Heads up: What you need to know about May Day protests planned for Alaska this week

24

Partisan protests are ahead for this week in Alaska and across the nation.

Alaska’s socialists, progressives, never-Trumpers, and Democrats will be part of the nationwide wave of May Day demonstrations, repurposing the traditional socialist labor holiday into another in the series that have taken place in opposition to the Trump White House.

Organized under the banners such the “50501” and “Hands Off!” movements, the rallies are part of a broader national mobilization involving over 150 progressive, labor, and civil rights organizations.

For those traveling to Seattle or other major cities in the Lower 48, be aware that freeways may be blocked and traffic in town centers to be impeded, as the May Day protests may be the biggest yet in the series that started immediately after Donald Trump was sworn in. Owners of Tesla vehicles may want to garage them for the day to avoid vandalism.

In Alaska, events are scheduled in multiple communities, including Anchorage, Fairbanks, Sitka, Valdez, Skagway, Haines, Wasilla, Talkeetna, Girdwood, and Gustavus.

Most of these gatherings are set to take place Thursday and feature marches, chanting, speeches, and the same kinds of cardboard signs used in recent weeks that call for the impeachment and imprisonment of Trump, calling for the removal of Elon Musk from his role in creating more government efficiency. And protesters will stand up for waste, fraud and abuse by the government.

The “50501” movement, named for “50 protests, 50 states, one movement,” has been coordinating many of these efforts. In Anchorage, the Party for Socialism and Liberation is among the local groups spearheading the May Day events. Their outreach emphasizes opposition to what they describe as the administration’s “far-right billionaire agenda.

In Alaska, there are events planned in these communities (not a comprehensive list):

  1. Seems like all the usual suspects. A large group of people who have become co-dependent on government handouts that rely on my tax dollars to survive. Good riddance.

Now that they don’t have the government enabling their way of life, they can come together as a community and support each other.

    • Alaska is one of the most subsidized states in the union, most jobs are here due to it. Fishing, mining, drilling, logging, construction all heavily govt. subsidized industries. The Cut, Kill, Dig, Drill crowd who fancy themselves independent self sustaining folks wouldn’t exist without govt “handouts”.

  2. Are we sure that these aren’t the 5150 protests?

Does anyone else remember a few short years ago when the left was claiming that the right was conducting “astroturfing” protests when they were in fact organized by grassroot efforts, now the left isn’t even pretending that their protests are anything but sponsored events by big money leftists, likely using money left over from handouts at the end of the Obama/Biden/Harris Administration.

  3. Even though I may disagree with them they have the right to protest. However, I think it would be nice for a “counter” gathering across the street! Anyone up for a pro-Trump, pro-2nd amendment, pro-smaller government rally?

  4. Actually, lots of Republicans will be participating as well 🙂 Indeed, the very idea that these responses to hysterics of Trump’s 100 days are purely partisan is refuted by the fact that more and more elected Republicans are dismayed at the antics of the clown posse cabinet, not to mention Trump and Reagan appointed judges.

      • You and Marc still believe the mainstream media disinformation. Let me guess you believe the same poll numbers they are pushing that they used in August of 2024

    • Now Marc you have to give Trump credit for his most impactful actions in the first 100 days! He was able to end federal support for paper straws, end production of the penny, declassify the JFK files, and win his golf club’s championship! FDR would be so proud if alive.

    • The true clown show is how the media portrays Trump.

You are probably still hung up on how he wore a blue suit to the Pope’s funeral.

      You are being played.

    • Clown posse? Like the former nuclear waste guy who stole women’s luggage and wore their dresses while barking like a dog?

    • Actually, Marc, it is 99.9 % pure partisan hysterics of the left. I am not a pure Republican, having been greatly disappointed by previous and current Rs in the U.S. Senate, for example (i.e. Murky). But President Trump has greatly exceeded my hopes in these first 100 days of his administration.

Get on with it. Curse, march, and wave the nasty signs. But if anyone of your ilk vandalizes my pickup… well, you can only hope that they have medical insurance.

    • Oh yes more retirees and the government assistant crowd, out howling at the moon with their cardboard signs, getting their side hustle on.

  5. “What!!!!” Ketchikan didn’t make the list????
Will our community Liberals (God Bless them) not be outraged if not included. Please review the listings, there must have been an missing oversight.
    Cheers,
    Johnson-Ketchikan

  6. The same folks here as before. Middle aged women, he/she’s with hair the color of rainbows, and other clueless roamers. Most won’t even know why they’re there. They’ll sing, chant, yell, then depart leaving all their trash behind.

  7. Old boring people have old boring festivals.

People need to get a hobby and turn off the TV.

    Lol.

  8. The most significant accomplishment of Mr. Trump is to start the process of “defunding the Left”. Without consistent financial support that is quietly siphoned from government agencies to thousands of Leftist organizations and NGOs, those same organizations will rather rapidly dissipate. The funding diversion amounts to tens of BILLIONS over many years. This explains the extreme rage over the elimination of USAID, the phony energy grants of EPA and even defunding of NPR/PBS. The Soros family will continue to support the Leftist cabal but they cannot sustain jt for long. My message to the protesters: The party is over. Go do something productive that actually helps people. Stop the performative stuff. Grow up.
