Count goes on: Division of Elections says there are 35,000 ballots to go

The Division of Elections released information today that sheds light on the state of the Nov. 5 election’s ballot count.

“Unofficial estimate of ballots left to be counted/received is approximately 35,000. Our election officials are working around the clock. The deadline to receive absentee ballots postmarked on election day and mailed within the U.S. and its territories is Friday, Nov. 15,” the Division reported. Not all of the absentee ballots that were requested by voters will be returned; some people choose to vote in person, even if they have an absentee ballot, while others just never return.

The count includes about 48,000 absentee ballots, 69,000 early votes, and 3,800 questioned ballots, the division told AP.

They have received 73,148 early ballots. They’ve counted 69,000 early ballots. There are about 4,000 left to count.

There are 13,093 questioned ballots. They’ve counted 3,800 of them. There are about 9,300 left to count.

The division sent out 60,122 absentee-by-mail ballots and have received 44,936 ballots back from voters. There are 17,438 absentee-by-mail ballots left to count.

They have counted or will count 14,622 in-person absentee ballots.

They have processed 5,086 online absentee ballots, and 18 faxed absentee ballots.

They have processed 776 special-needs absentee ballots.

The absentee total is 66,341. They’ve counted about 48,000 of those. That leaves about 18,341 left to count.

In 2020 and 2022, roughly 20% of absentee ballots by mail that were sent out to voters were never returned to the Division of Elections.

In 2024, the division sent out 60,122 absentee-by-mail ballots, and has received 45,494 back. At most, based on historical results, we can expect around 3,000 absentee-by-mail ballots, at most, more to come in.

    • Despite all the hooting an hollering from the GOP they have yet to prove that the elections are full of fraud. Trump seems to have shut up about all the rigging that was going on after he was declared the winner. Show the evidence of fraud or close your mouth.

      • Trump got very close to the same number of votes he did in 2020. Harris got about 71 million. Biden supposedly got a virtually impossible 81 million in 2020. Harris at least campaigned, and was unquestionably a more viable candidate than Biden. She should have gotten AT LEAST as many votes as Biden. What happened to all those votes? NO we have not shut up! It’s more obvious now than ever!

      • Um – how about 81 million votes for Joe Biden in 2020? Where did those votes come from? Where did they go? Just take some time to look at the 2020 results vs 2024, state by state, and see where the discrepancy is…

      • Evidence? There’s plenty.
        .
Where is the investigating? No proof can be provided until the oddities are investigated.
        .
But, what do we get instead? Prosecution of anyone who asks questions.

      • Fraud? Like when judges change election laws on election day so that a write-in candidate manages to get elected? That kind of fraud? 2010, Alaska.

      • Do you realy think that 20 million voters just disappeared after 2020? Aren’t you in the least bit curious about the mathematical impossibility of these numbers? You sound like you’re easily duped and non compos mentis.

      • If you were so sure there was no fraud you would be demanding an audit (not a recount) of the complete election of 2020 but instead you are not even interested in where the 10,000,000 or so Biden votes that did not show up this time went.

      • Go watch 2000 Mules and then we can talk…until then OPEN your eyes and stop listening to biased news sources that keep repeating the same talking points. That is how critical thinking works, you look at BOTH sides and only after some serious pondering do you draw a conclusion. Don’t be a muppet that repeats the party lines….

    • Third world, banana Republic “stuff”.
      The Alaska bush strikes again.
      Truly embarrassing.
It’s been over a week and we still haven’t declared the race?
      Truly disgusting…

  1. Working around the clock. Really? We are the second to the smallest population in the nation and the entire nation has completed their elections except us? Is there another state also no finished? Add also we only had roughly 50% voter turnout statewide. Something is so wrong.

  2. I heard there was a small group of conservatives in Fairbanks, they are doing their best, considering they had been “over looked” by officials who were supposed to tell them when to enter the ballot rooms for watching. More people need to get involved, we should never get this far off in the ditch again!

  3. 8 days after the election and the citizens still do not have the results of the election. Get ready for another charley foxtrot recount! Why do things keep getting worse instead of better?

