THE ANCHORAGE DAILY PLANET

If you do not fear for the future of the United States, consider this: Polling found some 70 percent of millennials, those born between 1981 and 1996, show frightening support for communism and socialism.

The survey, conducted by the Victims of Communism, found 70 percent of millennial respondents said they are likely to vote socialist – and that one in three perceive communism as “favorable,” the Daily Caller reported.

The survey, a part of the Victims of Communism’s report “U.S. Attitudes Toward Socialism, Communism, and Collectivism,” polled 2,100 people in the United States who were 16 or older, the news outlet reported. The poll’s margin of error is +/- 2.4 percent.

“The historical amnesia about the dangers of communism and socialism is on full display in this year’s report,” said Marion Smith, executive director of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation.

The Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation is a Washington-based, non-profit educational and human rights organization.

The results are nothing less than shocking and an indictment of the American educational system. Our children apparently are not being taught that socialism and communism are anthema to freedom; that communist regimes have killed more than 100 million over the past century; that everybody but the elite few suffers under such systems.

One need only look to Venezuela to understand the dangers of socialism and the human toll it wreaks. The destitute country is the embodiment of Winston Churchill’s sage observation: “Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy.”

Our youth need to be better educated about the consequences and dangers of such systems. After all, as somebody once said, you can vote your way into socialism, but you will have to shoot your way out.

  1. I am afraid too often those of us who know history use the argument that it just doesn’t work. It’s pragmatic. It is apparent. Examples abound. But those bent on socialism don’t argue those facts beyond, “Well, they just didn’t do it right like I would” or some sort of blather that leads to the “immoral” present condition of income disparity.
Perhaps we need to approach these uneducated youth with a moral question right back at them: “When is it OK to take from someone and give it to another? That is called stealing. But if you vote to steal it, does it then make it morally OK?” Socialism indeed gains traction with its basis on envy. But it only “works” if the powerful steal (with guns, mind you!). If that is the goal, then, by all means, vote it in! But know you will never VOTE it out.

    • The plan is working. Dominant control of K-12, universities, media and entertainment by the Left over the last 2 generations is finally producing the desired result – Europication of the USA. Almost all business execs and politicians been taught by Leftists; few by conservatives. Now they are coming for the guns. This might not end well.

  2. Most kids in that age group don’t know our nation’s history or world history. Some are lazy and unmotivated to excel and care for themselves. That is why free stuff is appealing. What they don’t know if free isn’t cheap. To rely on a government for handouts, makes you a slave to the system. All it does in the long term is make us weaker. I think they could benefit by a trip to the Mideast and see what all this humbug is about. It might open their eyes. Our welfare system has made slaves of many Americans. Hopelessly stuck in a never ending cycle. And now, the next generation thinks that is the way to go. My son who is in that group is embarrassed of his peers.

  3. I recall the attractions of socialism or communism back in the early 70’s. Once you hear about it or somebody says hey, it’s the solution, it seems to be logical. But you must take the next step & read/research it yourself to realize it’s not the advertised equality utopia portrayed. A little is ok (like common essential public services) but the further you get into it the worse it gets until there is no turning back from its authoritarian form of government. Soon everything is an essential public service that you must support (and publicly embrace) or face the consequences. Ultimately it’s not compatible with freedom unless you define freedom as having no less or no more than anyone else by force of law. I wonder if people today take the time to read its history before embracing the concept?

  4. None of these people know history. They either weren’t taught or don’t care thinking it doesn’t apply to them. The danger of this is what we all were taught by our parents and teachers. If you do not learn history, you are doomed to repeat it. This is why I do not trust millennials. Even the ones here in Alaska. They are so out of touch with reality they don’t get what they are doing. If they are consciously voting socialist then they are a bunch of lost people who until they do begin learning real history, are unfortunately our enemies right now. That is sad. I agree with Dave. It tried to get a start in the 70’s but luckily was chopped down. I think what is worse is they refuse to acknowledge past history of this, yet embrace all this racial nonsense by removing statues and trying to erase what made this country what it is today. If it fits their agenda that’s all that matters.

    • It isn’t the highly educated who are advocating for it? It’s the Jay-walkers from the Tonight Show who can’t tell you the colors of a rainbow. It is the non-thinkers who just can’t comprehend how to earn a living or support one’s self. As a society, how did we go so wrong? Some teachers may be partially to blame. When Malcolm X becomes a good guy, something is wrong. When the domino theory against communism becomes a bad thing, again … wrong. When people throw trash on the ground when a trash can is a mere feet away. Add it all up and you have the next leaders of our country. No wonder Iran, N Korea, Russia, and China are licking their lips waiting for us to fall from within. They can’t beat us in war. Don’t have to.

  5. The infatuation with socialism and its uglier cousin, communism, reflects the extent to which we have become an unserious people living in an unserious land. Thank you popular culture; thank you media; thank you Kim Kardasian.

    • Sadly, for the most part, you are correct. Not all schools are teaching the left twist, but safe to say all colleges and universities are. Even law schools are a liberal bunch.

  6. Can you shoot your way out with a peashooter? The guns will be confiscated. It will take another millennial with good solid, conservative core values and proven work ethics to retrain the lazy, slothful millennials. Younger socialist and commies will not listen to their wiser elders. Retraining is the answer.

  7. Don’t just blame the kids. How about the largely Republican business leaders who plunder government for their gain? Look no further than our own Ohio Dan, Lisa and Don to see politicians bought and paid for who will work tirelessly to pad their donors pockets from government largess. I don’t worry too much about the proverbial welfare mothers but the Chamber Socialists are going to bankrupt us much faster. The kids might think socialism sounds good but the corrupt at the top are the experts at implementing it by redistributing wealth.

    • Well they’re too young to know that pappy Kennedy stole the election for Sonny boy, and that Johnson wanted the civil Rights act as a way of enslaving millions of people making them dependent on the government. They might even be too young to know about the clintons and all their theft and murderous ways. Had they known all about this stuff, they probably would have just melted away like the snowflakes that they are.
