SHE VOTED AGAINST DECISION IN ‘BONG HITS FOR JESUS’

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader-Ginsburg has died. She was 87.

Ginsburg was a member of the liberal minority on the Supreme Court and had been ill for many years.

On Alaska cases, she was a dissenting vote on the famous “Bong Hits for Jesus” case, in which a student in Juneau was suspended from high school for promoting drug use with a “Bong Hits for Jesus” banner during a school off-campus assembly that took place during the lead up to the Summer Olympics.

She also was a dissenting vote on the case involving the permitting for the Kensington Mine, (Couer Alaska) which now provides hundreds of mining jobs to Southeast Alaska.

On a more recent case involving hunter John Sturgeon and river access in Alaska, she voted with the majority.

President Trump, possibly with knowledge of her grave condition, had already released his list of potential replacements. He has challenged Joe Biden to release his list. Biden has not responded.

Ginsburg died of pancreatic cancer, her family said. It’s the same disease that quickly took the life of Alaskan Scott Hawkins, a gubernatorial candidate in 2018 and foundational supporter of Must Read Alaska during its inception.

Appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1993, Ginsburg had spent much of her legal career advocating for women’s rights. She had won multiple arguments before the Supreme Court. She had served as a volunteer attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union and was a member of its board of directors; she was also general counsel to the ACLU.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski is on the record saying she opposes confirmation of any Trump nominee before the General Election.

If Trump nominates a replacement before the General Election, it will likely become the singular issue between now and Nov. 3. For many Trump voters, the Supreme Court seats were one of the most important reasons they voted for Trump in the first place. They consider those seats to be more important than those Republican seats in the House and Senate.

The Republicans in Congress are said to be pushing for Trump to go ahead and advance his nomination, an action that could prompt a new round of rioting across America.

According to NPR, Ginsburg said days before her death that her “most fervent wish” was that she not be replaced on the high court until a new president is sworn into the White House. 

“My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed,” Ginsburg dictated in a statement to her granddaughter that was obtained by NPR.

    • Lisa has demonstrated that she can be rolled by the left, particularly on SCOTUS confirmations. As such, they will never, ever leave her alone. She screwed up with Kavanaugh. She will again with this nominee. Doing so, she is choosing not to run for reelection in 2022. Cheers –

    • For most Americans, an immediate appointment IS giving them a voice. Similarly, a post-election appointment could deny them a voice. The concept of an impartial judiciary is the biggest fallacy in politics today. Judges have evolved into nothing more than unelected politicians. As such, with executive and senate of the same party, they will move for appointment. Pence will need to break the tie caused by leftists Romney, Collins and Murkowski.

    • Since when do any politician follow what they said in the past? Schumer was against gay marriage for years but now he isn’t. He was all onboard with Southern borders restrictions and even a wall until he isn’t. If you’re waiting for a politician to actually do what they say, you’ll be waiting a long time.

  3. Of course McConnell will go back on his previously espoused prohibition of voting on a nominee before an upcoming election. Could there be any doubt? What else could be expected from a person of his character… The GOP, in their craven desire for power, will ethically contort themselves ever further in order to justify a vote.

    • Ginsberg timed her death perfectly. She wanted a civil war in this country, but typical of a liberal Democrat, too cowardly to stick around for the fight. Trump will nominate a highly
      qualified conservative woman and McConnell will commence Senate hearings immediately……..thereby setting the stage for a showdown. Again, thanks RBG. You kept Trump in the game.

    I’m not a big fan of GOPers as a whole (or Dems), but Murkowski has been just as bad, maybe more so, than ex-Senator Mark Begich for Alaska in many ways. We need to replace her with someone more like Rand Paul or even Mike Lee. I didn’t like Murkowski when she was first elected, but her not supporting to end federal dollars for Planned Parenthood and then her whole Justice Kavanaugh nonsense was the nail in the coffin for me. (I’m actually pro-choice, I just don’t think government should be subsidizing abortion). Does the GOP have someone yet who will run against her, someone more libertarian/conservative leaning, not pseudo “moderate” Murkowski claims to be?

