ABC Cancels ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Over Charlie Kirk Comments

By BRENDA JOSEPHSON

ABC has abruptly pulled Jimmy Kimmel Live! from its schedule “indefinitely” following host Jimmy Kimmel’s controversial monologue about the assassination of Charlie Kirk. The decision, announced Wednesday evening, comes on the heels of sharp criticism from Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Brendan Carr and preemptive moves by major network affiliates.

Kimmel’s remarks aired during the September 15 episode, where he accused the “MAGA gang” of politicizing Kirk’s death by mischaracterizing the alleged shooter, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, as anything other than a conservative. “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them,” Kimmel said, drawing immediate ire from conservative commentators who pointed to reports of Robinson’s left-leaning views.

The backlash intensified when FCC Chair Brendan Carr, appearing on podcaster Benny Johnson’s show, labeled Kimmel’s comments “the sickest conduct possible” and warned of potential regulatory action against ABC and its affiliates. “They have a license granted by us at the FCC, and that comes with it an obligation to operate in the public interest,” Carr stated, hinting at news distortion complaints that could jeopardize broadcast licenses.

Hours later, Nexstar Media Group, which owns and operates ABC affiliates nationwide, announced it would preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live “for the foreseeable future” starting that night. In a statement, Nexstar’s president of broadcasting, Andrew Alford, cited Kimmel’s “offensive and insensitive” remarks as misaligned with community values: “Continuing to give Mr. Kimmel a broadcast platform… is simply not in the public interest at the current time.” ABC quickly followed suit, with a network spokesperson confirming, “‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ will be preempted indefinitely.”

On social media, President Donald Trump hailed the move as “Great News for America: The ratings challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED.”

      • That’s gonna come right back and bite the Republican side in the butt twice as bad when they inevitably destroy the economy once again. Enjoy your fleeting power, tick tock

        • Haha Rino,

You have built such a ridiculous straw man within your own mind, that your ignorance will not allow you to see just how united and powerful the conservative movement has become. Ignorance, at your own peril. But as they say, never interrupt and enemy when it is busy making a mistake.

You can either break free of the matrix of your own making, or you can free your mind and live a life of abundance with the rest of them.

    • Anchorage Voter, You need at ask the Woke Disney Corp that question, as y are the ones that fired Jimmy Kimmel. Its trueley a business decision, If Jimmy had high rating and made money for the company he uld sill be on the network.
Bet no one was watching him, and his show lost money for Disney

      • Not when the FCC Chairman warned of regulatory action.

If Disney had cancelled Kimmel for his comments, that would be one thing, but when a government official threatens action against a broadcaster for the actions/words of an employee, that is a whole other can of worms.

    • Freedom of speech allows him to say what he wants, but business are allowed to fire an employee who wrongly represents them or the companies ideals.

    • He has free speech he just doesn’t have a public airway to spew his hatred. He got cancelled because his show was losing money and this was a good excuse for Disney to cut their losses

      • It violates his first amendment rights when a government official threatens a broadcaster over an employee’s words.

If the FCC chairman had kept his mouth shut, this would look like a business decision.

        • Yep.
This FCC head (lawyer) should have kept quiet & let the market take care of these ‘not funny’ comedians.
I can’t believe he is a lawyer in the FCC system and then he did this.
Is Kimmel gonna make bank w/ a lawsuit now?

  1. I must admit that I was happy to hear of his firing and he wasn’t cancelled but held accountable for his slanderous comments. We still need to have free speech in America. Hopefully we can know the difference. God Bless America 🇺🇸

  2. I used to be a fan of Kimmel, until he got his own show, and turned it into an hour long diatribe against anything conservative. He was a very funny guy until be brought politics into it.
    .
I also think it is abhorrent the FCC commissioner and the President pushed for it. That is, in my opinion, a clear cut violation of the 1st Amendment.
    .
If I understand correctly, more than 30 ABC affiliate stations were going to preempt Kimmel’s show due to viewer pressure. That would represent a measurable market loss to ABC, and they might have cancelled it because of that alone.
    .
Then the Trump administration had to wade into the middle of it and exert pressure. So, Kimmel will be back on the air, probably with a LARGE settlement from the Federal Government.
    .
I have never disliked Trump more than I do right now.

