‘Pirate’ now in custody in Bannock, Idaho after assault

A man who was known to Fairbanks as a dangerous sex offender has been arrested in Bannock County, Idaho.

Pirate, who years ago changed his name from Daniel Selovich, has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman, burning her with a cigarette, and gagging her with his foot.

The incident unfolded on Nov. 9, when Bannock County Sheriff’s Office checked on a woman in Downey, Idaho, who had been allegedly assaulted.

According to Idaho reports, officers say the victim met Pirate on a dating app, and agreed to let him spend the night with her. During the night, the heavily tattooed man allegedly burned her with a cigarette and left large scratches on her back. He is now charged with felony aggravated battery.

At first the woman didn’t want to press charges, but later she changed her mind. During her account with investigators she said Pirate had come to her home on Nov. 7, and when they went to her bedroom he bit her on the lip and neck so hard that she cried.

“Pirate held her (mouth open) so that he could ash his cigarette into her mouth,” according to the probable cause. “(The victim) said that he took pictures as she held the ash in her mouth,” the report said.

Pirate showed up in Fairbanks in December of 2019, causing alarm, as he had once been accused of the kidnapping and savage sexual assault of a woman he took to his cabin in Manley Hot Springs in 2015. That woman later died of unrelated causes and so the State dropped the charges, since there was no victim.

But meanwhile, Pirate had been extradited to Nevada in 2016 after the Alaska case against him was dropped.

At the time, Nevada authorities had connected Pirate via DNA to a Las Vegas rape some 12 years earlier. Selovich had also been convicted of rape in California in 2004.

After leaving Fairbanks, Pirate was spotted in Redding, California, one of his haunts, where the community became up in arms, and where police warned people to leave him alone and not harass him.

  3. So sad! Alaska is a Criminal Sanctuary, Alaska Liberal courts should had thrown him into jail and misplaced the key. He should been left inside a jail.

  4. Excluding a King’s Ransom, how can any woman in her right mind possibly be induced to spend the night with this person?

    I believe some people can be rehabilitated, and we should try.

    But others cannot, after a fair and Constitutional trial. If convicted the court should consider, the victim, the crime, and chances of rehab of the defendant.

    So, max out his (Pirate) sentence, and really consider ever letting him out again.

  8. When looking at cases like this I am reminded of how many Judges were up for retention votes.
    Then it becomes obvious of why these types of dangerous individuals get to terrorize our communities.

    While no one I know voted for retention of most every Judge, the overwhelming majority of Alaskans did vote to retain every single Judge. Elections have consequences, and those who voted for this own it. Regardless of the State.

      • I’ve lived in Alaska 45+ years and the only judge I remember being voted-out was Superior Court Judge Michael Corey, which took place a few years ago.
        The Alaska Division of Elections “Official Election Pamphlet” lists all the judges up for retention and makes available one and a half pages of non-partisan info for each judge. I agree, its a boring read but very few of the judges get a “YES” from me by the time I cast my ballot.

The public is only allowed to provide an advisory vote and no judge has ever been removed unless they are found with a live boy or dead girl in the trunk of their car…as the saying goes. They can do anything they want. Corrupt as hell. They are the Elite and they know better than you. Leftist lawyers and their ilk control who who becomes a judge in this state, 99 percent.

    • What have Alaskan judges up for retention have anything to do with this miscreant? The Alaskan victim was the only witness. She died prior to the trial. The prosecutor dropped the case, because the only evidence against this abhorrent human being died with the only witness’s death. Judges had nothing to do with this. Also, the prosecutor was not to blame. If you want to point the finger at something, blame the U.S. Constitution’s Amendments 5, 6, and 14. I read so many comments on this blog about rights, such as the right to not wear a mask. The U.S. Constitution grants rights to every citizen, even the most despicable ones. One of the rights is due process. If you feel these rights are too liberal, then change the Constitution.

  11. Last I checked Louisiana still uses chain gangs on the road system for brush removal.
    Years ago “college days” we would never travel in that direction because they did not mess around there. We need to bring back “The Farm” for violent offenders. The early release program would be selling Farm products in designated Farm Stands. Sending our criminals out of state to do time is not the answer.
