New budget director at State: Juneauite Neil Steininger

Gov. Mike Dunleavy today named Neil Steininger as Director of the Office of Management and Budget. Steininger’s appointment is effective Tuesday, Jan. 21.

A lifelong Alaskan, the 35-year-old Steininger earned a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration and Economics from the University of Nevada, Reno. Steininger has held various roles at OMB through the past 5 years, serving as Budget Analyst, Chief Budget Analyst, and most recently as the Administrative Services Director for the Department of Education and Early Development.

His state experience includes the Department of Transportation & Public Facilities and the Permanent Fund Dividend Division, he previously worked in the private sector as an analyst.  

Acting Director Amanda Holland will continue with OMB to ensure a smooth transition.

  1. It really doesn’t matter who is OMB Director. Most likely these people are sane financial administrators.
    They know by simple accounting ethics that Alaska is an out of control disaster. We ignore simple facts of reality that we are spending from savings to sustain a false idol: The Dividend. There will be a reckoning, and it starts right now. Please believe me when I tell you: We must end the Dividend until we get our financial house in order. The Final Dividend should be a “full” Dividend ($3000) and then it ends before a small income tax takes effect a year later. So fight on recall and oil taxes people, the reality will kick in soon.

  2. This is good news for effective government. I may not like Dunleavy, but I respect the executive and the notion that the entire executive branch should follow the governor. From what I know of the current OMB leadership, they’ll work for the governor (whomever holds the office) and give the best advice they can along the way.