    • Yea. Unfortunately DJT can not keep his mouth shut.
Oh well, that mouth got him to where he is, but the guy burns me out w/ his rhetoric.
And I went to his rally (great time) & voted for him 3 times.

      • You are correct.
However, the FCC commissioner did some pressure on ABC from what I am reading.
        .
And… my point still stands. Trump should have kept his mouth shut on this one. No good came of it, and he handed the left a hammer to hit him with.

        • They tried to hit him with a bullet twice after four years of 90+ criminal charges so now maybe they can “pin the tail on the donkey” with a hammer.
I am not always fond of Trump’s remarks either but also haven’t had to dodge any bullets myself so I dont judge his reactions too harshly.
Kimmel’s continuous and persistent personal remarks the past few years including the ones about his family and his wife have been more than any normal person would do so TDS has severely impaired his judgement.

  3. The left are freaking out about ABC’s move. But where were they when ABC canceled Rosanne Barr and Gina Carano? Crickets. They are free speech hypocrites.

  4. FINALLY! We American’s were waiting to see what the tipping point would be! Tragically it took a great American getting assassinated and then disgustingly snarky comments being made by the leftists about our loss of a great Patriot. Jimmy Kimmel is one of many, POS celebrities that are now being cancelled for making nasty inappropriate comments about the death of Charlie Kirk. May he rest in peace.

  5. I remember the old days when late night television was funny and worth staying up for. Carson, Leno, even Letterman before he changed. These guys are pure attack politics and very toxic. The viewing public awakened and stopped watching so the monetary losses became too great to bear. Glad he’s gone.

  6. So funny how the right can’t stand the first amendment when it’s something that they don’t like to hear. That means they don’t like the first amendment in the first place. The only reason ABC did this is because of an upcoming merger and the pressure from the Trump FCC. If Biden had done this, every one of you on here would be rending your garments.

    • No, the comment Kimmel made was not humor, it was not news, it didn’t engage meaningful conversation. It only spewed misinformation and hate. His ratings were in the toilet too so simple economics played a part as well.

      • That means it’s even more important to protect his speech. You must really hate the 1st amendment or just not understand it. The FCC pressuring private companies to do their bidding is shameful and unconstitutional.

        • You don’t get it. Kimmel’s last ratings showed an audience of 129,000, that’s terrible if not downright laughable (unless you’re a shareholder). The comment Kimmel made was an easy out for ABC and its affiliates. Give him the boot and stop bleeding money.

          • Then why was his show canceled now if his ratings have been bad for so long? The timing is questionable at best. And besides if his ratings are so poor then why would he have any people calling to complain about the content of the show. It doesn’t pass the smell test.

            • I bet ABC/Disney has been eying getting rid of Kimmel for some time, considering the poor ratings in key demographics and cost to produce his show. But the man has a contract and probably a hefty penalty fee, if they cancel him without cause before his contract is done. When the affiliate groups preempted the show, ABC took that as a reason to pull him off the air and I speculate avoid paying him extra.

            • As for the smell test, his segment was widely repeated on many other news shows, blogs and online publications. I am quiet certain many people called their station to complain about his vile and inappropriate message.

    • 1st Amendment does not apply between an employer and an employee. ABC as Kimmel’s employer has the right to cancel his show the moment it becomes damaging to the business. Which it did.
      .
However, Trump and the FCC commissioner should have stayed out of it. It turned it from a business decision to a politically motivated one, and that is a problem. As soon as anyone in the Federal Government put any pressure whatsoever on ABC to cancel Kimmel, it turned it into a 1st Amendment issue. And, Kimmel should sue, and walk away with a LARGE cash settlement.

      • cbmttek
        Im pro Trump .
        pro charlie .
        Even more pro first amendment.
Eventually the first amendment will be interpreted as it was written. Free speech trumps employers rights to regulate period. Its our government’s purpose to gaurantee free speech . No where in our constitution does it say employers have the right to regulate speech . When they try its a clear first amendment violation.
No where in our constitution , bill of rights or declaration of independence does it say all businesses rights trump citizen rights . So cb despite your general accuracy, its wise if you reread our sacred documents so as not to spread facist ideals ,( melding of state and buisness power to overcome sacred citizen right of speech – despite its occasional horrendous nature) Let abc fire kimmel for other reasons.

