Mayor Dave Bronson named Kent Kohlhase as municipal manager. Kohlhase had served as acting municipal manager since December 2022, since former manager Amy Demboski and the mayor parted ways.

Kohlhase has worked for the Municipality since 2013, starting as the private development manager in Development Services. In 2015, he became the design section manager and municipal engineer in Project Management & Engineering. He was promoted to director of PM&E in September 2019. Mayor Bronson appointed him as Public Works director in November 2022.

“Kent’s dedication to public service, calm demeanor, and long tenure with the Municipality make him a natural choice for Municipal Manager,” said Bronson. “Over the last four months Kent has provided a steady and balanced approach to the role, and clearly has the experience to assume the permanent responsibilities. I am pleased to have him as my Municipal Manager and look forward to the progress we will accomplish together.”

Kohlhase graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1993 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He has been a registered Professional Engineer since 1998.

Kohlhase’s appointment is effective immediately, and his confirmation is subject to Assembly approval.

    • It’s only a career ender if you want to work for the communists one day; so long as you stay away from communists, you’re fine.

    • Some people aren’t working for Bronson merely as a career move. Some municipal employees actually care about following the rule of law and doing what’s best for the city. Can you imagine a world wherein some would seek to assist an upright man in his efforts to further the good of a community through public office?

      • I fear the foundation of your point, “good”, has crumbled away in our society. The big debate, shouting match now, is what is Good, where does the concept come from? It seems more and more “good” is strictly what one “wants” without consideration whatsoever of what is Good, Right, Truthful, or aesthetically pleasing to the heart of Man.

    • If you knew Kent, you would understand he is doing this job because he cares about the community

  1. Somebody’s got to do the job just like for AFD,APD, AWWU and all the other services we so easily take for granted!! Why not display a positive attitude regarding these vital positions and wish them every success!! Your mayor is serving you to the best of his ability in these selections ( and he has much demonstrated ability) despite an assembly sworn to defeat him!!

  2. Congratulations Mr. Kohlhase! My prayers and appreciation will continue to be with you. Excellent choice Mayor Bronson. Thank you. As I’ve attended Anchorage Assembly meetings and worksessions, I’ve had a front row seat to observe what Mayor Bronson so aptly describes as Mr. Kohlase’s dedication to public service, calm demeanor, steady and balanced approach. I’ve also appreciated seeing how he supports the MOA employees and other members of the administration. He obviously holds everyone accountable but also backs them up. That is tremendously valuable and uplifting. You don’t have to have worked long to also experience the opposite type of boss. Yuck.

Congratulations also to us, the residents of Anchorage, in having such a well-qualified, exemplary person in the position of City Manager. :)!!

      • The Assembly can’t have it both ways. They can’t keep complaining about vacant positions or persons working in an acting capacity while continuing to vote against confirmations.

They keep acting like little kids who continue to trip their friends while shouting at them, “Incompetence! Why do you keep falling down?!”