    • I recall when Lisa Murkowski put the nail in the coffin and voted to uphold Obamacare. She then said she would not be running for reelection when her term expired… Of course she lied saying for years she was against Obamacare until she was forced to show her true colors. I’m sure she is hoping people will forget her promise not to run when her term is up… She’s a liar and a fake… But whether she changes her mind and runs again or not, Alaskans will not reelect her… Nuff said…

        Alaskans should send *all* Republican senators a signal by stoking the recall fires. They don’t need to succeed, just get press in the next few weeks.

  5. I thank RBG for her service, I didn’t agree with most of her decisions. I do not believe there is even enough time from now until November 3rd to select a nominee and have a confirmation hearing. Doing so before the election with this short timeframe wouldn’t be a very shrewd political move either. This is a transformational pick and one that shouldn’t be chosen lightly. Biden will likely come out in the next few days giving his criteria, probably based upon whatever minority population his handlers decide will give him the most votes. Meanwhile what we need is a justice who will do their job, which is to judge the law based upon the Constitution by following Article III of the Constitution, something that seems to be lost by a few members of SCOTUS.

    • Biden, in his speech 6/19/1992, basically said that in an election year, the president should choose a moderate nominee that both parties could find common ground on.
      I don’t understand why Murkowski (or McConnell or even Schumer) doesn’t try to ask Trump to contact Biden for a list of the Biden/Harris SCOTUS list and ask Biden if they’d like to jointly nominate a moderate SCOTUS, per the Biden Rule that Biden made in 1992. Then, hopefully, both parties would quit calling for a civil war or burning down everything.

      • What is a ‘moderate’ justice? Will they follow the constitution in moderation? Will they moderately choose to legislate from the bench? In reality, we’ve come to a point where there is very little middle ground on hot button issues. A so-called moderate justice will typically vote with the leftist bloc.

        • Barry Goldwater told us the answer to that question back in 1964: “…Moderation in pursuit of justice is no virtue!”

          Somebody remind Murkowski — perhaps within the preamble to a recall petition.

  6. Excellent article over at National Review from August 2020 about why Republicans should fill RBG’s seat and how it’s precedent to fill it. Further, it’s precedent to have the controlling party in the Senate not hold hearing for the opposition party. What McConnell did may have seemed distasteful, but it is the norm. Conversely, when the Senate and President are of the same party, it’s normal to fill the seat, even up to election day.

    Murkowski was a weak and often confused state legislator – her daddy gave her the Senate seat.

  9. Biden has said he will appoint a black woman to the Supreme Court. Nothing like limiting your qualifications based upon race and sex, it used to be that we would call that racism and sexism, now it’s called wokeness…or in old school terms, pandering.

    • We’ve been divisive my whole life. I think things got worse when social media took off, and now we have corporate media that don’t even try to hide their political leanings. It doesn’t help when our politicians of all parties at every level are too busy name calling of their opponents than trying to work together to solve problems. I’ve acknowledged to be an an-cap libertarian, but I at least try to be respectful of other people’s perspectives, so I apologize if some of my comments are part of that “99% of comments”. I’m more interested in trying to find common ground with people, but it is difficult.

After the dirty antics of the Democratic Party these last 4 years & the downright treasonous acts of the criminal Deep State, Trump would be completely justified in sticking his finger in the eye of the Left and pushing through a new Supreme Court Justice immediately. Or, he could wait until after he is re-elected. Either way he will come out the winner. The Red Wave is coming & it will be a tsunami!

  14. The next Supreme Court Justice should be Ivanka. Although she’s totally unqualified, her appointment would achieve the two main goals of conservative America: make Donald happy and infuriate the Democrats. And Ivanka looks so good in black.

  16. Latest information suggests that the GOP in the Senate may have the votes to move forward on a vote to confirm a nominee WITHOUT the votes of Murkowski and Collins. Which means that Lisa has accomplished absolutely nothing from her posturing. If the Left is going to pack the Court, they will pack the Court. Might as well confirm the new nominee and force the Left’s excrement-coated hands. Let’s get the party started!
