Footloose defiance: Group forms to have community line dance in Anchorage

Mayor Ethan Berkowitz has decreed no dancing and no live music in Anchorage due to the coronavirus. The decree began Sept. 3, and there’s no particular end dates in sight. Bar patrons also cannot stand at a bar; patrons must be seated — six feet apart. But some residents aren’t taking that to heart. In fact, they’re dong a dance rebellion.

The flash dance mob will gather at the Loussac Library, at 3600 Denali Street on Sept. 15 at 5:15 pm, and will do the Cha-Cha and the Boot Scootin’ Boogie. The Assembly’s regular meeting will start at 5:15 pm.

Berkowitz has set down various laws over the past six months, which some say have crushed the business sector, while he attempts to tamp down the spread of the highly contagious COVID-19 virus.

  1. Mayor’s gone full-fundamentalist, but without the good-Baptist character or consistency. No movies- now no dancing. Next targets, smoking, swearing, card-playing and swimming on Sundays. We’ve come a long way, baby.

    • What are we complaining about? We can still buy booze, weed, get abortions and not go to church. Life is good in Hiz Honer’s socialist utopia!

  2. I’ve been waiting for this! I was hoping Bernadette Wilson would broadcast some tunes atop her waste truck and we would have a community “dance off”.
    .
Hats off to whoever organized this.
    .
    Kevin Bacon for Mayor!

  3. You write that Berkowitz is trying “to tamp down the spread of the highly contagious COVID-19 virus.” From the conflicting, corrected, corrupt, compromised (please excuse the polyasyndeton) information from the feds et al., he has little basis for injecting himself into controlling the lives of the citizens of Anchorage. But he is doing a good job of helping those who contribute nothing to this community or quasi community.

  4. Awesome! Anchorites are finally fighting back! LOVE it! I really hope someone films it. I’ll be will you in spirit!

  5. I overheard some liberals discussing a plot to disrupt this event by having haters show up and dance in a way which will be gross and offensive, including grinding. If someone is wearing a mask while dancing, they are probably an agitator who wants anarchy. Beware, and remember your moves are being videotaped.
