop this kind of underhanded tactics? In person voting.

  9. I don’t see it as necessarily helping the incumbents. In fact, with so much disgust over the incumbents in the Assembly and School Board, it helps voters know whom to vote against!

Thanks for reminding me to vote against Constant!

    • I do not see it that way. Mail in voting may get more people to vote, the problem IS more people voting, not more informed people voting. There should be no assumptions made that voters looking at this page are paying attention to local politics.
Having a ballot show up in your mail box, whether you requested one or not, lets the people who just do not follow local politics vote without effort. It is easy to assume they will vote for the person currently holding the seat because they have no reason not to. After all, if they are not willing to take the effort to vote in person, they are likely not following local politics.
Or they might vote for the candidate they see the most signs for, whatever.
Either way, the Muni should not be posting the name of the incumbent. It does sway the vote.

      • Interesting…
I wonder if that changes based on geographic location. I am in a district where the incumbent has term limited out.
        Checking again…
        .
And, I was clicking on the drop boxes, not the district. Click on the district and the incumbents do pop up. Oh well, I was hoping the Muni clerk was actually paying attention to the population. Should have known better.

  10. This a part of the Muni’s GIS system; it’s probably been there like that for years and someone only recently clicked over to the second page. I’ve surfed that system for all manor of information on property and never had reason to look at this particular page.

It would be nice if newbies voted ‘No incumbents,’ but I’ll not hold my breath. I’ve mailed my ballot in, though I have little hope of fixing this cluster **** that is Los Anchorage.

  11. This is ELECTIONEERING by the MOA; plain & simple, which is against State law.
And if we complain about election procedures it’s because we are ‘deplorables’ (in a basket)

  12. It is the same thing as leaving a Rivera campaign flyer in the voting booth.
PLEASE vote everyone ….. this may be a chance to change our assembly …. people are upset & rightly so.

    F. Rivera has been here 9 years …. came up after HS ….went to APU …. worked a year for Mayor Berk and has been ruining our town, as an assemblyman, ever since.