        • American, you are incorrect not only currently but also historically. I strongly suggest you read the Federalist Papers and maybe take a constitution course.

The 1st Amendment CLEARLY spells out that Congress shall make no law…..abridging the freedom of expression. This entire amendment is geared to curtail the power of government.
Our entire constitution is about the structure of government and their organizational relationship to each other and the people. There is nothing about private employers in this document, because it is not about them.
It is clear to me that you do not really have any grasp on the meaning of Bill of rights/constitution.

Mr. Kimmel retains his right to say what he wants. He is however not entitled to the platform at ABC/Disney. That belongs to those entities and they can decide whether or not to keep him on.

        • “Free speech trumps employers rights to regulate period.”
          No, it does not.
First of all, the 1st Amendment says “Congress shall make no law…” Not an employer has to let their employees say whatever they want whenever they want to.
Secondly, as a public facing employee, Kimmel represents the company. He is the face of the company. When he says or does something that damages the company’s reputation or profits, the company has a right to discipline him.
          .
          Here, let’s play make believe:
You own a company, and a public facing employee shows up wearing a T-shirt the average person would find offensive. Perhaps is has foul language on it, or maybe it advocates for a position your customers do not want. What do you do?
          Be honest.

        • Kimmel can say whatever he wants, he is a free man. However, he should not be getting paid to attack his audience with propaganda. When someone is paid to tell lies, that is not speech, that is psychological warfare.

    • cman you are projecting again!
Please tell me how many progressive speakers have been uninvited, canceled or shouted down at any educational campus…..Hmm I can’t think of one. However there are many conservative leaning speakers either uninvited (remember Mr. Ben Carson) or shouted down and unable to speak, or chased by a mob fearing for their life (Riley Gaines comes to mind).

You should also read the First Amendment and actually know what it says.

Interestingly you seemed to be okay with government censoring speech on the internet/social media with the help of Meta and Twitter (ironically the Feds have no jurisdiction over that realm of speech unlike the public airways) during the Covid days, when everything that did not conform to the Fauci narrative was labeled “misinformation”.

Jimmy Kimmel had the opportunity to say what he wants and still does. That does not mean he is entitled to this platform. It seems Sinclair, owner of ABC affiliate stations, was dissatisfied with his show and his commentary in their market and decided to pull it, probably following consumer complaints and poor ratings.

      • What makes you think I was ever in favor of shooting down speech on the Internet? On what basis do you claim I supported that? Please provide specific details.

To repeat my earlier comments, since clearly you didn’t seem to read it, Kimmel was pulled because the FCC pressured ABC to do so. That’s a blatant violation of the first amendment. Of course, a private company has the right to do anything they want, but the government does not get to decide what those private companies do or try to force them to do so.

        • cman you have my apology, after more perusal of old 2020 MRAK articles I discovered my memory to be faulty and I was thinking of frequent posts from one of your progressive cohorts.
Please accept my sincerest mea culpa. I was wrong!

On to your other point above:

It is my understanding that Nexstar and Sinclair group local affiliates pulled the show int their markets. ABC/Disney did not get any other non-affiliate takers and so pulled the plug nationwide.
You are making an ASSUMPTION that there was actual pressure from the FCC. What you ignore is that all broadcast station operate with a broadcast license as they use public airways (unlike the internet, no federal jurisdiction there) and are required to operate for the public interest among other things. If stations get a lot of complaints about their programming the FCC CAN pull their license or not renew it.
Furthermore the First Amendment protects your ability to criticize and say nasty things about THE GOVERNMENT or complain to your legislator about what he is doing. In other words if you say “Trump is Dumb and I hate the Department of War” They can’t come after you and throw you in jail like they do in North Korea.
Charlie Kirk is NOT the GOVERNMENT and while you can say what you want, you will reap what you sow and have to live with the consequences.

        • I notice you missed where over 30 ABC affiliates refused to carry Kimmel’s show after his comments, which represented a significant reduction in market share.
But…. it is all about violating Kimmel’s 1st amendment rights. Got it.