  4. I have a good friend who retired and moved too Texas 6 years ago. They sold there home in Anchorage and have no ties to Alaska. They has been a registered voters in Texas 5 years now. They all got Texas Drivers right away, got jobs and also bought a home.. Him and his wife to include his now adult sons have been receiving Alaskan ballets in the mail since they relocated. They have contacted Ak Dept of Elections when they 1st left and every year since they left. They have explained to the Department of Elections that they are have no connection to Alaska and dont intend on coming back.
This is just one family that I know of. It makes you wonder how many thousands of these ballets that are sent out of state get sent back and counted.
    Something to ponder.

    • My neighbor always boasts about the five extra ballots he gets in the mail for his children who have all moved out of state long ago.
Thats what happens when PFD applications result in automatic voter registration at the young age of 18.
No one tracks these mailed out ballots.
He didnt commit fraud to receive the ballots but he hasnt really said what he did with the ballots either….???
Automatic voter registration is just another useful tool.

  5. The bean counters are products of Alaska public schools. What do voters expect? Promptness?

And they are in charge of calculating 4 rounds of “voting” using vague and confusing guidance, to determine the election results. What could possibly go wrong?

    • What a strange comment given that everyone in charge of running the election and tabulating the results was appointed by Big Mike and/or retained by his appointees? Do ‘real’ Republicans just not want anything to do with elections? Is our Governor a RINO? Or… seems more likely, is everyone who fails to give you exactly what you want a Demonrat?

This sort of comment is no better than the lefties always going on about how Trump wants to be a dictator etc… give me a flipping break. Not everyone who disagrees with you, or fails to meet your expectations, is evil.

Alaska just has low standards for election speed (we have since before RCV) and Dahlstrom just failed to raise the bar any. She’ll be a perfectly useless – but also perfectly harmless – Governor if Mike gets that Interior job (pretty, pretty, please! We NEED a gas line, and I don’t think he can get us one from the Governor’s office). Plus with the State House very likely flipped back to the libs, the Gov’s best days in that office are already behind him, he’s not getting anything done at the State level in the next two years he failed to get in the first six.

Do wish we had a viable successor on hand, but Tuckerman’s too punchable, Chewy’s a nutter, and Dahlstrom is about as inspiring as a dirty dishrag. Maybe in another couple years Kaufman could do it?

  6. Isn’t Dahlstrom a Republican in a Republican Administration? The Governor and Sullivan haven’t said anything, everything must be just fine.

  7. DOE is following the law which is intended to respect the vote of our overseas military residents. I would like the law, or regulations changed to allow certification of , but not counting all ballots received by Election Day.

  8. We’ll have a batch of uncounted votes show up and guess what, they’ll all vote Democrat and No on Prop 2. Funny how that works.

    • Agree completely our state’s governance is third world and utterly corrupt.

It isn’t due to western Alaska’s dysfunction, the fish rots from the head down. AK Natives’ forms of governance were replaced with our “superior” modern form of top down governance.

The chaos and lack of accountability in western Alaska is a created environment for the purpose of manipulating elections and political power in Juneau, and Alaska’s representation in Washington.

In turn for this arrangement, rural Natives inherited poverty, zero economic opportunities or political power. A handful of “leaders” gain money, prestige and power.

      Classic third world model.

    • My wife said elders in the villages are “helped” cast their votes by the politically connected. Is anyone watching over this?

  10. Nearly every state has overseas military members. And many rural states have remote places and they don’t wait to count ballots until someone drives a minivan with them to the capital. Alaska has no good reason to take this long to count votes. Alaska needs election reform and I don’t know how we vote ourselves out of this problem.

  11. The current election process is specifically set up to enable cheating. Its a fact that if you find a mail-in ballot, by whatever means, you can simply fill it out, forge the signature, and mail it in. Its as easy as pie if you want to do so. No one can ever prove you committed fraud. The only check is if some clerk checks the signature…. which is by no means failsafe.

  12. By the way, let’s say officials check a forged signature and therefore reject it. In that case, there remains no way to tie the forgery to the person who committed it. It’s just plain stupid to try fixing an election system that was never broken to begin with. It should remain a 1-day event rather than a multi-week process with mailing and receiving deadlines and complications ad nauseum. There is only one rational explanation for such machinations: to enable cheating. Anyone arguing otherwise calls their own integrity into question.
