Interview with a Candidate

MEET AARON LOJEWSKI: When Fairbanks, you’ll have a chance to meet this rising political leader first hand. If you don’t get up to Fairbanks much, here’s the scoop:

Aaron Lojewski is a 10-year resident of Fairbanks and an outstanding Republican candidate for House District 5 — West and south west Fairbanks. He is challenging Adam Wool, who is part of the ineffectual Independent-Democrat House minority.

Aaron first ran for office in 2012, for the same house seat he seeks now, in a contested primary.

Although he was outspent by roughly 3 to 1 by a far better known candidate, he came about 100 votes shy of winning the primary.

The Republican went on to win the House seat in 2012, but it was taken over by Wool in 2014.

In 2014 Aaron ran in the first-ever borough wide election for the Interior Gas Utility Board of Directors and won, the term expires at the end of 2017.

Aaron helped run the PPP in 2008 and 2016 and has been involved in his district party operations since 2008 as a precinct captain.

In 2008 he served as a delegate to the state convention and will be a delegate this year.

In his 2012 race, the Fairbanks Newsminer has him on record as saying that: “ I favor deep spending cuts across the board….If we don’t work to increase oil production and reduce spending now, we will face a fiscal crisis and my fear is that the Permanent Fund and other reserves will be targeted and quickly consumed.”

The Newsminer also has him on record in 2012: “The next session will be financially critical…. If we do not balance the budget, we risk our government eating its way into the Constitutional Budget Reserve and Permanent Fund. They won’t last long.”

It’s not entirely surprising that he was thinking about a fiscal crisis back in 2012, seeing as he has earned a masters degree in Economics from UAF and has a degree in Finance. He has publicly discussed his thoughts in the ADN, Newsminer, and Juneau Empire editorials over the past several months.
