Gov. Dunleavy endorses Nick Begich for Congress

Gov. Mike Dunleavy says Nick Begich is the best chance for Alaska to take back the congressional seat held now by Rep. Mary Peltola. He endorsed him in a statement on Monday.

“I encourage all Alaskans to get behind Republican Nick Begich in order to help Alaska turn our great country around,” he said. “We need change and we need it now.”

Begich has had endorsements rolling in. Before Nancy Dahlstrom dropped after the primary, he had already gained 40% of the organized Republican district committees’ in the state endorsing’ endorsements, along with six of the seven Republican women’s clubs and both Alaska Young Republican Clubs.

He also had Rep. Byron Donalds as an early endorser; Donalds is in President Donald Trump’s inner cycle of political advisers. Vivek Ramaswamy, the successful entrepreneur, came in early for Begich, and Sen. Mike Lee of Utah endorsed early.

Others came right over after the Dahlstrom drop. The National Republican Congressional Committee and Speaker Mike Johnson signed on immediately to help Nick Begich, as did Club for Growth.

Peltola was able to get just over 50% of the primary vote, but the turnout was under 18% in August, and political analysts believe turnout in November will be not only higher, but a more conservative voter base will show up. Kamala Harris is not going to excite many Alaska voters in the general election, nor will she secure much of the military vote, while Trump will have a big impact on voter turnout on the conservative side.

  1. how about an explanation of the highway monies fiasco. this is gonna be a decade long problem, unless he’s gonna stay in office after the election and fix it. what a shambles and lack of a spine,

  2. Don’t worry Dunleavy will give him a big “no bid” contract when Begich loses to study something of insignificance in the state.

  3. I’ll take “things that don’t matter” for $1000, Alex. I like Big Mike. Glad he did this. Don’t care that it took awhile to get there. But, this is a waste of oxygen. Not one single (D) is going to vote for Begich, either before or after the endorsement. Except maybe Lisa, who, like more than a few (R)s, will vote for Mary while complaining that Alaska is circling the toilet bowl of destiny.

  4. Dear Governor Dunleavy:

Thank you for supporting Nick Begich. Now, how about showing us some support for repealing ranked-choice voting. RCV is an abomination. 🇺🇸

  5. It somehow constantly amazes me that some people who consider themselves politically astute can’t grasp the fact that a sitting governor would support his Lieutenant Governor…it’s almost as if these politically astute observers are anything but.

When the selling point of a Begich running as a Republican is that he was the first to file for the office so should be granted it, it kinda raises a red flag (no pun intended), or should for any thinking person.

We no longer have a primary election process in this state, we have a who is going to be shamed to drop out first contest, and our elected representatives are poorer because of it. Rank voting is the beginning of Idiocracy, the sooner we rid ourselves the better off we will be. Hopefully we can survive until we get to actually choose our elected representatives again.

    • Your comment seems a bit overdramatic SteveO. Think, with traditional primaries, candidates with the most votes advance to the general election; those with lesser votes “drop out,” to use your term. The grassroots Republican voters are simply trying to mimic that traditional process in spite of Ranked Choice Voting (which you call “idiocy”). You are talking against yourself.

      • Wayne,

With traditional primaries candidates with fewer votes don’t “drop out”, they are voted out using this ancient and basic skill called counting. 2 is more than 1 and if the candidate with 1 vote is out voted by the candidate with 2 votes the candidate with more votes advances to the general election and the other loses and does not advance, it’s really not a hard concept to master. Is 2 more or less than 1? If you can’t answer that you shouldn’t vote.

  6. Dang, that was close. Was really worried the giant poster I put up in my living room with the list of who everyone thinks I should vote for wasn’t going to be finished by November.

Still need to check with my dentist before making my final decision. Oh, and the guy that puts the sprinkles on my ice cream at cold stone…got to get his opinion too.

  7. Your sarcasm actually fails in the context of your comment. When finding someone to remodel your kitchen or build a fence, do you just hire anyone off the street? Or do you ask people you trust for recommendations? When you need an attorney do you never ask others for recommendations?

  8. Our crappy Governor that keeps information about elections from the people that pay his salary , finally backing Nick , instead of his lt Gov . Nobody cares what this guy says. Hopefully his political career is over and he follows Steve Cowper out of the state.