    • He violated FCC broadcasting regulations by speaking slander and knowingly false statements. You leftists are mind controlled morons that no nothing of the actual law. Good little parrots reciting whatever talking points your tyrannical masters tell you. Go get another booster shot already so that your precious Darwinism can eliminate you from the gene pool already. Bwhahahahaha

      • A nonsensical and junior high level reply. I also find it laughable that you claim I’m mind controlled when you clearly support anything your Dear Leader says or does.

      • “They”, really? It was one person that did the killing and he’s in custody. Is the right collectively responsible for the murder of Melissa Hortman? Of course not; and to claim so would be ludicrous, just like your claim of collective responsibility for Kirk’s murder.

        • “Is the right collectively responsible for the murder of Melissa Hortman?”
You are smarter than to use a “whataboutism” argument cman. But, since you did…
          .
          Two things.
          1. Who the hell is Melissa Hortman? (Yes, I know, but I bet less than 100,000 people knew who she was by name before she was killed.) Sorry, but I bet the average Alaskan could not name the current Speaker of the Alaska State House. Heck, most of them probably could not name their representative in the State House. But, millions of people worldwide know the name of Charlie Kirk.
          2. How many people on the right celebrated her death? In fact, did anyone on the right celebrate her death? If they did, I saw nothing.
          .
So… whataboutism fails here. If the left had not celebrated Charlie Kirk’s death, and called for more, “they” would not have been a word Dan Baldwin would have used. The left set the stage for the murder of Charlie Kirk, and they celebrated it afterward.

          • Again you use the term “the left” collectively. I know of no one, absolutely no one within my sphere that celebrated his death. To a person they all thought it was a horrible tragedy. You seem to want to paint a broad swath and that’s just completely untrue and unfair.

And to not put too fina a point on it, the vast majority of political violence in this country is committed by the right. You would be able to know that from the DOJ‘s website if they hadn’t taken down that study last week.

            • Go on line for more than three seconds.
Your anecdotal evidence is anecdotal, nothing more.
And, I thought you claimed that you were not a leftist. So, that makes your anecdotal evidence even more meaningless.
And… if you want to take that tact, never ever use MAGA on MRAK ever again.
              .
“And to not put too fina a point on it, the vast majority of political violence in this country is committed by the right.”
              OK prove it.
And, I know enough about the internet to know that study is available on dozens of archive websites. Go on over to one of them, and get the evidence. Prove it.
              .
Finally, my point. How many people celebrated Melissa Hortman’s death? Was there more than one? Was there even one? But, look at any number of leftists that have a public forum, up to and including the elected officials. Saying they are so sorry, and political violence has no place in the US, then immediately saying “but…” with some he brought it on himself style statement is not acknowledging a tragedy.

            • “You seem to want to paint a broad swath and that’s just completely untrue and unfair.”
And if that is the crux of your argument, you really have nothing. That is very weak, even for you.

            • Just saw this, 118 House Democrats voted against a resolution condemning Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
Weird. When well over 50% of the US House Representatives vote against condemning political violence, what, exactly do you want everyone to believe? That the left is universally opposed to political violence and it is just a few fringe weirdos?
How many of these Representative will get re-elected in 2026? All of them, I bet. Which means their constituents also think political assassinations are OK.
              .
Sorry, cman. The left owns this collectively.

    • I agree cman.
It’s OK if corporate cancels him, but the GOP/MAGA encouraging, insisting & implementing career cancellations is just nonsense (& a leftist move) imo.
I believe Charley Kirk would not want this liar cancelled, he insisted on “total” free speech as I remember.

  7. Private companies firing employees is their perrogative. I suspect the conservatives who are suspicious that this decision was made under duress from the federal government are so because any fuuture administration can apply similar pressure for any reason of their choosing. I’ve long said that a central tenet of Maga dorks like Elon and Brian Kilmeade is “making fun of me is illegal, and the law says you have to like me OR ELSE!”.

In the event there is a non-MAGA administration in 2029 and beyond, this precedent may very well come back to affect the same paragons of “free speech” and “small government” the current crowd who are currently cheering Kimmel’s firing. Can you imagine the reaction on the MAGA right if a future administration threatens a private business with FCC and legal action if say, Dave Portnoy is cut loose from the FOX college pregame?

