Rep. Mike Prax of North Pole made a motion on the House floor on Monday to table Sen. Bill Wielechowski’s SB 113, which levies corporate income taxes on businesses based outside the state but doing mail-order business or services in the state. His motion failed.
The controversial tax legislation has many confused because while it is not a sales tax, it will likely raise the cost of doing business in a highly digital age of Amazon, Etsy, eBay, and even online services such as LegalZoom. Taxes absorbed by companies will be passed along to customers.
Those voting to table the bill were: Jamie Allard, Bill Elam, DeLena Johnson, Kevin McCabe, Mike Prax, George Rauscher, Dan Saddler, Rebecca Schwanke, Cathy Tilton, Frank Tomaszewski, and Sarah Vance.
Those voting against tabling the bill were: Robyn Burke, Jeremy Bynum, Ashley Carrick, Mia Costello, Julie Coulombe, Maxine Dibert, Bryce Edgmon, Ted Eischeid, Zack Fields, Neal Foster, Alyse Galvin, Andrew Gray, Carolyn Hall, Sara Hannan, Rebecca Himschoot, Ky Holland, Nellie Jimmie, Andy Josephson, Chuck Kopp, Donna Mears, Genevieve Mina, Elexie Moore, David Nelson, Justin Ruffridge, Cal Schrage, Will Stapp, Andi Story, Louise Stutes, and Jubilee Underwood.
The vote total may be a good predictor of how the final vote will go on Wednesday when the bill is taken up for passage. The measure already passed the Senate and may end up on the governor’s desk, where he’ll have to decide whether to veto it.
Why are we always outnumbered?
Hi Manda,
Because most of our representatives were educated in government schools.

Just what Alaskans are asking for—a higher PFD….oh wait, I mean more taxes. When I’m out and about in Wasilla, that’s all anyone ever asks for—more taxes [said no Alaskan ever].
David I’d would rather do a 1 time pay out on the dividend or scrap the GD thing. It’s nothing but a divisive tool used to upset Alaskan residents. It’s amazing how wrapped around the axle people get over $1200. I say pay out $40 billion in one time pay out and use the other $40 billion to build infrastructure. Of course whidbey the dog would rather it go to the trans academy.
This is a tax to pay for increased spending, not lower the deficit…. Which is a$$ backwards as you can get..
I can vaguely understand urban legislators voting for this bill. Why would they care if this diminishes the number of outside sellers willing to ship to Alaska? If you live in the urban area, you have a world full of box store retailers to select and find anything your little heart desires.
The real question is is why would any idiot from rural Alaska cut the throats of the very people that elected them and are dependent on internet sales?
Governor Dunleavy, veto this pile of crap. It doesn’t do diddle squat for the children that it’s supposed to help with a increase to the Education funding bill.
So not true. I’m speaking about buying local. I live in Anchorage and although I buy local whenever I can, even if it a bit more expensive, I still depend on Amazon for a lot of items. I can’t get much of it here. This tax is plain stupid. Why are we always cutting off our nose to spite our face? Cut the budget like real people do.
Typical, politicians finding more ways to extort money so they can redistribute wealth. There’s a name for that…
who are they kidding? The businesses based outside the state won’t pay the taxes; the Alaskan public will.
You are correct Randy.
Because we don’t go out and vote like the Ds.
This tax will cost the state of Alaska more money to collect than it will generate.
The only easy and fair tax to collect is a sales tax.
Remember who these politicians are and send them packing during election season.
Okay, first steal our PFD income, then tax stuff to make it cost more. This will seriously ding the Alaska economy. The only ones who will benefit are the pot shops and the liquor stores, and maybe the labor union bosses – mustn’t forget the traitor rinos…
Wha-hey, is that Jubilee Underwood crossing over to vote with Democrats for more taxes? Where are the dozens of fake conservative MRAK shills telling us how a patriot like Rep. Eastman was the ‘real problem’ and needed to be replaced with a team player like Underwood?
Guess Alaska Republican voters earned another ‘Fell For It Again’ award, but don’t pretend the right didn’t warn you. Enjoy your continued Uniparty government – featuring even more establishment pigs at the Juneau trough.
Why did Mia vote against tabling it? Perhaps the thought is that taxing mail order will improve opportunities for local businesses to compete? Local shops can’t afford to maintain the inventory needed to truly compete. And this will simply make living in Alaska more expensive than it already is.
Its because Costello was a teacher. ( she also worked for Murkowski, Sr. ) that supersedes anything she may have pretended to be in order to get elected.yet another phony!!!
First reduce state spending. THEN you can talk about new taxes. Why is there never discussion about reducing state spending?
Because that would be too mean to have a “Elon Musk” pointing out the waste fraud and abuse of our budget that has bloated ever since oil started flowing.
Have you ever tried taking candy away from toddlers
Rollo,
As you no doubt understand, the ‘genuine’ needs and the expectations of the public are infinite, whereas the public’s expectations and requirements for personal responsibility and good behavior are diminishing to near zero. In our present-day culture, governments must always do ‘more’ to support the down-and-out people, while expecting little or nothing in return.
A good example of this point is the burgeoning homeless population in our city, many of whom leave mounds of trash behind wherever they roam, and who are exhausting the responders of the police and fire departments. Meanwhile the municipal government requires nothing in return, not even issuing a citation for littering or a bill for emergency services.
‘We the people’ are expected to do our duty, which is to shut up and pay more taxes. Where’s your pity! Plus, the NGOs need more money!
Alternatively, one may take up drugs and drinking, live in a tent encampment on public and private property, set fires, tear up the Sullivan Arena, and get on the NGO lists for free housing and food handouts. Oh, and feel free to take a squat in the town square, or wherever. It’s okay, the good mayor is anxious to help.
Wake up folks! This means that when you sell a few items on Facebook marketplace you’ll have to pay sales tax to the state!
Why spread lies? Nothing at all about person to person private sales, don’t be stupid.
Mia Costello?
What’s up with that?
She’s definitely gone RINO on us
