The primary crisis hotline for veterans experienced a 98 percent increase in the number of texts that it received during the last two weeks of August compared to the same two weeks last year, according to Stars and Stripes.

Calls to the Veterans Crisis Line increased 7 percent and online chats increased by nearly 40% during the same time period, from Aug. 13 to 29. Department of Veterans Affairs officials attribute the increase to multiple factors, including the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan and the upcoming 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The Veterans Administration said there’s an increased awareness of the hotline since last year and there’s not as much stigma about utilizing the resource. Read more at Stars and Stripes.

  1. Since 2001 more than 2,700 vets have taken their own lives…more than all the soldiers who died in Afghanistan.

    • That’s less than the casualties that occurred 9/11/2001; almost 3000. But that number is probably insignificant to you since it was on American soil.

    • Steve,
It’s actually much worse than 2,700. The VA reports that around 20 veterans commit suicide everyday, that’s 7,300 per year or around 146,000 since 2001.

  2. When you have a Crisis the most appropriate place to run is on your knees for prayer before opening up the Word of God set in the bible.
I mean all seriously how much can some hotline volunteer you don’t know can do to comfort you?
We tend to run to everything and everyone around exhausting the things and people around us before realizing they are not sufficient for giving us rest.

    • I don’t believe in hotlines. I admit I used Awaic hotline a couple times. I seen it was all a weak attempt to bring myself my own glory and get a little attention. Hahaha. The volunteer had a time limit and sounded bored. Hahahaha. I don’t blame her. Hahahaha.

Crisis hotlines are a sorry attempt replacing God’s prayerline and reading his Word found in the bible.