    • Agree totally. Trump and the FCC commissioner should have remained silent. There was enough pressure from the public to pull Kimmel from the air, for a few days at least.

  8. What ABC decides to do or not is their business and there are consequences for that. However the FCC commissioner putting pressure on them over speech as a regulator is completely out of line. That is a power the government doesn’t have. Sad how conservatives lap up government overreach when they thing it will benefit them.

  9. He will survive, just like Tucker Carlson, Don Lemon, most likely he will come back even stronger, lmao, short term pain long term gain, can’t wait for his first Netflix special, he’s gonna be, let me get my words right so I don’t get turned into the Stazi, not nice to Donald.

    • Rino, you actually hit the proverbial nail on the head.
If Mr. Kimmel would have stuck to his regular drivel of bashing all things Trump, he probably would still be on the air and his minuscule audience could still partake of his “comedy”.
Politicians after all are fair game.
Instead he decided to crassly and ghoulishly lay the blame for the death of Charlie Kirk at the feet of the very people still reeling from his murder and grieving his loss. He knew it was a lie. It was intended to hurt and inflict pain.
What he did not calculate in was that many many Americans respected and cherished Charlie Kirk and treating them like that, is what, in my opinion, contributed to the decision by certain media groups to pull his show.

It is clear that you have no idea what the Stasi was, as you misspelled it.
The Staatsicherheitsdienst or the state security service was the East German equivalent of the KGB (but way more efficient)

Lucky you to live in these United States where you can post silly things and nobody cares.

  10. On a completely objective viewpoint, I never thought Kimmel was funny at all. Just a monotone, boring guy who thought he was a comic. He was the joke.

        • Yeah yeah….
VP Harris called on Twitter to suspend Donald Trump’s account and Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer demanded that they fire Tucker Carlson.
AOC:”‘We’re Going To Have To Figure Out How We Rein in Our Media Environment’ ‘… so that you just can’t spew misinformation”

        • And, ABC could have told them to go pound sand. And, would have won in any legal battle over it. And, ABC has lawyers who know this.
          .
So, ABC either sucks at defending their broadcast licensing, or they realized what a liability Kimmel had become. I am going with the latter.

  11. It’s truly sad how many people do not understand how constitutional rights work.

The 1st Amendment protects against government overeach, it does not protect against the consequences of saying whatever a person says. Those who claim this is a 1st Amendment violation clearly have no understanding of what has occurred and instead of defending the lies (since they are indefensible) that Kimmel spewed are using a strawman argument to try and score political points, just like Kimmel was doing. This is nothing more than gaslighting on the part of Kimmel, and further gaslighting from the left.

    • Exactly. The libs don’t understand that the first amendment applies to the government, Not private citizens and companies.

Having said that, what Kimmel said was a lie and grotesque.

    • Spot on. The network has every right to take a person off their airways who is not making a profit for them. Kimmel has had terrible rating for some time and the network is finally taking action. Actually, their affiliates were saying their viewers were not putting up with Kimmel’s unfunny and often vile content. Bad ratings are the kiss of death. Kimmel can’t handle that truth.

      • You should read what FCC Chair Brendan Carr said, where he said it, and the context behind what was said instead or simply parroting the talking points provided to you that you continue to repeat here with no understanding of what you are talking about.

It’s clear that you don’t understand that public officials, the President and the FCC Chair also have the ability to speak freely, and that if you want government to restrict their right to speech that would be an actual violation of their 1st Amendment rights.

Do you have any actual proof that the FCC pressured ABC to pull Kimmel, or are you going to continue repeating the same line regardless of any supporting evidence?

          • Is that what he told ABC or is that selective quote you provided something that was told to someone not associated with ABC?

Once again, you should really try and read what FCC Chair Brendan Carr said, where he said it, and the context behind what was said instead or simply parroting the talking points provided to you that you continue to repeat here with no understanding of what you are talking about.

It’s apparent that you’d prefer to continue repeating the same line regardless of any supporting evidence.

I remember the times when you went to bat for Alex Jones when his 1st Amendment rights were violated and when you did the same for Tucker Carlson, oh wait…you didn’t do that either did you?

          • And, ABC could have told Carr to get lost. They likely have a suite of lawyers on payroll to protect themselves from exactly this kind of pressure.
            .
            But, they pulled Kimmel instead.
            .
Gee… wonder why? Their legal team would have won any case the FCC tried, but they pulled Kimmel. Either they have the worst lawyers on the planet, or they wanted to pull Kimmel anyway. Since a host of their affiliate stations had already said they were preempting Kimmel, I am guessing they chose door #2.

  12. For all the lefties yelling “cancel culture” this is simply what consequences look like when you behave unprofessionally on a professional, very public platform. Consequences.
    Consequences.
    Say it liberals: Consequences.
    Don’t confuse the two.
Conservatives don’t need to cancel Jimmy because he did it himself with his own words and actions.

  13. He was cancelled due to massive communications companies saw his dreadful speech as a commercial detriment. Sinclair, owns hundreds of ABC affiliates told ABC corporate to take out the trash, and they did.

  14. No one violated Mr. Kimmels right to free speech. Only the Congress can do that, and it requires the passage of a law. Kimmel still has his speech rights, he just doesn’t have his old job. Which he has no right to. “ The Congress Shall Make No Law….”. And they didn’t. So no 1st Amendment violation. The 1st only applies to the Congress. Read it and weep cman.

    • So the cops can arrest people for public speaking & causing a ruckus, but since the Police Dept decided to clear out the ruckus on it’s own it would be legal, because Congress did not pass a law telling the cops to arrest protesters?

This FCC head (Mr Cox) is talking about closing down “The View” now for things they say over the airways.

What happens when libs get the WH again & their lefty FCC head starts closing down AM Talk Radio (created by Rush & Reagan) ?
I am a conservative mostly because of Talk Radio and the Left is foaming at the mouth to get rid of it.

      • George your example is nonsensical.

Our nations organizational structure does not require Congress to make every law on the books for every state. The overarching principle of the US constitution guides laws passed at every level of government.

You have a jurisdictional issue, as most police departments are either state or city and the rules/laws passed by these entities govern police officers.

Causing a public disturbance and riots is a chargeable offense and can be prosecuted at any level of government.

No police officer I know will arrest you for simply speaking your mind, as it is against the law of the land.
However public opinion may make you loose that soapbox you are on.

  15. That moron never lost his free speech rights, only the national platform to spew his hate. “Free speech” does not mean that ABC is required to broadcast his BS.

  16. The comments from Kimmel were pretty mild, and more accurate than the constant lying drivel we hear from Trump every single day. And yet, where are the cries to fire Trump?

    • Excuse me? Mild? Accurate?

Only in the Jemele Hill/Joy Reid universe where EVERY white male with a gun is automatically declared a right wing whatever. That is the most moronic, intellectually corrupt way to avoid any kind of responsibility and the most despicable use of identity politics.

I suggest you go look under your bed and see if you can locate your humanity and seek help for your TDS. Maybe Dr. Dan has an opening!

    • Cries to fire Trump?
They are constant from the left side of the political aisle. Impeach, impeach, IMPEACH!!!! If you are not hearing it, you are deliberately ignoring it.

  17. Okay, so here is an interesting question for all you screaming First Amendment violation:
    What about Matthew Dowd?
He got actually fired not just taken off the air for pretty much saying the same thing as Jimmy Kimmel.
Why are you all not up in arms about him?
Not a single person has even mentioned him. Didn’t he have the same rights as Jimmy Kimmel?

  18. The crux of the whole issue here is this:
Progressives like Jimmy Kimmel, Matthew Dowd, Ilhan Omar and all those internet revelers, have become so comfortable. They are thinking that only conservatives can get in trouble for saying or posting things. Only conservatives can get fired or de-platformed.
All of a sudden there is a realization that you make a vile comment and your employer see your depravity, it can open you up to the same fate you wished and maybe even facilitated for others you disagreed with.

  19. And… Kimmel will be back on air tomorrow, Tuesday Sept 23.
    .
So, either Trump and the FCC commissioner absolutely stink at suppressing free speech, or ABC did not pull Kimmel because of Government pressure.

    • Lmao these are not mutually exclusive. FCC commissioner makes a threat and hours later they pull a show. Pretty clear cause and effect (don’t forget already happened earlier this year)

But again just like maga news keep telling urself a lie enough it must be the truth
